Announce: wxhaskell 0.5
by Daan Leijen 12 Feb '04

12 Feb '04

Announcement: wxHaskell version 0.5 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net> This is patch-level release against ghc 6.2, and I also added support for Html window events. All the best, Daan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wxHaskell is a portable GUI library for Haskell. The goal of the project is to provide an industrial strength portable GUI library, but without the burden of developing (and maintaining) one ourselves. wxHaskell is therefore build on top of wxWindows -- a comprehensive C++ library that is portable across all major GUI platforms; including GTK, Windows, X11, and MacOS X. Furthermore, it is a mature library (in development since 1992) that supports a wide range of widgets with native look-and-feel, and it has a very active community (ranked among the top 25 most active projects on sourceforge). Since most of the interface is automatically generated from the wxEiffel binding, the current release of wxHaskell already supports about 75% of the wxWindows functionality -- 2878 methods in 513 classes with 1347 constant definitions. wxHaskell has been build with GHC 6.x on Windows, MacOS X and Unix systems with GTK. A binary distribution is available for Windows and MacOS X. And even if you don't intend to write GUI's yourself, it will be fun to check out the screenshots at <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net>. All the best, Daan Leijen.

[Haskell] Second CFP: GPCE'04 -- Generative Programming and Component Engineering
by Eelco Visser 11 Feb '04

11 Feb '04

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Third International Conference on Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE'04) Vancouver, October 24-28, 2004 co-located with OOPSLA 2004 and ISMM 2004 http://gpce04.gpce.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ Important Dates ------------------------------------ * Pre-submission: March 12, 2004 * Submission: March 19, 2004 ------------------------------------ Scope ------------------------------------ Generative and component approaches have the potential to revolutionize software development in a similar way as automation and components revolutionized manufacturing. Generative Programming (developing programs that synthesize other programs), Component Engineering (raising the level of modularization and analysis in application design), and Domain-Specific Languages (elevating program specifications to compact domain-specific notations that are easier to write and maintain) are key technologies for automating program development. GPCE arose as a joint conference, merging the prior conference on Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering (GCSE) and the Workshop on Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation (SAIG). The goal of GPCE is to provide a meeting place for researchers and practitioners interested in cutting edge approaches to software development. We aim to foster further cross-fertilization between the software engineering research community on the one hand, and the programming languages community on the other, in addition to supporting the original research goals of both the GCSE and the SAIG communities. We seek papers both in software engineering and in programming languages, and especially those that bridge the gap and are accessible to both communities at the same time. ------------------------------------ Topics of Interest ------------------------------------ The conference solicits submissions related (but not limited) to: * Generative programming o Reuse, meta-programming, partial evaluation, multi-stage and multi-level languages, step-wise refinement o Semantics, type systems, symbolic computation, linking and explicit substitution, in-lining and macros, templates, program transformation o Runtime code generation, compilation, active libraries, synthesis from specifications, development methods, generation of non-code artifacts, formal methods, reflection * Generative techniques for o Product lines and architectures o Embedded systems o Model-driven architecture * Component-based software engineering o Reuse, distributed platforms, distributed systems, evolution, analysis and design patterns, development methods, formal methods * Integration of generative and component-based approaches * Domain engineering and domain analysis o Domain-specific languages (DSLs) including visual and UML-based DSLs * Separation of concerns o Aspect-oriented programming, feature-oriented programming, o Intentional programming, and multi-dimensional separation of concerns * Industrial applications Reports on applications of these techniques to real-world problems are especially encouraged, as are submissions that relate ideas and concepts from several of these topics, or bridge the gap between theory and practice. The program committee is happy to advise on the appropriateness of a particular subject. ------------------------------------ Paper Submission ------------------------------------ Authors are invited to submit a title and abstract by March 12, 2004, and a full paper by March 19, 2004. These deadlines are firm. Simultaneous submission to other venues and submission of previously published material are not allowed. Electronic submission will be required, except by special arrangement with the program chairs. Authors will be notified of acceptance by May 17, 2004. Final versions of accepted papers must be submitted by July 25, 2004. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/index.html. Submissions must be in PDF, must conform to the LNCS style, and be no longer than 15 pages. For the formatting details see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. ------------------------------------ Other Contributions ------------------------------------ Work related to generative programming and component engineering can also be presented in other forms than papers. GPCE has separate days for tutorials and workshops. During the conference there are sessions for tool demonstrations and practitioner reports. If you want to organize a workshop, present a tutorial, or demonstration, see the information on the conference website for details about format and submission. Contact the relevant chair for more information. ------------------------------------ Important Dates ------------------------------------ Technical papers * Pre-submission: March 12, 2004 * Submission: March 19, 2004 * Notification: May 17, 2004 * Final version: July 25, 2004 Submissions of proposals * Workshops: March 19, 2004 * Practitioners: April 30, 2004 * Tutorials: April 30, 2004 * Demonstrations: July 2, 2004 Conference * Tutorials: October 24, 2004 * Workshops: October 25, 2004 * Papers: October 26-28, 2004 ------------------------------------ Organization ------------------------------------ General chair * Tim Sheard (OGI School of Science & Engineering at OHSU) Program committee chairs * Gabor Karsai (Vanderbilt University) * Eelco Visser (Utrecht University) Program committee * Uwe Assmann (Linkopings Universitet) * Don Batory (University of Texas) * Jan Bosch (Universiteit Groningen) * Jean Bezivin (Universit de Nantes) * Jim Cordy (Queen's University) * Krzysztof Czarnecki (University of Waterloo) * Mathew Flatt (University of Utah) * Robert Glck (University of Copenhagen) * George Heineman (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) * Michael Leuschel (University of Southampton) * Karl Lieberherr (Northeastern University) * Simon Peyton Jones (Microsoft Research) * Douglas R. Ann: Pancito 2.2
by andrew cooke 10 Feb '04

