********************************************************* * The Fourth International Workshop * * on * * Programming Language Interference and Dependence * * * * co-located with LOPSTR'08, PPDP'08 and SAS'08 * * * * 15 July, 2008, Valencia, Spain * * * * Venue: The Technical University of Valencia * * * * 1st Call for Contributions * * * * http://www.clip.dia.fi.upm.es/Conferences/PLID08 * * * ********************************************************* Important Dates =============== Expression of interest June 1, 2008 Extended abstract June 15, 2008 Workshop July 15, 2008 Workshop Description ==================== Interference and dependence are closely related concepts, the first being the observable phenomenon connected to the second. Interference essentially means that behaviour of some parts of a dynamic system may influence the behaviour of other parts of the system. Dependence specifies the relation between the semantics of sub-components of a dynamic system. Discovering, measuring and controlling interference is essential in many aspects of modern computer science, in particular in security, program analysis and verification, debugging, systems specification, model checking, program manipulation, program slicing, reverse engineering, data mining, distributed databases and systems biology. Doing these things requires theories, models and semantics for interference and dependence, as well as algorithms and tools for analysis and reasoning about interference and dependence. The aim of this workshop is to gather together the community of people that study dependence and interference from the different points of view in order to generate new possible research directions. PLID is devoted to bridging all these communities and assisting work towards a common goal, providing the appropriate environment for reasoning about the state of the art in interference and dependence. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Security against unwanted interference and dependence * Models and theories of program interference * Algorithms for reducing or removing interference or for ameliorating its effects * Theory and foundations of program slicing and related dependence analyses * Resource declassification theories * Semantics of dependence and interference * Analyses based on interference and dependence * Abstract interpretation for dependence and interference * Dependence and interference in specifications * Slicing models and specifications * Interaction between dependence and refinement Keynote Speaker =============== Gilles Barthe, IMDEA-software (Madrid, Spain) Submission ========== The workshop welcomes contributions of on-going work and ideas in the field of dependence and interference. Those who are interested in having a talk at the workshop and/or discussing issues related with these subjects are invited to send your expression of interest to Samir Genaim (samir(a)clip.dia.fi.upm.es) before June 1st, 2008. There will be no formal publication of papers. A web-page will be organised collecting all the workshop contributions. Submitted extended abstracts should be of at most 10 pages LNCS-style and should be sent before June 15th 2008. Google summer of code
by Malcolm Wallace 06 Mar '08

06 Mar '08

Reply-To: haskell-cafe(a)haskell.org Google Summer of Code As many of you will already know, Google is running its "Summer of Code" project again this year, and haskell.org is once again going to apply to be a mentoring organisation. Are you a student who would like to earn money for hacking in Haskell? Or are you a non-student who has a cool idea for a coding project but no time to do it yourself? Well, our wiki to gather ideas is now up-and-running again: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/summer-of-code Add yourself to the list of interested people! Especially potential mentors. There are some ideas still there from last year, in the trac tickets. However, due to the amount of spam accumulating there, I suggest that this year, we use the haskell-cafe email list as a place to put out project ideas, solicit feedback on them, and look for interested people. Prefix any message subject line with with [GSoC] to help others find them. Google will start accepting student applications on 24th March, but now is the time to start gathering thoughts and matching up interesting ideas with interested people. The official timeline is as follows: March 12: Mentoring organization application deadline March 17: List of accepted mentoring organizations published March 24: Student application period opens March 31: Student application deadline Interim Period: we review and rank student proposals April 14: List of accepted student applications published Interim Period: Students learn more about their project communities May 26: Students begin coding; Google begins issuing initial payments July 14: Google begins issuing mid-term payments August 11: Suggested end of coding August 18: Definite end of coding Sept 1: Final evaluation deadline; Google begins issuing final payments Sept 3: Students upload code to Google (required) Regards, Malcolm

ANN: Parsec 3.0.0
by Derek Elkins 06 Mar '08

06 Mar '08

This is a first release of the Parsec 3, the Google Summer of Code of Paolo Martini. The main changes are: * The Parser monad has been generalized into a ParserT monad transformer. * The parsers have been generalized to work over a stream of any type, in particular, with byte strings. * There is Haddock documentation for almost all functions in the Text.Parsec tree. * The Parser monad now has Applicative/Alternative instances * A "compatibility" Text.ParserCombinators.Parsec tree for the old Parsec. It's not perfect, but it should work with most Parsec 2 code. This package should be installable from with cabal install or with the standard cabal invocations. Cabal release: http://hackage.haskell.org/cgi-bin/hackage-scripts/package/parsec-3.0.0 The darcs repository is at: http://code.haskell.org/parsec3 Note that this package is a new version of the parsec package and so will hide the old parsec-2.1.0.0 package. I would like to thank Antoine Latter for a variety of significant patches including updating the compatibility modules and a large effort testing them. [P.S. I will probably be lacking an Internet connection over the next few days.]

