CfC: GPCE'05 - Generative Programming and Component Engineering
by Eelco Visser 06 Jan '05

06 Jan '05

FIRST CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4th International Conference on Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE'05) Sep 29 - Oct 1, 2005, Tallinn (Estonia) http://www.gpce.org/05 Sponsored by ACM SIGPLAN, in cooperation with ACM SIGSOFT co-located with ICFP'05 and TFP'05 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Consult http://www.gpce.org/05 for UP-TO-DATE and DETAILED information AVAILABLE: Calls for WORKSHOP and TUTORIAL PROPOSALS FORTHCOMING: Calls for papers and demonstrations (by mid January) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES * Feb 25, 2005: Submission of workshop and tutorial proposals * Mar 18, 2005: Notification for workshop and tutorial proposals * Apr 10, 2005: Submission of abstracts (only for papers) * Apr 15, 2005: Submission of papers and demos * May 30, 2005: Notification for papers and demos * Sep 27-28, 2005: GPCE workshops and tutorials * Sep 29 - Oct 1, 2005: GPCE papers and demos ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOPE. Generative and component approaches have the potential to revolutionize software development in a similar way as automation and components revolutionized manufacturing. Generative Programming (developing programs that synthesize other programs), Component Engineering (raising the level of modularization and analysis in application design), and Domain-Specific Languages (elevating program specifications to compact domain-specific notations that are easier to write and maintain) are key technologies for automating program development. GPCE arose as a joint conference, merging the conference on Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering (GCSE) and the workshop on Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation (SAIG). The goal of GPCE is to provide a meeting place for researchers and practitioners interested in cutting edge approaches to software development. We aim to foster further cross-fertilization between the software engineering research community and the programming languages community, in addition to supporting the original research goals of both the GCSE and the SAIG communities. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TOPICS. GPCE seeks contributions both in software engineering and in programming languages related (but not limited) to: * Generative programming - Reuse, meta-programming, partial evaluation, multi-stage and multi-level languages, step-wise refinement - Semantics, type systems, symbolic computation, linking and explicit substitution, in-lining and macros, templates, program transformation - Runtime code generation, compilation, active libraries, synthesis from specifications, development methods, generation of non-code artifacts, formal methods, reflection * Generative techniques for - Product lines and architectures - Embedded systems - Model-driven architecture * Component-based software engineering - Reuse, distributed platforms, distributed systems, evolution, analysis and design patterns, development methods, formal methods * Integration of generative and component-based approaches * Domain engineering and domain analysis - Domain-specific languages (DSLs) including visual and UML-based DSLs * Separation of concerns - Aspect-oriented and feature-oriented programming, - Intentional programming and multi-dimensional separation of concerns * Industrial applications ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributions to GPCE should belong to the following categories: WORKSHOPS providing intensive collaborative environments, where generative and component technologists meet to discuss (and solve) challenging problems facing the field. TUTORIALS giving a deeper or broader insight than conventional lectures (they are expected to extend over a half or a full day). Tutorials can be on any theme from or related to the topics above: surveys, experience reports or specialized research topics. However, a tutorial is expected to attract a reasonable number of participants (at least 10). PAPERS reporting research results and/or experience related to the topics above (PC co-chairs can advise on appropriateness). We especially encouraged original high-quality reports on applications to real-world problems, relating ideas and concepts from several topics, or bridging the gap between theory and practice. DEMOS covering novel tools, techniques or ideas; work in progress; or proven techniques used in real world scenarios. Demos will be selected based on technical content, practical or academic relevance, and their feasibility w.r.t. the infrastructure locally available. Presentations must focus on the technical content (product marketing would be inappropriate). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ORGANIZATION General Chair * Eugenio Moggi (Genova University, Italy) Program Committee Chairs * Robert Glueck (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) * Michael Lowry (NASA, USA) Publicity Chair * Eelco Visser (Utrecht University, The Netherlands) Workshops and Tutorials Chairs * Jeff Gray (University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA) * Andrew Malton (Waterloo University, Canada) Local Arrangements Chair * Tarmo Uustalu (Institute of Cybernetics, Tallinn) ----------------------------------------------------------------------

(MArray b e m, IArray a e, Ix i) => a i e -> m (b i e) nice type, eh? :-) It means, basically, that thaw converts an immutable array type 'a' of elements 'e' into a mutable array type 'b', in monad 'm'. This works to convert between any pair of 'a' and 'b' array types as long as they have appropriate instances of IArray and MArray, respectively. The error above is telling you that there's no instance for 'MArray b FlatVector IO' - this is because you haven't specified the array type 'b' into which thaw should convert the array. The error message is a bit misleading; it's really an ambiguity rather than a missing instance (I don't know whether it could be reasonably improved, though). Easily fixed by adding an appropriate type signature, for example: let _ = v :: IOArray Int FlatVector after 'v <- thaw tmp' will do the trick. BTW, don't import Data.Array.Base, use Data.Array.MArray instead. Cheers, Simon