10 Feb '04

Hi, There's a new version (2.2) of Pancito (a functional images toolkit) available at http://www.acooke.org/jara/pancito - it extends 2.1 with useful output options (a progress meter and the possibility to preview a small area of an image) and better structured code (points are now a typeclass, allowing now kinds of coordinates to be added more easily, for example). I hope to make public a gallery of images generated using the package within the next week or so (which will probably be announced along with a package for generating web pages from templates). ANNOUNCE: HsUnix 1.0.1 - Haskell for Unix Shell Scripting
by Volker Wysk 10 Feb '04

10 Feb '04

I'm pleased to announce the first release of the HsUnix library. It enables you to do things easily in Haskell which are typically done by the shell. Thus Haskell can be used to write shell scripts. Features -------- Command Line Arguments Parser HsUnix has facilities for managing command line arguments, which are (hopefully) easier to use than the GHC library GetOpt. Command line arguments are described in lists of properties. HsUnix builds on top of GetOpt, but hides it completely. Command line arguments handling has been added because GetOpt was found to be too cumbersome. Shell Like Commands HsUnix has a growing list of front end functions for shell like programming, such as chmod or mkdir. They wrap calls to external programs, system calls or standard Haskell functions. Analyzing Paths Dealing with paths is not as trivial as it sounds. Take, for example ../for///./../bar/. HsUnix has taken care of it thoroughly and provides functions such as splitting a path into (real) path components, or syntactically normalising paths. Dealing with Processes and Calling External Programs There are corresponding functions in the GHC Posix library, but the ones here are simpler. Redirecting Input and Output HsUnix defines operators like ->- and ->>- which work just like redirection operators in shells. Building Pipes Reading the output of an external program, or piping the output of one program into the input of another, is almost as easy as in shells. HsUnix provides corresponding operators. Error Handling Error handling is one thing which is done much more thoroughly in HsUnix than in shells. Failed programs won't be silently ignored. Dynamic exceptions are used for error handling. Non zero exit codes are thrown as exceptions. Quoting of Strings and Building Commands for Shells Taking care of shell metacharacters usually isn't done right. HsUnix provides functions for doing it safely. Homepage -------- http://www.volker-wysk.de/hsunix -- Volker Wysk <post(a)volker-wysk.de> http://www.volker-wysk.de

vim syntax files for GHC-style .lhs, .hs + cpp
by dons＠cse.unsw.edu.au 09 Feb '04

09 Feb '04

Hey all, ------------------------------------------------------------- Vim syntax highlighting for GHC-style .lhs and .hs + cpp ------------------------------------------------------------- Rather than let this just sit on my hd, I'm making them available. ftp://ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/users/dons/vim/ These are vim syntax files for the tex-style (not the bird-feet style) literate Haskell used in much of GHC, and for normal Haskell with -cpp preprocessor sprinkles. The directories should go in your ~/.vim/ folder. There is also a preliminary outline of a vim indent file for .hs code. If you'd like to finish this off, then send me diff's please! The .lhs file still has a few minor buglets, so by making this stuff available I'm hoping someone has time to fix them. Cheers, Don
