Hi all, I am trying to port a library that I have developed using GHC and GHCi to Hugs. The problem is that it uses the FFI as specified in the GHC documentation. Hugs seems to understand the keywords "foreign import", but seems to give slightly different semantics to it. My question is: does anybody know what the status of the FFI is in the latest Hugs? Should I use the "primitive" keywords instead? Also, the GHC folks seem to have changed the libraries Foreign, Ptr, etc. and have made Addr obsolete. Also, they provide libraries like CForeign. specifying library locations to ./configure ?

Hi, I can report a sucessful build on mips-sgi-irix6.5 (if anyone's interested) My problem is about how to cope with a missing libreadline.a For some reason (don't ask me why), the system I work with does not have readline installed - and I'm not root! I have a working copy of libreadline.a locally and would like to use that (so that the lack of line editing and command history in hugs doesn't drive me crazy!). Is there anyway to tell the ./configure script to look for readline in a specific location, or can I hack the makefile afterwards, or can I tell the loader to search an extra location? Any advice much apreciated. I'm sure you know how irritating a minor thing like this can be. :-) Duncan

Restoring your win32 Hugs98 installations

Hi, attached is a little utility I cobbled together to help out someone that had gotten their Hugs98 install on Win32 in a bad state, and was having a hard time reverting it back into working order. (In particular, the search path was ill-formed, causing Hugs to exit before it could load the Prelude). The utility lets you wipe out the user-specific Hugs98 Registry :settings, which in effect reverts the Hugs98 settings back to the default ones. A stop-gap solution that is hopefully of use to others. hth --sigbjorn btw, if you don't have access to a C compiler to compile up the sources, let me know & I'll mail you a binary.

Polymorphic Trex fields

Hi! Hugs does not seem to support polymorphic fields for Trex records. What I want is to have types like: Rec ( id :: forall a . a -> a ) or Rec (bind :: (forall a b . M a -> (a -> M b) -> M b), return :: (forall a . a -> M a)) Is there a good reasong for not supporting this? (I suppose there is but I just want to make sure.) It would be great if this restriction could be lifted. Cheers, /Josef

toUpper Bug?

Section 9 of the Library says that ``Function toUpper converts a letter to the corresponding upper-case letter, leaving any other character unchanged. Any Unicode letter which has an upper case equivalent is changed'' I would therefore expect map toUpper na\239fve to give NA\207VE (hopefully I've got the right values for the characters I intend). Hugs gives: Prelude> toUpper (chr 239) '\239' So I guess it doesn't work in Hugs. But it does work in ghc: Char> toUpper (chr 239) '\207' Char> Maybe if this one is going to be fixed, toUpper could be put in the correct library as well? Hugs & Cygwin

Hello there. I am trying to install (compile the source of) Hugs-feb-2001 under Windows98, via Cygwin, but I got the message: mv: cannot move `hugs' to `/bin/#inst.7520#': No such file or directory make: *** [install_bin] Error 1 I tried to change the "--prefix" option in the ./configure step to a lot of diferent directories (rather than $HOME), but it didn't work. Succesfull compile of Hugs on Mac OS X

Hello, I write just to tell you that I succesfully compiled and got running Hugs on my Mac OS X system. I compiled the UNIX binaries following the short instructions and they worked like a charm with no problem. Just in case you don't know it works in Mac OS X as well. hi, i'm working with the Hugs source but i can't compile parser.c. Do I need to have/do something to make this compile. I'm using gcc. Thanks for any help you can give. Richard

ForeignObj Finalizer in Hugs

I want to use ForeignObj for large transient data, but Hugs ForeignObj implementation is quite mysterious... Three ForeignObj interfaces are described as such in exts/Foreign.hs. primitive makeForeignObj :: Addr{-x-} -> Addr{-free-} -> IO ForeignObj primitive writeForeignObj :: ForeignObj -> Addr -> IO () primitive eqForeignObj :: ForeignObj -> ForeignObj -> Bool The latter argument of makeForeignObj is a mystery. 1. I thought it is a pointer of function (with type of [void (*)(void *);] ?). foreign import "foo" "newFO" newFO :: IO Addr foreign import "foo" "delFO" delFO :: Addr -> IO () primitive unsafeCoerce "primUnsafeCoerce" :: a -> b newFO >>= (\fo -> makeForeignObj fo (unsafeCoerce delFO)) This code causes an unexpected signal (probably the implementation of Addr -> IO () is different from C form). 2. `foreign label' is valid? foreign import "foo" "newFO" newFO :: IO Addr foreign label "foo" "delFO" delFO :: Addr newFO >>= (\fo -> makeForeignObj fo delFO) No, it isn't. 3.
