[Haskell] ANN: JMacro 0.3.2, A library/dsl for generating Javascript
by Gershom B 25 Sep '10

25 Sep '10

JMacro on hackage: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/jmacro This is the first official release announcement for JMacro, which has been on hackage in some form for over a year, and in the current version since July. JMacro is a library for the programmatic generation of Javascript code. It is designed to be multipurpose -- it is useful whether you are writing nearly vanilla Javascript or you are programmatically generating Javascript either in an ad-hoc fashion or as the backend to a compiler or EDSL. It provides support for hygienic names, as well as sharing of names between the generated Javascript and embedded Haskell antiquotation. In this release it also includes a module which allows the generation of RPC request/response pairs, allowing a lightweight implementation of AJAX-heavy applications. JMacro provides a simple, lightweight quasiquoted syntax that is mainly compatible with standard Javascript. Most Javascript code in the wild can be used as JMacro code with no or minimal modification. However, JMacro extends Javascript syntax in a number of Haskell-friendly ways, including whitespace function application and single character lambdas. Syntax is statically checked at compile time. JMacro expressions may contain antiquoted Haskell code. This code may generate further JMacro code, or it may generate any of a range of standard Haskell types, which are able to be marshalled into JMacro through typeclass methods. JMacro also provides an executable, which allows the standalone processing of JMacro code into Javascript. For more information, see both Hackage and the JMacro documentation on the HaskellWiki: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Jmacro Some examples or idiomatic JMacro code are available in the source of its provided Javascript Prelude: http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/jmacro/0.3.2/doc/html/src/Langu… Future work on JMacro, when time is available, is geared towards providing an optional layer of static typing with type inference. Patches, bug reports, and feature requests are all very welcome.

ANN: hoauth v0.3.1
by Diego Souza 22 Sep '10

22 Sep '10

Hi All, I'm pleased to announce hoauth-0.3.1. The major change in this version is error handling. Instead of using fail, you may now provide your own error handling function. Unfortunately I've made changes that make this version incompatible with previous ones. Although I believe updating to this new version shouldn't be difficult. Anyway, if there is anyone already using it and are having a hard time to upgrade please let me know. In summary, here is the changelog: * Error handling * RSA-SHA1 authentication method is available again; * bugfix: curl httpclient implementation hanging when using PUT and POST method; * bugfix: curl httpclient sets a timeout of 30s instead of waiting forever; * bugfix: httpclient implementation now ignores SSL certificate errors [works with self-signed certificates]; As usual feedback is highly welcome! ANNOUNCE: Utrecht Haskell Compiler (UHC), version 1.1.0
by Atze Dijkstra 22 Sep '10

22 Sep '10

Utrecht Haskell Compiler -- second release 1.1.0 ================================================ The UHC team is happy to announce the second public release of the Utrecht Haskell Compiler (UHC). UHC supports almost allmost all Haskell98 and Haskell2010 features plus some experimental extensions. The compiler runs on MacOSX, Windows (cygwin), and various Unix flavors. This second release has the following highlights relative to the previous first release: * Supports most of the Haskell2010 features. * Generic deriving [1]. * UHC knows about packages, and Cabal version 1.9.3 and later have basic support for UHC, so that Cabal can be used to build UHC packages. * For the default backend libraries are provided until including package haskell98. * The runtime system is no longer dependent on Boehm garbage collector, but uses UHCs own, a swap space collector allowing parameterization with backend specifics. * More programs from the nofib test suite compile and run. * Many smaller and larger problems fixed. For more info see http://www.cs.uu.nl/wiki/UHC Getting started & Download -------------------------- UHC is available for download as source distribution via the UHC home page: http://www.cs.uu.nl/wiki/UHC Here you will also find instructions to get started and the specifics of what UHC can and cannot do. Status of the implementation ---------------------------- Over the past year much effort by many people has been put into improving UHC, in particular to make it compile and run more library modules and test programs. Although the UHC project is very much work in progress overall reliability has improved, bugs have been fixed, and some Hackage packages compile. Warning ------- Although we think that the compiler is stable enough to compile substantial Haskell programs, we do not recommend yet to use it for any serious development work in Haskell. We ourselves use the GHC as a development platform! We think however that it provides a great platform for experimenting with language implementations, language extensions, etc. Mailing lists ------------- For UHC users and developers respectively: http://mail.cs.uu.nl/mailman/listinfo/uhc-users http://mail.cs.uu.nl/mailman/listinfo/uhc-developers Bug reporting ------------- Please report bugs at: http://code.google.com/p/uhc/issues/list The UHC Team [1] Jose Pedro Magalhaes, Atze Dijkstra, Johan Jeuring, and Andres Loeh. ANNOUNCE: Haskeline 0.6.3
by Judah Jacobson 15 Sep '10

15 Sep '10

I am pleased to announce the release of Haskeline 0.6.3: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/haskeline http://trac.haskell.org/haskeline Haskeline provides a user interface for line input in command-line programs. The library is similar in purpose to readline or editline, but since it is written in Haskell it is (hopefully) more easily used in other Haskell programs. Improvements since version 0.6.2 include the following (see CHANGES for details and a full list): * Various API additions -- in particular, "Behaviors" control the choice between terminal-style and file-style interactions. * Correct width calculations for wide characters (e.g., CJK). * Better handling of prompts containing POSIX escape sequences: http://trac.haskell.org/haskeline/wiki/ControlSequencesInPrompt * Keybinding fixes/additions: http://trac.haskell.org/haskeline/wiki/KeyBindings * Several optimizations for speed and responsiveness. Best, -Judah

