by Simon Marlow 15 Mar '05

15 Mar '05

============================================================= The (Interactive) Glasgow Haskell Compiler -- version 6.4 ============================================================= The GHC Team is delighted to announce a new major release of GHC. It has been a long time since the last major release (Dec 2003!), and a lot has happened: - GADTs (Generalised Abstract Datatypes) are supported - STM (Software Transactional Memory) is implemented - Full support for Cabal and a much improved package framework - Better support for mutually-recursive modules - A complete rewrite of the back end - Accurate source locations in error messages - Lots of new libraries The full release notes are here: http://haskell.org/ghc/docs/6.4/html/users_guide/release-6-4.html How to get it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you haven't already done so, please fill in the GHC Survey: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/survey/start.cgi We'll use the information you give us to improve future releases of GHC. The easy way to get GHC is to go to the WWW page, which should be self-explanatory: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ Binary packages will become available as they are built - if the package for your system isn't available yet, please try again later. We supply binary builds in the native package format for various flavours of Linux and BSD, and in Windows Installer (MSI) form for Windows folks. Binary builds for other platforms are available as a .tar.gz which can be installed wherever you want. The source distribution is also available from the same place. Background ~~~~~~~~~~ Haskell is a standard lazy functional programming language; the current language version is Haskell 98, agreed in December 1998 and revised December 2002. GHC is a state-of-the-art programming suite for Haskell. Included is an optimising compiler generating good code for a variety of platforms, together with an interactive system for convenient, quick development. The distribution includes space and time profiling facilities, a large collection of libraries, and support for various language extensions, including concurrency, exceptions, and foreign language interfaces (C, whatever). GHC is distributed under a BSD-style open source license. A wide variety of Haskell related resources (tutorials, libraries, specifications, documentation, compilers, interpreters, references, contact information, links to research groups) are available from the Haskell home page (see below). On-line GHC-related resources ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Relevant URLs on the World-Wide Web: GHC home page http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ Haskell home page http://www.haskell.org/ comp.lang.functional FAQ http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gmh/faq.html System requirements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To compile programs with GHC, you need a machine with 64+MB memory, GCC and perl. This release is known to work on the following platforms: * i386-unknown-{linux,*bsd,mingw32} * x86_64-unknown-linux * powerpc-apple-darwin (MacOS X) * powerpc-apple-linux * sparc-sun-solaris2 (may have bitrotted due to lack of attention) Ports to other platforms are possible with varying degrees of difficulty. The builder's guide on the web site gives a complete run-down of what ports work and how to go about porting to a new platform; it can be found at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/building/building-guide.html Mailing lists ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We run mailing lists for GHC users and bug reports; to subscribe, use the web interfaces at http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-users http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-bugs There are several other haskell and ghc-related mailing lists on www.haskell.org; for the full list, see http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/ Please report bugs using our SourceForge page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ghc/ or send them to glasgow-haskell-bugs(a)haskell.org. instance Bounded Double
by Frederik Eaton 14 Mar '05

14 Mar '05

Shouldn't Double, Float, etc. be instances of Bounded? I've declared e.g. instance Bounded Double where minBound = -(1/0) maxBound = 1/0 in a module where I needed it and there doesn't seem to be any issue with the definition... Frederik -- http://ofb.net/~frederik/

