Speaking of lambdas and gotos, some of you may remember the great Professor Eiichi Goto of Japan. You can see an obituary at: http://www.sigsam.org/bulletin/articles/153/goto.pdf He was one of the Japanese pioneers of Lisp, symbolic computing, and architectural support for symbolic computing. He was one of the developers of "hash-consing". He used to joke about his own name, along the lines of: "I'm considered harmful. They're all trying to get rid of me." Nikhil

ANN: cmonad 0.1.1
by Lennart Augustsson 30 Mar '09

30 Mar '09

I've uploaded my CMonad package to Hackage. It allows you to write Haskell code in a C style. Unfortunately, GHC lacks certain optimizations to make efficient code when using CMonad, so instead of C speed you get low speed. Example: Computing some Fibonacci numbers: fib = do { a <- arrayU[40]; i <- auto 0; a[0] =: 1; a[1] =: 1; for (i =: 2, (i :: EIO Int) < 40, i += 1) $ do { a[i] =: a[i-1] + a[i-2]; }; retrn (a[39]); } Example: Copying stdin to stdout: cat = do { c <- auto 0; while ((c =: getchar()) >= 0) $ do { putchar(c); }; return (); } -- Lennart

Haskell Weekly News: Issue 111 - March 28, 2009
by Brent Yorgey 29 Mar '09

29 Mar '09

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Haskell Weekly News http://sequence.complete.org/hwn/20090328 Issue 111 - March 28, 2009 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to issue 111 of HWN, a newsletter covering developments in the [1]Haskell community. Announcements CHP package. Neil Brown [2]announced the release of version 1.2.0 of the [3]CHP library (which supports explicit message-passing concurrency in Haskell), with various bug-fixes and a new "clock" synchronisation primitive. smartword 0.0.0.5 Web based flash card for Word Smart I and II vocabularies. Ki Yung Ahn [4]announced the release of [5]smartword 0.0.0.5, a web based flash card system for Word Smart I and II, a popular book series for studying GRE vocabularies. HackMail 0.0 -- Procmail + Monads = Awesome!. Joe Fredette [6]announced his very second Hackage upload, [7]HackMail. Hackmail is a Procmail-alike, though it doesn't (yet) support procmail syntax. It dynamically loads a haskell source file and then sits as a daemon watching a directory for new emails. The source file contains a function which sorts email and delivers it to some directory. FallingBlocks 0.1. Ben Sanders [8]announced [9]fallingblocks, a Tetris clone using SDL. io-capture-0.2 capturing std(out|err) in IO action. Yusaku Hashimoto [10]announced the release of [11]io-capture 0.2, a library to capture stdout and stderr in an IO action. It exports a function capture, which takes an IO action and a String representing the entire input, and returns Strings representing the data written to stdout and stderr. wxAsteroids 1.0. Henk-Jan van Tuyl [12]announced [13]wxAsteroids, a game demonstrating the wxHaskell GUI. The votes are in!. Eelco Lempsink [14]announced that the [15]results of the Haskell logo competition are in! Congratulations to Jeff Wheeler on his winning design. Making videos of your project. Don Stewart [16]described how to create short screencasts showing off your latest awesome Haskell project. WinGhci, a GUI for GHCI on Windows. Pepe Gallardo [17]announced the first release of [18]WinGhci, a simple GUI for GHCI on Windows. It is closely based on WinHugs, and provides similar functionality. hranker: Basic utility for ranking a list of items (e.g. for the logo poll). Robin Green [19]announced [20]hranker, a command-line utility that helps the user rank a list of items (of any type implementing Show, Eq and Ord). The hope is that the code is sufficiently clear that it could also serve as an educational piece of code, especially for people wanting to learn how to use the HCL library. salvia-0.1, salvia-extras-0.1. Sebastiaan Visser [21]announced a new version of [22]Salvia, a lightweight Haskell Web Server Framework. Changes in this release include easier dependencies, some new default handler environments that simplify setting up a server application, support for keep-alive, a great deal of additional documentation, support for Windows, and various cleanup and bug fixes. Haddock 2.4.2. David Waern [23]announced a new release of [24]Haddock, the Haskell documentation tool. This is a bug fix release only, and it's the same version that will ship with GHC 6.10.2, unless any important problems are discovered before the GHC release. Because the .haddock file format has changed, links to previously installed documentation will not work when generating documentation using this version. ansi-terminal, ansi-wl-pprint - ANSI terminal support for Haskell. Max Bolingbroke [25]announced the [26]ansi-terminal and [27]ansi-wl-pprint packages, which allow Haskell programs to produce much richer console output by allowing colorisation, emboldening and so on. Both Unix-like (OS X, Linux) and Windows operating systems are supported (via a pure Haskell ANSI emulation layer for Windows). I/O library for Windows. Felix Martini [28]announced the [29]package, an I/O library for Windows using Windows API functions with I/O completion port support. The main goal of this library is to support Simon Marlow's new Handle API once he has added that to GHC. The library also has a compatibility module for socket functions from the network-bytestring package. Discussion Grouping - Map / Reduce. Günther Schmidt [30]asked about a way to lazily group an unordered list of key/value pairs, leading to some interesting solutions and discussion of preserving laziness. about Haskell code written to be "too smart". Manlio Perillo began an [31]epic discussion about Haskell coding style, idioms, pedagogy, and much, much more. Blog noise [32]Haskell news from the [33]blogosphere. * >>> : [34]I18n and Haskell. jhc dependencies for ghc-6.10.1
by Philip K.F. Hölzenspies 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