PLPV 2011: Call for papers
by Wouter Swierstra 14 Sep '10

14 Sep '10

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fifth ACM SIGPLAN Workshop on Programming Languages meets Program Verification --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/plpv11 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 29th January, 2011 Austin, Texas Affiliated with POPL 2011 Overview -------- The goal of PLPV is to foster and stimulate research at the intersection of programming languages and program verification, by bringing together experts from diverse areas like types, contracts, interactive theorem proving, model checking and program analysis. Work in this area typically attempts to reduce the burden of program verification by taking advantage of particular semantic or structural properties of the programming language. Examples include dependently typed programming languages, which leverage a language's type system to specify and check richer than usual specifications, possibly with programmer-provided proof terms, extended static checking systems like ESC/Java and Spec#, which incorporate contracts and static contract verifiers. We invite submissions on all aspects, both theoretical and practical, of the integration of programming language and program verification technology. To encourage cross-pollination between different communities, we seek a broad the scope for PLPV. In particular, submissions may have diverse foundations for verification (Type-based, Hoare-logic-based, Abstract Interpretation-based, etc), target different kinds of programming languages (functional, imperative, object-oriented, etc), and apply to diverse kinds of program properties (data structure invariants, security properties, temporal protocols, resource constraints, etc). Important Dates --------------- Submission 11th October, 2010 Notification 8th November, 2010 Final Version 15th November, 2010 Workshop 29th January, 2011 Program Committee ----------------- Andrew Gordon (Microsoft Research) Chris Hawblitzel (Microsoft Research) Ranjit Jhala (University of California, San Diego, co-chair) Viktor Kuncak (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) John Matthews (Galois Inc.) James McKinna (Radboud University) Stefan Monnier (Université de Montréal) Greg Morrisett (Harvard University) Christine Paulin-Mohring (Université Paris-Sud) Wouter Swierstra (Radboud University Nijmegen , co-chair) Tachio Terauchi (Tohoku University) Submissions ----------- Submissions should fall into one of the following categories: (a) Research papers (12 pages) that describe new work on the above or related topics. Submissions in this category have an upper limit of 12 pages but shorter submissions are also encouraged. (b) Proposals for challenge problems (6 pages) which the author believes are useful benchmarks or important domains for language-based program verification techniques. Submissions in this category should be at most 6 pages in total length. Submissions should be prepared with SIGPLAN two-column conference format. Submitted papers must adhere to the SIGPLAN republication policy. Concurrent submissions to other workshops, conferences, journals, or similar forums of publication are not allowed. Publication ----------- Accepted papers will be published by the ACM and will appear in the ACM Digital library. The authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their paper to a special issue of the Journal of Formalized Reasoning devoted to papers from PLPV 2011. Student Attendees ----------------- Students with accepted papers or posters are encouraged to apply for a SIGPLAN PAC grant that will help to cover travel expenses to PLPV. Details on the PAC program and the application can be found here. PAC also offers support for companion travel.

New haskell.org server
by Ian Lynagh 09 Sep '10

09 Sep '10

Hi all, We will shortly be replacing the haskell.org server with a more modern, commercially hosted machine. For now, the new server is available as http://new-www.haskell.org/ The ghc, hugs and nhc98 websites have been copied across, and there is a copy of the wiki (although that will be resynced when we change servers). We will also be moving the mailing lists at changeover time. *** If you know of anything else that haskell.org *** *** does, and should keep doing, please let us know *** *** now or it will break soon! *** *** *** *** If you have anything else on haskell.org, *** *** please find it a new home now! *** Note that if there are other services currently running on haskell.org, this may be a good time to consider moving them to the community server instead: http://community.haskell.org/ Meanwhile, we would like to thank Paul Hudak, John Peterson, Mark Wogahn, the Yale Workstation Support team and Yale University for hosting, running and maintaining the haskell.org server for countless years. We would also like to thank the Haskell Summer of Code team for providing the funding for the new server, and the community sysadmin team for agreeing to maintain it in the future. Thanks also to Thomas Schilling and Ashley Yakeley for getting the wiki up and running, and restyling it. Thanks Ian, on behalf of the Haskell Infrastructure team.

Proposal: Form a haskell.org committee
by Ian Lynagh 09 Sep '10

09 Sep '10

Dear Haskellers, In recent years, haskell.org has started to receive assets, e.g. money from Google Summer Of Code, donations for Hackathons, and a Sparc machine for use in GHC development. We have also started spending this money: on the community server, on a server to take over hosting haskell.org itself, and on the haskell.org domain name. There is also interest in running fundraising drives for specific things such as Hackathon sponsorship and hosting fees. However, it is not currently clear who is responsible for determining what the haskell.org money should be spent on, or what are and are not acceptable uses of the domain name and hardware. To fix this problem, we propose that we create a "haskell.org committee", which is responsible for answering these sorts of questions, although for some questions they may choose to poll the community at large if they think appropriate. We suggest that the committee be composed of 5 representatives from the community, with committee members standing down after at most 3 years. Each year the committee will appoint one of their members to be the chair. As membership of "the Haskell community" is not well-defined, and voting would potentially be open to abuse if anyone were able to vote, we propose that the committee should choose their replacements from open nominations. Unfortunately, this gives us a bootstrapping problem, so we suggest that the initial committee be chosen from open nominations by some of the people who currently de-facto end up making the decisions currently: Duncan Coutts, Isaac Jones, Ian Lynagh, Don Stewart and Malcolm Wallace. These 5 would still be elligible to nominate themselves. Two of the initial members will stand down after one year, and two after two years, in order to bootstrap rolling membership turnover. We would love to hear feedback from you about this proposal, so that we can see whether the proposal, or something similar, has consensus amongst the community! A related issue is that haskell.org does not currently exist as a legal entity. We also hope to solve that problem, but we are still gathering information so that the community can make an informed decision, so I won't say more about that for now. Thanks Ian