ANN: Takusen 0.8
by Alistair Bayley 05 Mar '08

05 Mar '08

Oleg and I are pleased to announce the release of Takusen 0.8. (Don Stewart did an interim 0.7 release for us a few weeks ago, and added us to Hackage. This release is a tidy-up of some loose ends, and some bug fixes. Hence, I've summarise the changes since the 0.6 release.) Changes since 0.6: - ODBC support. This still has a few gaps (and probably bugs and rough edges) but should be fairly usable. - support for reusable/persistent sessions, so you can hang onto the connection object between invocations of withSession (this was in release 0.6 but omitted from the release notes). - improvements to the Cabal Setup scripts, which should give better experiences for ghc-6.4, ghc-6.6, and ghc-6.8. The (eventual) 1.4 release of Cabal should be able to build our haddock docs, too. - improved UTF8 decoder (marshals directly from buffer). The release bundle: http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/Takusen/0.8/Takusen-0.8.tar.gz The latest code: darcs get http://darcs.haskell.org/takusen Docs: http://darcs.haskell.org/takusen/doc/html/index.html A comprehensive description of API usage can be found in the documentation for module Database.Enumerator (look for the Usage section): http://darcs.haskell.org/takusen/doc/html/Database-Enumerator.html Future plans: - FreeTDS backend (Sybase and MS Sql Server) - support for Blobs and Clobs For those of you unfamiliar with Takusen, here is our HCAR blurb: Takusen is a library for accessing DBMS's. Like HSQL, we support arbitrary SQL statements (currently strings, extensible to anything that can be converted to a string). Takusen's `unique-selling-point' is safety and efficiency. We statically ensure all acquired database resources - such as cursors, connection and statement handles - are released, exactly once, at predictable times. Takusen can avoid loading the whole result set in memory, and so can handle queries returning millions of rows in constant space. Takusen also supports automatic marshalling and unmarshalling of results and query parameters. These benefits come from the design of query result processing around a left-fold enumerator. Currently we fully support ODBC, Oracle, Sqlite, and PostgreSQL.

Announce: category-extras 0.1
by Dan Doel 01 Mar '08

01 Mar '08

Hello everyone, While fooling about with generalized tries a night or two ago, I found myself once again interacting with fixed points of shape functors and the like, and so decided it was time to finish cabalizing David Menendez' excellent category theory inspired modules.[1] So, it is my pleasure to announce version 0.1 of category-extras. This is an initial import of the code, with only what work it took to get things compiling properly. As such, some of the documentation is a bit scanty, and there is some overlap with other packages (notably, TypeCompose, off the top of my head), but I hope to rectify that later. Notable bits include: * Control.Comonad * Control.Comonad.Context -- the state-in-context monad * Control.Functor.Adjunction -- a class for adjoint functors, and their associated (co)monads * Control.Recursion -- Various generalized recursion operators (cata/zygo/histo/apomorphisms) -- A class for associating fixpoint data types to their shape functors Also included are some Data.* modules with some comonadic data types (infinite trees and streams, for instance), but they are in the as-yet-poorly-documented section of the package. Haddock 2.0 is required to build what documentation there is for Control.Functor.Transform, as it uses type operators. However, the rest should be compatible with earlier versions of haddock. Some modules are portable Haskell98, but many use various extensions (rank-2 types and functional dependencies being the most common). Links: * hackage: http://hackage.haskell.org/cgi-bin/hackage-scripts/package/category-extras-… * darcs: http://code.haskell.org/~dolio/category-extras/ If you identify any issues with the package, or simply have some wild category theoretic abstractions that you think should be made available to Haskell programmers at large, feel free let me know. -- Dan Doel [1] The original home of these modules is here: http://www.eyrie.org/~zednenem/2004/hsce/