Dear John, et al. I will be trying jhc out, because it sounds like a good idea for some of my number-crunching apps. I just wanted to tell you how my build with ghc-6.10.1 (out-of-the-box) went, although it's not completely fair, because I may have some things from hackage installed already. Anyhow, I followed your requirement list (binary,zlib,utf8-string) and ran into the following missing dependencies: readline fgl These were removed from ghc and extralibs, resp. You may want to list these on your installation page for 6.10 builds. Also, people may like to be pointed to this ticket (I ran into this): http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/2897 Two more things that struck me: - After the installation of jhc, I just had to try it: took a clean directory fresh from the tarball, did ./configure --with-hc=jhc && make. Unfortunately: /home/holzensp/usr/bin/jhc -I./StringTable -I./cbits -I./cbits -optc-std=c99 -optc-O2 -optc-Wall StringTable/StringTable_cbits.c -c -o StringTable/StringTable_cbits.o Error: Module not found: StringTable/StringTable_cbits.c make[1]: *** [StringTable/StringTable_cbits.o] Error 1 - After the initial installation a directory appeared in my $HOME/usr/share, called jhc-0.5. It seems not all version numbers were bumped ;) Regards, Philip

WMM'09 call for papers
by urban＠math.lmu.de 25 Mar '09

25 Mar '09

Call for Papers 4rd Informal ACM SIGPLAN Workshop on Mechanizing Metatheory Edinburgh, Scotland Co-located with ICFP'09. http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~sweirich/wmm/ Important Dates * Submission deadline: 19 June 2009 * Author Notification: 24 July 2009 * Workshop: 4 September 2009 Workshop Description Researchers in programming languages have long felt the need for tools to help formalize and check their work. With advances in language technology demanding deep understanding of ever larger and more complex languages, this need has become urgent. There are a number of automated proof assistants being developed within the theorem proving community that seem ready or nearly ready to be applied in this domain-yet, despite numerous individual efforts in this direction, the use of proof assistants in programming language research is still not commonplace: the available tools are confusingly diverse, difficult to learn, inadequately documented, and lacking in specific library facilities required for work in programming languages. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers who have experience using automated proof assistants for programming language metatheory, and those who are interested in using tool support for formalizing their work. One starting point for discussion will be the obstacles that hinder mechanization (whether they be pragmatic or technical), and what users and developers can do to overcome them. Format The workshop will consist of presentations by the participants, selected from submitted abstracts. It will focus on providing a fruitful environment for interaction and presentation of ongoing work. Participants are invited to submit working notes, source files, and abstracts for distribution to the attendees, but as the workshop has no formal proceedings, contributions may still be submitted for publication elsewhere. (See the SIGPLAN republication policy for more details.) Scope The scope of the workshop includes, but is not limited to: * Tool demonstrations: proof assistants, logical frameworks, visualizers, etc. * Libraries for programming language metatheory. * Formalization techniques, especially with respect to binding issues. * Analysis and comparison of solutions to the POPLmark challenge. * Examples of formalized programming language metatheory. * Proposals for new challenge problems that benchmark programming language work. Submission Guidelines Email submissions to urbanc AT in.tum.de. Submissions should be no longer than two pages in PDF and printable on A4 sized paper. Persons for whom this poses a hardship should contact the program chair. Conference Organization Program Committee * Nick Benton, Microsoft Research Cambridge * Olivier Danvy, University of Aarhus * Daniel Licata, Carnegie Mellon University * Francois Pottier, INRIA Paris-Rocquencourt * Christian Urban, TU Munich (chair) Workshop Organizers * Karl Crary, Carnegie Mellon University * Michael Norrish, National ICT Australia * Stephanie Weirich, University of Pennsylvania Previous Workshops * Victoria, 2008 * Freiburg, 2007 * Portland, 2006 ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

ANNOUNCE: jhc 0.6.0 Haskell Compiler
by John Meacham 24 Mar '09

24 Mar '09

Hi, I am pleased to announce jhc 0.6.0, It has been a long time since an official release, so there have been a lot of changes. Jhc is an optimizing haskell compiler that focuses on creating fast and portable code. Jhc is still mainly of interest to jhc hackers and developers than the general haskell public, but it is starting to see use in embedded development with haskell so I decided to make more public announcements of major releases in the future. some links: The jhc homepage: http://repetae.net/computer/jhc/ Installation Instructions: http://repetae.net/computer/jhc/building.shtml The jhc manual: http://repetae.net/computer/jhc/manual.html And I am happy to announce, there is now a yum repository* for jhc and my other projects (such as DrIFT), so if you use an rpm based linux distribution, you can keep up to date with jhc official releases by doing: ; rpm -i http://repetae.net/yum/repetae-repo-1.0-3.noarch.rpm ; yum install jhc A couple recent changes: jhc now comes bundled with the 'containers' and 'applicative' library making it much easier to compile many haskell programs out there. (Data.Graph, Data.IntMap, Data.IntSet, Data.Map, Data.Sequence, Data.Set, Data.Tree, Control.Applicative, Control.Arrow, Control.Category, Data.Foldable, Data.Traversable) signifigant speed and resource usage improvements in compilation time. transparent cross compilation support for creating windows programs on a unix box. (or iPhone/Nokia Tablet/etc..) If you are interested in jhc development, please sign up on the jhc mailing list here: http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/jhc John * I would love to get proper 'deb's and BSD packages built also automatically, if anyone wants to help with this, please join the list and let us know. -- John Meacham - ⑆repetae.net⑆john⑈

Cabal handles this automatically for you, by hiding everything by default, and then enabling only those things explicitly listed.