[ Our apologies for multiple copies. ] ====================================================================== Announcement and First Call for Papers 1st International Workshop on Methods and Tools for Coordinating Concurrent, Distributed and Mobile Systems (MTCoord 2005) April 23, 2005, Namur, Belgium Workshop affiliated to Coordination'2005, April 20 - 23 2005 ====================================================================== IMPORTANT DATES: o March 1, 2005: Abstract submission deadline. o March 8, 2005: Paper Submission deadline. o April 1, 2005: Notification of acceptance. o April 10, 2005: Final version. o April 23, 2005: Meeting Date. SCOPE Various classes of computational models, languages, and formalisms have emerged in the aim of providing high-level descriptions of concurrent, distributed, and mobile systems. Typical examples include so-called coordination languages and models (e.g. Gamma, Linda, Manifold, Reo, Klaim, Lime, ...), concurrent constraint languages (e.g. cc languages, Mozart, ...) and process algebras (e.g. CSP, CCS, pi-calculus, ...). These models are based on generative communication via a shared data space or on data communication through channels. In both cases, software components are typically conceived in isolation assuming that the required data will eventually be available. However, making a whole system out of these components and, in particular, ensuring that interactions occur properly is far from being obvious. The aim of the workshop is precisely to bring together researchers, working in different communities (coordination, constraints, process algebras), on methods and tools for the construction of concurrent, distributed and mobile systems. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include but are not limited to o Model checking techniques, in particular parallel, distributed and probabilistic ones o Design of high-level specifications, eg based on first-order, modal and temporal logics o Techniques for requirements capture and analysis o Theorem proving based methodologies o Compositional and refinement-based methodologies o Debugging techniques o Abstract interpretation o Program analysis and transformation o Simulation and testing o Formal methods for security o Tools environments and architectures o Applications and case studies, in particular in web services and biology SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers describing original work are solicited as contributions to MTCoord 2005. I try to thaw an array of unboxed arrays to the IO monad
by Andreas Marth 03 Jan '05

03 Jan '05

Hallo everybody! A few years ago I wrote a program wich contained (among much else) the following: >import IOExts (thawIOArray,freezeIOArray) -- had to be replaced, because ghc doesn't find it anymore >import Data.Array.Unboxed as UA (UArray,listArray) >import Data.Array.IArray as IA (Array,listArray) >main :: IO () >main = do let sL = [1,4,6,3,2,5] > dim = length sL > help :: [FlatVector] > help = [listFlatVector (1,s) [0|i<-[1..s]]|s<-sL] > tmp :: Vector FlatVector > tmp = listVector (1,dim) help > v <- thawIOArray tmp > -- lots of stuff > res <- freezeIOArray v > return () >type FlatVector = UArray Int Double >listFlatVector :: (Int,Int) -> [Double] -> FlatVector >listFlatVector = UA.listArray >type Vector a = Array Int a >listVector :: (Int,Int) -> [a] -> Vector a >listVector = IA.listArray which worked. Now GHC doesn't know IOExts anymore and even doesn't know "thawIOArray" and "freezeIOArray". (At least I could not find it anymore.) So I tried the following: >import Data.Array.Base (thaw,freeze) >import Data.Array.Unboxed as UA (UArray,listArray) >import Data.Array.IArray as IA (Array,listArray) >main :: IO () >main = do let sL = [1,4,6,3,2,5] > dim = length sL > help :: [FlatVector] > help = [listFlatVector (1,s) [0|i<-[1..s]]|s<-sL] > tmp :: Vector FlatVector > tmp = listVector (1,dim) help > v <- thaw tmp > -- lots of stuff >-- res <- freeze v > return () >type FlatVector = UArray Int Double >listFlatVector :: (Int,Int) -> [Double] -> FlatVector >listFlatVector = UA.listArray >type Vector a = Array Int a >listVector :: (Int,Int) -> [a] -> Vector a >listVector = IA.listArray Which yields the following error in Hugs: ERROR "E:\Inf-Sys\NormalerCode\mini-thaw.hs":6 - Cannot justify constraints in explicitly typed binding *** Expression : main *** Type : IO () *** Given context : () *** Constraints : MArray a (UArray Int Double) IO And this one in GHC: mini-thaw.hs:12: No instance for (Data.Array.Base.MArray b FlatVector IO) arising from use of `thaw' at mini-thaw.hs:12 In a 'do' expression: v <- thaw tmp In the definition of `main': main = do let sL = [1, 4, 6, 3, 2, 5] dim = length sL help :: [FlatVector] help = [... | s <- ...] tmp :: Vector FlatVector tmp = listVector (1, dim) help v <- thaw tmp return () I'm a bit disturbed because I could not find a way to solve this. And to make an Array of Arrays (the inner ones unboxed if possible*) mutable should not be thatch a big problem. Any solutions available? I would be glad for any hint. Thanks, Andreas * At that time only GHC provided unboxed Arrays.

