XMonad crashes and I see the Slim prompt again. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? This bug occurs both with XMonad 0.9.2 and 0.10. OS: ArchLinux x86_64 Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". XMonad compiles fine. Please provide any additional information below. strange application crashes with gnome/xmonad

I'm mystified by a problem I'm having that only seems to appear when using xmonad with gnome, and I am hoping that someone here can help debug the issue. I'm running xmonad with gnome per the instructions here: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_Gnome#Setting_up_… specifically, I set up an xmonad.desktop file in my user's applications dir, and I created another file in xsessions that invokes the following xmonad.start: ---- xmonad.start: -------------------------------------------------------------- #!/bin/bash export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.cabal/bin export WINDOW_MANAGER=xmonad gnome-session ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm running the latest xmonad (0.9), and my xmonad.hs is included below. The problem is that many applications crash when I change desktops, but *only* when docked with the external display oriented so that the display is above my laptop's lcd. No other orientation causes problems - putting the screen to either side, or below the laptop display works just fine. I also don't experience stability issues with gnome + metacity when the monitors are in this configuration. Furthermore, this is the second OS install that has exhibited this problem (both were Debian testing installs, but with different versions of testing). I've posted my .xsession-errors file after having a gnome terminal and thunderbird crash while switching desktops on hpaste: http://hpaste.org/44316/weird_app_crashes_with_xmonad This has been going on for over a year now - I ran non-gnome tools for quite a while, but I'd like to give them a shot again, since other (more annoying) stability issues arise when I yank bits of gnome out of their usual environment (e.g., gnome-terminals crashing every time I dock/undock, etc.). Run xmonad by full path, not "xmonad", with xmonad not in $PATH 2. Attempt to restart xmonad; the exec will fail. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? By default, I would expect xmonad to use the paths baked in by Cabal, but perhaps there is reason not to. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.9.1, built from darcs. Focus getting stuck on one window

Hello XMonad I'm experiencing a sporadic problem with XMonad. Sometimes when I start a session, I am unable to move focus away from the first window that I open. I can launch further windows, but they do not get focus. I can send the focused window to a different workspace, in which case focus switches to another window (but I can't then switch focus away from that window). When I try to switch focus there is some flickering -- I think the red border disappears and then reappears again as though focus very briefly switches where I'm trying to send it and then goes back again. I haven't been able to see any pattern in when this does and doesn't happen. When it happens it starts immediately at the beginning of the session. Restarting XMonad doesn't fix the problem; nor does logging out and in again (I guess this is a big clue that there's something pretty fundamentally wrong). On restarting my box I seem to get a 50/50 chance that it will happen. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, using XMonad from the standard package repo. I'm conscious that this is a rather unhelpful bug report. Can you give me any clues what I can do to get some more diagnostics for the problem when I experience it? Thanks -Ben

Reseting Layout with Magnifier

Hi, I've recently started using the Magnifier layout. This works great, however when I try to reset the layout in the current screen to the default: -- Reset the layouts on the current workspace to default , ((modMask, xK_h ), setLayout $ XMonad.layoutHook conf) For some reason, magnifier is set to ToggleOn. I would like the default to have magnifier off, since that's what I normally use. Should I be resetting to default in some other way, or is there a way to tell magnifier what to reset to? waitForProcess error on startup

I've written a shell script that chooses which browser I would prefer to run based on what's available on my machine. In my xmonad.hs I use readProcess to get the name at startup, and then bind a key to running that name. On my Solaris machine, with an older GHC, this works perfectly, but on my Ubuntu machine with a newer GHC it gives an error at startup: xmonad-x86_64-linux: waitForProcess: does not exist (No child processes) Maybe it tries to get the pid of the child after launching the script but it executes too fast? Here's the snippet from xmonad.hs: main = do home_folder <- getEnv "HOME" editor <- getEditor browser_name <- (readProcess (joinPath [home_folder, "etc/utils/pick_best_browser"]) ["-n"] []) xmonad $ defaults editor home_folder ((head . lines) browser_name) The script when I run it gives this output: /usr/bin/chromium-browser And when I run it with the -n flag like I'm passing above: chromium-browser Which is exactly the output I expect. Since it all works fine on a another box I don't think it's anything wrong with the script -- I figured it could be an environment problem but it only relies on $HOME. Any ideas? Thanks, Joe G.
