An information agent is a computational software entity that has access to one or multiple, heterogeneous and distributed information sources, pro-actively searches for and maintains relevant information on behalf of its human users or other agents preferably just-in-time. In other words, it is managing and overcoming the difficulties associated with information overload in the open and exponentially growing Internet and Web. One key challenge of developing advanced information systems is to balance the autonomy of networked data and knowledge sources with the potential payoff of leveraging them by the appropriate use of intelligent information agents. Therefore, the special focus of this workshop series is on the perspectives, design, and implementation of intelligent information agents which are able to collaborate in open, networked data and information environments for and providing added value to a variety of applications in different domains. Keeping with its tradition all topics in the research area of intelligent and collaborating information agents are covered by the CIA 2004 workshop. Topics are (but not limited to) * Systems and Applications of Information Agents - Architectures of information agents. - Prototypes and fielded systems of information agents. - Recommender systems; collaborative cases. - Issues of programming information agents. * Advanced Theories of Collaboration - Social filtering, cooperative search, group forming, negotiation, etc. - Cooperation in real-time and open environments. - Self-organising information agent systems. - Capability-based mediation between information agents. - Collaboration in peer-to-peer networks. * Agent-Based Knowledge Discovery - Knowledge discovery by (systems of) information agents; collaborative cases. - Agent-based distributed data mining. - Distributed information retrieval and Web mining. * Information Agents for the Semantic Web - Agent-based service discovery and composition. - Agent-based service matchmaking and brokering in the Semantic Web. - Agent-based distributed ontology learning. * Mobile Information Agents - Mobile information agents for distributed information retrieval. - Engineering mobile information agents. - Cooperative mobile information agents. * Information Agents for Ubiquitous Computing Environments - Information agents for pervasive computing: Visions, applications, surveys; collaborative cases. * Rational Information Agents for E-Business - Models of economic rationality and trust. - Issues of privacy of communication, data security, and jurisdiction for agent-mediated trading. - Coalition and team formation algorithms. * Intelligent Interfaces for Information Agents - Human-agent interaction for (systems of) information agents. - Life-like characters and avatars. - Information agents for/applied to digital cities. - Advanced, personalized 3-d visualizations of information spaces. - Agent-based Web usage mining - Personalisation; collaborative cases. * Adaptive Information Agents - Adaptive information retrieval; collaborative cases. - Reasoning with imperfect information: collaborative cases. - Multi-strategy and meta-learning for cooperative information agents. Announce: wxHaskell 0.7
by Daan Leijen 02 Apr '04

02 Apr '04

Announcement: wxHaskell version 0.7 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net> This new release contains bug fixes, a few new widget attributes, and has an improved build system for MacOS X and Linux. Binary installers are provided for MacOS X, Linux (RPM), and Windows. The webpage has some nice screenshots now of larger applications that are written with wxHaskell, and a sample of wxHaskell with HOpenGL. There is also a Wiki site for wxHaskell now. All the best, Daan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wxHaskell is a portable GUI library for Haskell. The goal of the project is to provide an industrial strength portable GUI library, but without the burden of developing (and maintaining) one ourselves. wxHaskell is therefore build on top of wxWidgets -- a comprehensive C++ library that is portable across all major GUI platforms; including GTK, Windows, X11, and MacOS X. Furthermore, it is a mature library (in development since 1992) that supports a wide range of widgets with native look-and-feel, and it has a very active community (ranked among the top 25 most active projects on sourceforge). Since most of the interface is automatically generated from the wxEiffel binding, the current release of wxHaskell already supports about 75% of the wxWindows functionality -- about 2900 methods in 500 classes with 1400 constant definitions. wxHaskell has been build with GHC 6.x on Windows, MacOS X and Unix systems with GTK. A binary distribution is available for Windows, Linux (RPM) and MacOS X. And even if you don't intend to write GUI's yourself, it will be fun to check out the screenshots at <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net>. All the best, Daan Leijen.

Dynamically loading wxhaskell?
by dpt＠lotus.bostoncoop.net 01 Apr '04

01 Apr '04

Has anyone succeeded in getting wxhaskell to work under ghci on Linux? On my system, I get an error message Loading package unix ... ghc-6.2: can't load .so/.DLL for: dl (libdl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) This sounds like it has nothing to do with wxhaskell, but is a GHC problem. Any pointers? Thanks, Dylan

Announcing Pan# 1.0
by John Peterson 01 Apr '04

01 Apr '04

Announcing Pan# 1.0 Pan# is a new front end for Conal Elliott's Pan system. Pan# is a stand-alone system that displays interactive functional images expressed in a slightly augmented Haskell subset. Pan# is ideal for demonstrating the core principles of functional programming in an interesting and creative manner. Features of this release include: * All examples from Conal's Fun of Programming chapter * Many examples stolen from Jerzy Karczmarczuk's functional textures work * Full type checking * New user interface controls (random numbers, Haskore timing tracks) * More Haskell features * Movie making capabilities * Improved viewer * Simplified syntax for monadic code Pan# runs on Windows and uses the .NET system for dynamic compilation. It has not yet been ported to Linux or Macs but if you're familiar with the open source .NET systems we would be glad to help someone move Pan# to other operating systems. Pan# is easy to install and use. It has been tested with high school students and has proven to be an effective vehicle for introducing novices to the basics of computer programming without getting wrapped up in the endless details of visual Basic or other "industrial strength" computer languages. Because functional programming is very close to mathematics, Pan# does not need to introduce unfamiliar computational paradigms to students. We are also investigating the use of Pan# as an instructional tool for high school mathematics - some examples of this are included in the distribution. You can download Pan# at http://haskell.org/edsl/pansharp.html Thanks to Microsoft Research for supporting this project. John Peterson, Yale Haskell Group peterson-john(a)cs.yale.edu

ANNOUNCE: HaskellDB 0.7
by Bjorn Bringert 31 Mar '04

31 Mar '04

We are pleased to announce the third alpha release of our "remake" of HaskellDB, version 0.7. HaskellDB is available for download from http://haskelldb.sourceforge.net/ HaskellDB is a Haskell library for expressing database queries and operations in a type safe and declarative way. HaskellDB compiles a relational algebra-like syntax into SQL, submits the operations to the database for processing, and returns the results as ordinary Haskell values. The original version of HaskellDB was written by Daan Leijen and is available at http://www.haskell.org/haskellDB/. The implementation is based on his paper which can be found at: http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/daan/download/papers/dsec.ps New in HaskellDB 0.7: - Added functions for creating and dropping tables and databases. Too be improved in future releases. - Support for wxHaskell with GHC. - Untyped support for SQLite, thanks to a patch from Jeremy Shaw. - Overloaded (!) can be used for both (!) and (!.). - Compiling for Hugs does not require GHC. - Added function for converting from nullable types. Suggested by Shae Erisson. - Added case construct. - A GenericConnect is now available. Uses similar syntax to DBDirect. - Backend interface changed to make function types backend independent. - Queries now return records instead of backend specific types. NOTE: Due to changes in DbDirect, any files generated using the old version of HaskellDB may have to be regenerated. The developers can be reached at haskelldb-users(a)lists.sourceforge.net or on #haskelldb at irc.freenode.net. / The HaskellDB development team

Not recently. But I'd be very surprised if things have changed: the cache benefits need to be pretty big to outweigh the slowdown caused by the extra indirection when entering a closure.