Internships and Post-doctoral Positions at MSR Cambridge
by Don Syme 02 Jan '05

02 Jan '05

Dear Haskell-list On behalf of Microsoft Research, Cambridge, I would like to announce that applications for intern positions at our lab for 2005 are now being accepted. Our lab has a number of groups, but of particular interest may be the Programming Principles and Tools group (http://research.microsoft.com/ppt/) This group is keenly interested in functional programming, language theory, runtime systems and type systems amongst other things and includes famous Haskellers such as Simon Peyton-Jones and Simon Marlow. Specific interests of other researchers are detailed on their home pages, and in general you should consider discussing potential projects with a specific researcher soon after applying. Cambridge is a great place to work, and internships normally last 12 weeks and most commonly occur over the summer. Applicants should be graduate students on PhD programs. For summer 2005 Internships, the deadline for complete applications is 28th February 2005, and references have to be received by this date. The admission process is quite competitive, and we encourage applications in good time before the deadline. We aim to notify candidates of the outcome of their applications by the end of April 2005. Full details and application forms can be found at the following link: http://research.microsoft.com/aboutmsr/jobs/internships/cambridge.aspx In addition, we are always open to applications for a smaller number of longer-term post-doctoral positions. Full details can be found at http://research.microsoft.com/aboutmsr/jobs/cambridgepostdoc.aspx Don Syme MSR Cambridge http://research.microsoft.com/aboutmsr/labs/cambridge/default.aspx

WRS05: Second Call For Papers
by Roberto Di Cosmo 28 Dec '04

28 Dec '04

********************************************************************** 5th Int'l Workshop on Reduction Strategies in Rewriting and Programming WRS'05 Nara, Japan, April 22nd, 2005 Second Call For Submissions ********************************************************************** Reduction strategies in rewriting and programming have attracted an increasing attention within the last years. New types of reduction strategies have been invented and investigated, and new results on rewriting / computation under particular strategies have been obtained. Research in this field ranges from primarily theoretical questions about reduction strategies to very practical application and implementation issues. The need for a deeper understanding of reduction strategies in rewriting and programming, both in theory and practice, is obvious, since they bridge the gap between unrestricted general rewriting (computation) and (more deterministic) rewriting with particular strategies (programming). Moreover, reduction strategies provide a natural way to go from operational principles (e.g., graph and term rewriting, narrowing, lambda-calculus) and semantics (e.g., normalization, computation of values, infinitary normalization, head-normalization) to implementations of programming languages. Therefore any progress in this area is likely to be of interest not only to the rewriting community, but also to neighbouring fields like functional programming, functional-logic programming, and termination proofs of algorithms. The workshop wants to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new ideas and results, recent developments, new research directions, as well as of surveys on existing knowledge in this area. Furthermore we aim at fostering interaction and exchange between researchers and students actively working on such topics. Information on the previous, and forthcoming, WRS editions is available from the WRS permanent homepage. TOPICS Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to: * theoretical foundations for the definition and semantic description of reduction strategies * strategies in different frameworks (term rewriting, graph rewriting, infinitary rewriting, lambda calculi, higher order rewriting and explicit substitutions, conditional rewriting, rewriting with built-ins, narrowing, constraint solving, etc.) and their application in (equational, functional, functional-logic) programming (languages) * properties of reduction strategies / computations under strategies (e.g., completeness, computability, decidability, complexity, optimality, (hyper-)normalization, cofinality, fairness, perpetuality, context-freeness, neededness, laziness, eagerness, strictness) * interrelations, combinations and applications of reduction under different strategies (e.g., equivalence conditions for fundamental properties like termination and confluence, applications in modularity analysis, connections between strategies of different frameworks, etc.) * program analysis and other semantics-based optimization techniques dealing with reduction strategies * rewrite systems / tools / implementations with flexible / programmable strategies as essential concept / ingredient * specification of reduction strategies in (real) languages * data structures and implementation techniques for reduction strategies SUBMISSIONS We solicit papers on all aspects of reduction strategies in rewriting and programming. Submissions should describe unpublished work, except for survey papers which are explicitly welcome, too. Submissions should not exceed 10 pages (however, survey papers may be longer). Please, send a message containing the title, authors, and abstract of your submission before January 21, 2005 to the PC co-chairs at wrs05(a)pps.jussieu.fr The full version of your submission should be sent in postscript or PDF format before January 31, 2005. Submissions should include the title, authors' names, affiliations, addresses, and e-mail. Selection of papers by the PC will be based on originality, significance, and correctness. Final versions will be due by March 18, 2005. PUBLICATION Accepted papers will be included in the preliminary workshop proceedings that will be available at the workshop. Selected papers will be published in the Electronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science (ENTCS) series of Elsevier.
