Re: [Haskell] space behaviour of lazy recursive lists

Hmm, not sure exactly what Hugs is measuring here. I suspect this is a measure of total allocation during program execution rather than maximimum memory in use at any time during execution. So you'd expect to see this kind of thing anyway. As it happens, I think both heap and stack requirement will be proportional to the first arg of nth for the reasons I indicated earlier. But I think the version using zipWith' will execute in constant space (but this doesn't mean constant cell allocation, you'll probably still see <some large number> of cells used). space behaviour of lazy recursive lists
by Axel Jantsch 30 Jan '05

30 Jan '05

Hi, How can I get constant space behaviour for lazy, recursive streams? Consider: > gibs = 1 : 1 : (zipWith f gibs (tail gibs)) > where f x y = min (x + y) 10 This is derived from the fibs text book example, modified to bound the memory requirement for each list element. Evaluating gibs should require constant amount of memory, since the computed parts of the list are not needed any more and can be reclaimed. However, hugs says: Main> nth 100 fibs 10 (2818 reductions, 3730 cells, 1 garbage collection) Main> nth 200 fibs 10 (5618 reductions, 7430 cells, 1 garbage collection) which suggests linear space behaviour. Also, ghc shows the same behaviour with a linearly growing stack size as shown by the profiler (+RTS -hc -xt) and sooner or later the program runs out of memory with a stack overflow. It seems the entire list up to the last evaluated element is stored. Since I want to use lazy streams to simulate process networks, I want to run the simulation arbitrarily long without *ever* running out of memory. So my question is, how can I process recursive, lazy streams in constant space? Or, in other words, how can I force the garbage collector to reclaim the memory of the head of the list after I have processed it, since I will never ever reference it again? Tracing Haskell programs
by Srinivas Nedunuri 28 Jan '05

28 Jan '05

hello, are there any Windows or non-pltform specific tracers available for Haskell/HUGS? I tried HOOD but it doesnt work on programs that don't terminate :-( and Hat only runs on Unix systems plus it seems to require installing 4 or 5 other utilities... It doesn't *seem* like it ought to be difficult for the HUGS interpreter to dump out a simple trace as it goes along, even better logging only specific spy points, ala Prolog, so I am quite surprised to find there isn't any such facility in HUGS itself cheers

(Moved to Haskell list because this is now a suggestion for the language) I do a lot of this soft of thing. foo {bar = fn $ bar foo ,baz = fn2 $ baz foo } It would be much nicer if this syntax did the equivalent: foo {bar \= fn ,baz \= fn2 } -Alex- On Thu, 27 Jan 2005, Henning Thielemann wrote: > > On Thu, 27 Jan 2005, S. CFP: AAMAS-2005 INDUSTRY TRACK
by Matthias Klusch 28 Jan '05