FroCoS 2005: Second Call for Papers
by Bernhard Gramlich 12 Mar '05

12 Mar '05

[Apologies for multiple copies] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- FroCoS 2005: SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5th International Workshop on Frontiers of Combining Systems (FroCoS 2005) Vienna, Austria, September 19-21, 2005 http://www.logic.at/frocos05/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND In various areas of computer science, such as logic, computation, program development and verification, artificial intelligence, and automated reasoning, there is an obvious need for using specialized formalisms and inference mechanisms for special tasks. In order to be usable in practice, these specialized systems must be combined with each other, and they must be integrated into general purpose systems. The development of general techniques and methods for the combination and integration of special formally defined systems, as well as for the analysis and modularization of complex systems has been initiated in many areas. The International Workshop on Frontiers of Combining Systems (FroCoS) traditionally focuses on this type of research questions and activities and aims at promoting progress in the field. The previous FroCoS workshops were held in Munich (1996), Amsterdam (1998), Nancy (2000) and Santa Margherita Ligure (2002). In 2004, FroCoS joined IJCAR 2004, the 2nd International Joint Conference on Automated Reasoning. Like its predecessors, FroCoS 2005 wants to offer a common forum for research activities in the general area of combination, modularization and integration of systems (with emphasis on logic-based ones), and of their practical use. TOPICS Typical topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * combination of logics (e.g., modal logics, logics in AI, ...); * combination of decision procedures, of satisfiability procedures, and of constraint solving techniques (e.g. unification and matching algorithms, general symbolic constraints, numerical constraints); * combinations and modularity in term rewriting; * integration of equational and other theories into deductive systems (e.g. theory resolution, constraint resolution, constraint paramodulation, ...); * combination of deduction systems and computer algebra; * integration of data structures (e.g., sets, multisets, lists) into CLP formalisms and deduction processes; * model/problem analysis and decomposition (e.g. isolating tractable or loosely connected sub-problems, global constraints design, etc.) * hybrid methods for deduction, resolution and constraint propagation (e.g., combinations of local and global, complete and propagation techniques) * hybrid systems in computational linguistics, knowledge representation, natural language semantics, and human computer interaction; * logical modelling of multi-agent systems; * logical aspects of combining and modularizing programs and specifications. INVITED SPEAKERS (confirmed) * Silvio Ghilardi (U Milano) * Fausto Giunchiglia (U Trento & ITC-IRST) * Eric Monfroy (U Nantes & UTFSM/Chile) SUBMISSIONS The programme committee seeks high-quality submissions that are original and not submitted for publication elsewhere. Submission is electronic in postscript or PDF format. Submitted papers must conform to the Springer LNCS style, preferably using LaTeX2e and the Springer llncs class files. Submission categories include full papers, for work on foundations, applications, implementation techniques, and problem sets (up to 15 pages), as well as system descriptions (up to 8 pages), for describing publicly available systems. The submission deadline is May 2, 2005 for titles and abstracts, and May 9, 2005 for papers. For further information and submission instructions see the FroCoS 2005 web page: http://www.logic.at/frocos05/. PROCEEDINGS Accepted papers will appear in the proceedings of the conference, published as a volume of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series, Springer-Verlag. Proceedings will be available at the time of the conference. CFP: APPSEM05 Workshop
by Hans-Wolfgang Loidl 12 Mar '05

12 Mar '05

[ apologies for multiple copies of this CFP ] 1st CALL FOR PAPERS 3rd APPSEM II Workshop (APPSEM05) Frauenchiemsee, Germany, 12-15 September 2005 http://lionel.tcs.ifi.lmu.de/APPSEM05/ Background and Objectives APPSEM II (Applied Semantics II) is a 36-month FP5 IST thematic network project that started in January 2003. The network consists of 20 sites (with a number of subsites) and is coordinated by Martin Hofmann (LMU München). The APPSEM'05 workshop will be held on the island Frauenchiemsee, in the lake of Chiemsee, approximately 100 km south east of Munich. This is the 3rd general annual meeting of the network. Previous meetings took place in Nottingham (APPSEM'03) and in Tallinn (APPSEM'04). All members of the network are invited to attend, but participation of non-members from both academia and industry with interests in application-oriented programming language semantics is actively encouraged, too. The purpose of the workshop is to present new results and plan future work in each of the following nine themes of the network: - Program structuring: object-oriented programming, modules, - Proof assistants, functional programming, and dependent types, - Program analysis, generation, and configuration, - Specification and verification methods, - Types and type inference in programming, - Games, sequentiality, and abstract machines, - Semantic methods for distributed computing, - Resource models and web data, - Continuous phenomena in Computer Science. For each theme there will be a session of contributed talks. In addition, there will be several invited talks, an industrial panel session, a brainstorming session and a business meeting. Following on from the workshop, an informal proceedings will be published on the web. Full refereeing will be done on revised versions of the papers after the workshop with a selection of papers being published in a formal proceedings. Submission Two kinds of contributions are solicited: - short presentations of circa 15 minutes each - full presentations of circa 30 minutes each Submission for short presentations Authors should submit a short abstract of maximal 2 pages. Short presentations offer the opportunity to advertise any work relevant for APPSEM II, either completed or in progress. These submissions will be judged by the programme committee according to interest and relevance to APPSEM II; the PC will try to accommodate in the workshop programme all short presentations that meet these criteria. Submission for full presentations Submission of full presentations is in 2 phases: phase 1 focusses on relevance of the topic to the APPSEM remit; phase 2 involves full refereeing. Phase 1: Authors should submit an extended abstract of maximal 10 pages, excluding appendices. The PC encourages high quality extended abstracts that can be considered for formal publication within few months. The submissions will be ranked by the PC according to quality and relevance to APPSEM II themes. Successful submissions will get a 30 minute slot for presentation at the workshop, and will be considered for phase 2. Other submissions will be automatically considered for 15 minute presentation slots. Authors of submissions to phase 1 automatically express a commitment to submit to phase 2 if accepted. Phase 2: Authors should submit a full paper (max 20 pages excluding appendices) that will be refereed according to usual scientific standards after the workshop. Selected papers will be published in the proceedings for the workshop. We expect to have 10-12 contributions published in the final proceedings. The exact format of these final proceedings is yet to be decided. Important dates - Submission for short presentations (max 2 pages): 8 July 2005 - Submission for full presentations (max 10 pages): 8 July 2005 - Notification of acceptance (phase 1): 12 August 2005 - Workshop: 12-15 September 2005 Programme committee The programme committee consists of one or two scientists per theme and a chairman. - Gilles Barthe - Gavin Bierman - Thierry Coquand - Pierre-Louis Curien - Peter Dybier - Philippa Gardner - Chris Hankin - Fritz Henglein - Martin Hofmann (Chair) - Neil Jones - Achim Jung - Peter O'Hearn - Eugenio Moggi - Andrew Pitts - Francois Pottier - Didier Remy - Uday Reddy - Glynn Winskel Venue The picturesque small island Frauenchiemsee is home of a Benedictine monastery, which nowadays also hosts seminars. Founded in 722 by Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria, its most famous abbess was Irmengard (died 866; beatified 1928), great-granddaughter of Charlemagne. Other historically recorded abbesses are Sabina Preindorfer (died 1609) und Magdalena Haidenbucher (died 1650). Until the 11th century the monastery was directly subordinated to the Holy Empire, later on it was subordinated to the Archbishop of Salzburg. Organisers The workshop is organized by Martin Hofmann, Hans-Wolfgang Loidl, Eva Back, Konstantin Kutzkow (Institute for Informatics, Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet Muenchen).

