ANN: hat-2.04, a Haskell Tracer

hat-2.04 -------- http://haskell.org/hat/ We are pleased to announce a new release of Hat, the Haskell Tracer. Hat is a very useful tool for understanding and debugging programs. Hat is compiler independent, and can be used on any Unix-like platform. It supports the full Haskell'98 language, plus hierarchical module namespaces, and several type system extensions, namely: multi-parameter type classes, functional dependencies, and existential quantification of datatype declarations. The main interactive trace browsers currently are hat-observe and hat-trail, but many more experimental browsers are included (see below). Particular features of note in this new release, hat-2.04, are: * Supports compilers from ghc-5.04.2 and nhc98-1.18 upwards, now including the entire ghc-6 series. As well as the usual Unix/Linux platforms, we believe it also works under MacOS X and Cygwin (but would value your feedback.) We recommend you use 'hmake' to manage compilation of your traced programs. * Support for a few more of the standard hierarchical library modules (although the tracing versions are still only a subset of the full list.) * Various improvements, such as recording full source positions in the trace rather than just start-positions, and recording do-notation, mean that visual linkage from the trace to your program is far more helpful. * A range of new (experimental) tracing tools: Interactive browsers: hat-anim, hat-explore, hat-detect Batch-mode tools: hat-cover, hat-nonterm, black-hat * Numerous small bug fixes. Problems with configure

Hello, Im trying to install hat in GNU/Linux, and i got this error when running ./configure: Configuring for hat... [ 2.01 ] -------- Looking for already-installed Haskell compilers: Looking for ghc... found 6.2.2 WARNING: hat-2.02 needs a version of ghc >= 5.04. Looking for nhc98... (not found) Looking for hmake... head: `-1' option is obsolete; use `-n 1' since this will be removed in the future found 3.08 ERROR: hat needs at least one of ghc or nhc98. The confusing part for me is that i already have ghc located in: /usr/bin/ghc, and apparently the binary is found according to the first message, nevertheless, it exist with that error. Any help appreciated, Regards,

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had a 'definitive' list of where it is possible to get a cycle in an ART. Has anyone looked at where it is theoretically possible to get a cycle and what code causes it? Or, if not, does anyone have a list simply from the experience of writing the SExp cycle detection code – I'm having a few problems deciphering exactly what it is looking for. Bug report: Bogus config error

Hi folks, Trying to build Hat on Windows 2000 with Cygwin and GHC 6.2.1: $ ./configure --prefix=/cygdrive/c/tools Configuring for hat... [ 2.01 ] -------- Looking for already-installed Haskell compilers: Looking for ghc... found 6.2.1 WARNING: hat-2.02 needs a version of ghc >= 5.04. Looking for nhc98... Strange error using hat-trail and hat-observe

I'm getting a very strange error when I run either of the main two hat utilities: dhcp2966:~/Documents/Work/SECD Machine tatd100$ hat-trail SECDmachine Fail: /tmp/hmakeconfig.1273: removeFile: failed (Bad file descriptor) I've been searching and searching for where either tool tries to delete anything, but can't find a thing. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Bob

Possible bug with left section expressions

Hello, I just checked out the latest Hat sources from the CVS. After successful compilation and installation, I think I have a bug at hand, in the treatment of left section expressions, e.g. (2+). A very simple program that generates the bug (let's call the file hattest.hs): generator = ("Hello " ++) . ("world!" ++) main = putStrLn (generator "") Here's what I get: formal:~/foo> hmake -hat hattest hat-trans hattest.hs Fail: mergePos 1:23-1:24 1:14-1:21 As I understand it, (1:23-1:24) is the first "++" and 1:14-1:21 is the string "Hello ". The left section is (correctly) converted to the application: (++) "Hello " but then possitions of the two subexpressions come the wrong way and mergePos complains. I know it can be fixed by writing the expression above instead of the left section, but (as this occurs in all Show instances several times) I think it is not an acceptable solution. How to generate .hx files?

Hi, I'm using hmake to compile my Haskell program to run with Hat. My program uses the HaXml library. When I run hmake it fails to compile my program, due to this error: Fail: /home/hofte/local//include/hat/Text/XML/HaXml/Xml2Haskell.hx: openFile: does not exist (No such file or directory) It seems that hmake can't find the .hx files for the HaXml package, because the package is not a standard Haskell package. My question is now, how can I generate .hx file for the HaXml package? Thanks in advance, -Tom

Build problems

When building hat, I get the error messages below. This seems to be due to #elif __GLASGOW_HASKELL__ >= 502 import Debug.Trace (trace) #else import IOExts (trace) #endif in compiler98/SysDeps.hs. Im using ghc 6.2 and I suppose the comparison with 502 fails. How to correct this properly? (The problem will reappear when ghc 6.4 will be released.) Despite these error messages the build continues and seems to succeed. Nonetheless I find the error message strange. Why does it search in the nhc98 libraries? problem. Installing hat with GHC version 6.2.1

Hi, I'm trying to install hat on with ghc 6.2.1. under linux. During the execution of the ./configure script, I'm getting this error message: Looking for already-installed Haskell compilers: Looking for ghc... found 6.2.1 WARNING: hat-2.02 needs a version of ghc >= 5.04. Looking for nhc98... (not found) Looking for hmake... found 3.08 ERROR: hat needs at least one of ghc or nhc98 Hmmm, strange. He founds ghc 6.2.1 and hat needs 5.04, but why is he complaining??