28 Jan '05

++ Apologies for multiple copies due to cross posting ++ Call for Papers of AgentLink-3 supported ----------------------------------------------------- AAMAS-2005 INDUSTRY TRACK Utrecht, the Netherlands July 25-29 2005 http://www.aamas2005.nl/ ----------------------------------------------------- Submission open now -- Deadline: 28 February 2005 http://www.aamas2005.nl/industry_track_submissions.php INTRODUCTION The International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (AAMAS) is the leading international conference in the theory and practice of software agents. The conference attracts delegates from many different backgrounds; from those developing agent-based software products and services to those working in the theoretical foundations of the discipline. The AAMAS-05 conference will be held in July 2005 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and will, for the first time, feature a track specifically intended for industrial participants: the AAMAS Industry Track. The industry track is being organised in cooperation with AgentLink, Europe's IST-funded coordination activity for autonomous agents and multi-agent systems (see http://www.agentlink.org/) WHAT IS THE INDUSTRY TRACK? The AAMAS industry track is a special track at the AAMAS conference that will run in parallel to the regular AAMAS scientific track. It will feature presentations and demonstrations from industrial participants, giving them an opportunity to showcase the state of the art in technology and industrial application of autonomous agents and multi-agent systems to AAMAS delegates and to publish associated papers in a high quality, formal proceedings. The industry track aims to foster mutually beneficial links between those engaged in foundational scientific research and those working to make autonomous agents and multi-agent systems a commercial reality. This enables industrially-based software agent developers and practitioners to participate in AAMAS in a meaningful way and to present their technology and applications to both their peers and the associated scientific community. HOW WILL THE TRACK BE REFEREED? Whereas in the regular conference track the overriding refereeing criterion is clearly scientific excellence, the industry track focuses primarily on the industrial relevance and technological significance of the contribution. Preference will be given to mature work demonstrating concrete industrial/commercial results and business value. Examples of an "ideal" paper might include: (i) a presentation of a particular kind of commercially available software agent technology, together with experience of how this was applied in a field-tested system; or (ii) a report on a field-tested agent-based system. We explicitly discourage the submission of purely speculative papers, proposals, and plans for future work/potential applications. Academic participation in the industry track is acceptable, but please note that we strongly discourage the submission of: (i) papers that merely appeal to potential applications, without demonstrating that they have been meaningfully applied; (ii) academic papers that work with highly abstracted versions of potential applications; or (iii) academic papers that describe software agent systems/platforms without either a real industrial link or genuine application. In general, if you believe that your paper makes a scientific contribution, you should think about submitting to the regular scientific track; whereas, if your paper is an overview of an agent technology, a "practical experience" paper, or similar, then you should probably submit to the industry track. HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE? The industry track invites developers, practitioners, and industrial researchers to submit high quality papers on agent technology and its applications. See the conference web site for paper formatting and submission instructions. Accepted contributions will be formally published in the "Proceedings of the Industry Track of AAMAS-05" and will be distributed at the conference along with the AAMAS-05 main conference proceedings. Selected publications will be encouraged to present their applications in the AgentLink newsletter. The contributions will influence the AgentLink Roadmap to be published in 2005. Note that the Industry Track is part of the AAMAS conference - there is no separate registration for the Industry Track. ICEIS'2005- First International Workshop on Protection by Adaptation PBA'2005
by KOUADRI MOSTEFAOUI Ghita 27 Jan '05

27 Jan '05

CALL FOR PAPERS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First International Workshop on Protection by Adaptation (PBA 2005) May 24, 2005, Miami, USA http://www.iceis.org/workshops/pba/pba2005-cfp.html In conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS 2005) http://www.iceis.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scope and Topics ================ For most people, the term security refers to cryptographic algorithms, biometric authentication techniques, passwords, etc. Beyond these intuitive notions, security is rather a very broad topic and may be viewed from a variety of other perspectives, including new access control models, software architectures for security systems, and security policies specifications. Pervasive environments are the prime field for applying security due to the high frequency of attacks and incompatibilities detected in these types of environments. This situation results from the distributed nature of pervasive environments, mobility of users and devices, services heterogeneity and the different capabilities of devices used to access these services. The aim of this workshop is to point the research community to better consider context-based security as a new trend that may face future more subtle security attacks. We believe that the force of a good security system should not rely only on the force of security protocols but also on the way it copes with new and completely unpredictable situations or at least learn from new situations and updates its behavior accordingly. This goal can be reached by making future security solutions freely adaptive. We look for original submissions on the following topics (but not limited to): + Security in pervasive computing + Dynamic security policies + Context-based access control + Context in security + Agile encryption + AI in security + Adaptive security solutions + Middleware for context-based security systems + Conflicting norms issues in security policies + Flexible security architectures for pervasive applications + Security contexts discovery, retrieval, representation and modeling + Modeling users security profiles + Metrics for evaluating pervasive computing security infrastructures + Testing of adaptive security systems + Software architectures for adaptive security (design patterns, etc) + Adaptive security levels in heterogeneous environments + Enforcing applications security semantics + Metrics for predicting security threats Submission of papers ==================== Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for oral presentation in any of the areas listed above. Only full papers in English will be accepted, and the length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages (5000 words). build an interpreter on top of GHCi?
by WANG Meng 27 Jan '05