ANNOUNCE: Hugs interim release
by ross＠soi.city.ac.uk 12 Mar '05

12 Mar '05

Chasing the Jones's, we are pleased to announce an interim release of Hugs98, primarily targeted at Unix systems to gain experience with new features, especially Cabal. It is available from the Hugs web page: http://www.haskell.org/hugs/ The new Cabal-based library build system has the potential to make building on Windows easier, but it's not there yet. Volunteers welcome. Feature highlights of this new release are: - The default current module is now the empty module Hugs.Base instead of the Prelude. - The Char type and the Char module now support Unicode as specified in the Haskell 98 Report (contributed by Dmitry Golubovsky). - The new -X option groups several options into one argument. - The syntax of the ffihugs command has changed: the +G and +L options are gone, and a new +i option can be used to specify include files. - Hugs now has basic support for Cabal. - Numerous bug fixes since the previous major release in Nov 2003. The home page for Hugs is at http://haskell.org/hugs. Send email to hugs-users-request(a)haskell.org to join the hugs-users mailing list. Bug reports should be sent to hugs-bugs(a)haskell.org. Send email to hugs-bugs-request(a)haskell.org to subscribe to the hugs-bugs list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Hugs 98 system is Copyright (c) Mark P Jones, Alastair Reid, the Yale Haskell Group, and the OGI School of Science & Engineering at OHSU, 1994-2005, All rights reserved. ANNOUNCE: nhc98-1.18 and hmake-3.10
by Malcolm Wallace 11 Mar '05

11 Mar '05

To complement today's fresh release of ghc-6.4.... ------------------------- nhc98-1.18 + hmake-3.10 ------------------------- http://haskell.org/nhc98 http://haskell.org/hmake We are pleased to announce a new release of the nhc98 compiler and the hmake compilation manager. nhc98 is portable to almost any 32-bit unix-like platform, and can be easily bootstrapped with just a C compiler if no existing Haskell compiler is available. Hmake plays happily with ghc and hbc as well as nhc98. This release is mainly a maintenance refresh, fixing numerous bugs, and adding support for many of the new hierarchical libraries that are also supplied with ghc-6.4 and Hugs. Main bugfixes: * Resolved configuration bugs when using ghc-6.2 and ghc-6.4 with hmake. * Build failures associated with gcc-3.3 and upward have been fixed. Main feature updates: * Supplied with these standard library packages: base, parsec, haskell-src, QuickCheck, HaXml, HUnit, Cabal * FFI: foreign import "dynamic" is now supported, and C header-files named in an import are now respected. * cpphs: The compiler and hmake now use cpphs rather than your C compiler for preprocessing. This removes problems with string gaps, primes in identifiers, and so on. * Source now supplied with a small test suite to help verify whether the compiler works on new platforms. This release of nhc98 has been tested with the following machines and build compilers: ix86-Linux (Slackware 10 and RedHat 7.2 built with ghc-5, ghc-6, hbc, gcc-2.95, gcc-3.3, nhc98) ix86-Cygwin (Windows 2000 built with gcc-3.3, ghc-6) sparc-solaris2 (SunOS 5.9 built with ghc-6, gcc-2.95, nhc98) powerpc-Darwin7 (MacOS X 10.3 using ghc-6, gcc-2.95, gcc-3.3) Credits: Malcolm Wallace (release manager) Ian Lynagh (gcc-3.3 bugfixes, hmake-config add-dyn) Wolfgang Thaller (MacOS gcc-3.3 bugfixes) Simon Marlow (ghc configuration fixes) Sven Panne (warning police, hbc build) numerous library authors, distribution packagers, and bug reporters.