2ND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION 6TH INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING 2008 (AFP ’08) RADBOUD UNIVERSITY NIJMEGEN AND UTRECHT UNIVERSITY, THE NETHERLANDS MAY 19-24, 2008 http://www.st.cs.ru.nl/AFP_TFP_2008/ [ EARLY REGISTRATION OPENS ] AFP is a series of international summer schools which aims to bring computer scientists, in particular young researchers and programmers, up to date with the latest advances in practical advanced functional programming. Functional programming emphasizes the evaluation of expressions rather than the execution of commands. We focus on functional programming techniques in “programming in the real world” and bridge the gap between results presented at programming conferences and material from textbooks on functional programming. In this school you will receive in depth lectures about advanced functional programming techniques, taught by experts in the field. Lectures are accompanied by practical problems to be solved by the students at the school. AFP 2008 is hosted by the Radboud University Nijmegen, and Utrecht University, The Netherlands, and will be held in the rural setting of Center Parcs “Het Heijderbos”, Heijen (in the vicinity of Nijmegen), The Netherlands. AFP 2008 is co-located with the 9th Symposium on Trends in Functional Programming (TFP’08), which is held after AFP’08. PROGRAM INFORMATION The following speakers will give the lectures (in alphabetic order): Umut Acar (Toyota Technological Institute, University of Chicago, US) Richard Bird (University of Oxford, UK) Olivier Danvy (University of Aarhus, DK) Johan Jeuring (Utrecht University, NL) Mark Jones (Portland State University, US) Ulf Norell (Chalmers University, SE) Simon Peyton Jones (Microsoft Research, UK) Rinus Plasmeijer (Radboud University Nijmegen, NL) During the summer school, all participants receive printed lecture notes. Participants are expected to have a notebook, in order to be able to participate with the practical problems. After the summer school, all lecture notes will be revised, reviewed, and published in the LNCS series of Springer. All registered participants receive a copy of these lecture notes. VENUE INFORMATION AFP (and TFP) is held in The Netherlands, at Center Parcs “Het Heijderbos” which is a holiday resort in the woodlands near the city of Nijmegen. We accomodate participants in DeLuxe Cottages, each of which has three separate bed-rooms, shared bathroom, toilet, kitchen, and terrace. Cottages will be shared by three participants. If you wish to reduce costs, you can choose to share a bedroom. The summer school and symposium will take place in the business center of the venue. Breakfast, lunch and diner is included within the limits of the venue. The resort features, amongst others, a sub-tropical swimming pool (free for participants), restaurants, shops, water sports lake, midget golf court, squash court, and outdoor and indoor tennis courts. Nijmegen is considered to be the oldest city of the Netherlands, being approximately 2000 years old. Nijmegen is located at the east border of the Netherlands, near Germany. Nijmegen can be reached easily from several airports such as Schiphol airport, Eindhoven airport, and Düsseldorf airport, as well as by train and car. Conveniently close to Center Parcs “Het Heijderbos” you will find airport Weeze in Germany. The venue Center Parcs “Het Heijderbos” can be reached from Nijmegen by train to Boxmeer (25 minutes). From there you will need to order a taxi. The venue can also be reached by car: parking is free for participants of AFP and TFP. 29 Feb '08

3RD CALL FOR PAPERS TRENDS IN FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING 2008 RADBOUD UNIVERSITY NIJMEGEN, THE NETHERLANDS MAY 26-28, 2008 INVITED SPEAKER: PROF. HENK BARENDREGT http://www.st.cs.ru.nl/AFP_TFP_2008/ [EXTENDED DEADLINE SUBMISSIONS: march 10 2008] [ SUBMISSION SITE IS OPEN ] [ REGISTRATION SITE IS OPEN ] The symposium on Trends in Functional Programming (TFP) is an international forum for researchers with interests in all aspects of functional programming languages, focusing on providing a broad view of current and future trends in Functional Programming. It aspires to be a lively environment for presenting the latest research results through acceptance by extended abstracts and full papers. A formal post-symposium refereeing process selects the best articles presented at the symposium for publication in a high-profile volume. TFP 2008 is hosted by the Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and will be held in the rural setting of Center Parcs “Het Heijderbos”, Heijen (in the vicinity of Nijmegen), The Netherlands. TFP 2008 is co-located with the 6th Int’l. Summer School on Advanced Functional Programming (AFP’08), which is held immediately before TFP’08. SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM The symposium recognizes that new trends may arise through various routes. As part of the Symposium's focus on trends we therefore identify the following five article categories. High-quality articles are solicited in any of these categories: Research: leading-edge, previously unpublished research. Position: on what new trends should or should not be. Project: descriptions of recently started new projects. Evaluation: what lessons can be drawn from a finished project. Overview: summarizing work with respect to a trendy subject. Articles must be original and not submitted for simultaneous publication to any other forum. They may consider any aspect of functional programming: theoretical, implementation-oriented, or more experience-oriented. Applications of functional programming techniques to other languages are also within the scope of the symposium. Contributions on the following subject areas are particularly welcomed: * Dependently Typed Functional Programming * Validation and Verification of Functional Programs * Debugging for Functional Languages * Functional Programming and Security * Functional Programming and Mobility * Functional Programming to Animate/Prototype/Implement Systems from Formal or Semi-Formal Specifications * Functional Languages for Telecommunications Applications * Functional Languages for Embedded Systems * Functional Programming Applied to Global Computing * Functional GRIDs * Functional Programming Ideas in Imperative or Object-Oriented Settings (and the converse) * Interoperability with Imperative Programming Languages * Novel Memory Management Techniques * Parallel/Concurrent Functional Languages * Program Transformation Techniques * Empirical Performance Studies * Abstract/Virtual Machines and Compilers for Functional Languages * New Implementation Strategies * Any new emerging trend in the functional programming area If you are in doubt on whether your article is within the scope of TFP, please contact the TFP 2008 program chairs, Peter Achten and Pieter Koopman, at afp_tfp_2008(a)cs.ru.nl. SUBMISSION AND DRAFT PROCEEDINGS Acceptance of articles for presentation at the symposium is based on the review of full papers (15 pages) and extended abstracts (at least 3 pages) by the program committee. TFP encourages PhD students to submit papers. PhD students may request the program committee to provide extensive feedback on their full papers at the time of submission. Full papers describing work accepted for presentation must be completed before the symposium for publication in the draft proceedings and on-line. Further details can be found at the TFP 2008 website http://www.st.cs.ru.nl/AFP_TFP_2008/.