27 Jan '05

Hi All, Does anybody has the experience to built an interpreter on top of GHCi? What I want is to defined a my own interpreter as a Haskell module and load it into GHCi. So this new interpreter will be running on top of GHCi which accepts syntax extension of Haskell. For example: Prelude> :l myInter Prelude> myInter> new language source Prelude> myInter> ... Prelude> myInter> exit Prelude> In another word, I want to have a read-eval-print-loop running on GHCi. Does anybody know how to do that? -W-M- @ @ | \_/

CFP: ProMAS@ AAMAS 2005
by Prof. Dr. Juergen Dix 26 Jan '05

26 Jan '05

*********Sorry for multiple postings*********** Call for Papers ================= Third international Workshop on Programming Multi-Agent Systems (ProMAS'05) <http://www.cs.uu.nl/ProMAS/> ProMAS'05 is a satellite workshop at AAMAS 2005 Utrecht University, The Netherlands <http://www.aamas2005.nl/> Even though the contributions of the multi-agent systems (MAS) community can make a significant impact in the development of open distributed systems, the techniques resulting from such contributions will only be widely adopted when suitable programming languages and tools are available. Furthermore, such languages and tools must incorporate those techniques in a principled but practical way, so as to support the ever more complex task of professional programmers, in particular when the systems have to operate in dynamic environments. The ProMAS workshop series aims to address the practical programming issues related to developing and deploying multi-agent systems. In particular, ProMAS aims to address how multi-agent systems designs or specifications can be effectively implemented. In its two previous editions, ProMAS constituted an invaluable occasion bringing together leading researchers from both academia and industry to discuss issues on the design of programming languages and tools for multi-agent systems. In particular, the workshop promotes the discussion and exchange of ideas concerning the techniques, concepts, requirements, and principles that are important for multi-agent programming technology. We encourage the submission of proposals for programming languages and tools that provide specific programming constructs to facilitate the implementation of the essential concepts used in multi-agent system analysis and specifications (e.g., mental attitudes, distribution, and social interaction). We also welcome submissions describing significant multi-agent applications, as well as agent programming tools that allow the integration of agents with legacy systems. Further, we are particularly interested in approaches or applications that show clearly the added-value of multi-agent programming, and explain why and how this technology should be adopted by designers and programmers both in academia and industry. Specific topics for this workshop include, but are not limited to: - Programming Languages for multi-agent systems - Extensions of traditional languages for multi-agent programming - Theoretical and practical aspects of multi-agent programming - Computational complexity of MAS - Semantics for multi-agent programming languages - High-level executable multi-agent specification languages - Algorithms, techniques, or protocols for multi-agent issues (e.g., coordination, cooperation, negotiation) - Agent communication issues in multi-agent programming - Implementation of social and organisational aspects of MAS - Formal methods for specification and verification of MAS - Verification tools for implementations of MAS - Agent development tools and platforms - Generic tools and infrastructures for multi-agent programming - Interoperability and standards for MAS - Programming mobile agents - Safety and security for mobile MAS deployment - Fault tolerance and load balancing for mobile MAS - Application areas for multi-agent programming languages - Applications using legacy systems - Programming MAS for Grid-based applications - Programming MAS for the Semantic Web - Deployed (industrial-strength) MAS - Benchmarks and testbeds for comparing MAS languages and tools Important Dates: ---------------- Paper submission deadline: 14th of March, 2005 Notifications of acceptance/rejection: 18th of April, 2005 Camera-ready copies due: 15th of May, 2005 Workshop Date: 25th or 26th of July, 2005 (TBA) Submission Details: ------------------- Authors should submit their paper by attaching it to an email to Jürgen Dix (dix(a)tu-clausthal.de) The email should also contain paper title, author name(s), affiliation(s), contact information of the main author, and a few keywords describing the topic (eg. from the list above). Papers should be formatted using Springer LNCS style (http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html) and have a maximum of 15 pages. Accepted papers will be published as a technical report and distributed among participants during the workshop. As it was the case for ProMAS'03 and ProMas'04, we are planning to publish extended versions of the accepted papers as a volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series by Springer-Verlag.
