These two channels are limited in size (and this is a practical concerned for me). Moreover using arguments pollutes the process listing and also leak some information. I would suggest reading both pieces of state from a file descriptor instead.

xmonad and UTF-8

Hi, It seems XMonad.Hooks.DynamicLog doesn't deal with UTF-8 by default: unicode characters appear as blocks in the title area of my dzen2 status. I'm using the 'statusBar' function. Any idea? Regards, -- Bastien

xmonad as a stand-alone?

Dear all, I am rather new to "manually" setting up a desktop environment, so please bear with me. I would like to be able to boot my system straight into xmonad, without having to have any particular desktop environment installed. Currently, I run LXDE and am able to choose xmonad as my wm, but LXDE is of course still present, and I would like to be rid of it. My goal is a "clean system" based only around xmonad and any other packages I need to get it running. How could I accomplish this? What config files would I have to fiddle with to get it running, and what other packages would I need apart from xmonad? Thanks in advance to everyone! Best, Chris

Hi, I was trying to replicate dwm status bar and I realised it was not possible: there's no way to differentiate between a focused workspace which contain windows and one that doesn't. Cheers, -- Bastien

This is rather unhelpful since it doesn't actually highlight the true cause, and had me scratching me head for quite a while.

keyboard layout change

Hello, I have a question regarding setting a shortcut for changing the keyboard layout in Xmonad. In Gnome there is a graphical utility for this and in FVWM I've done this by using the setxkbmap command in the .fvwmrc file. First using the setxkbmap command from the command line works, however one of the layouts that I'm using is Cyrillic, so once I'm in it, there's no way I can go back to a Latin keyboard layout. So I looked up the following website: http://www.xfree86.org/current/XKB-Config2.html#5 and following the advice there created a custom-kbl.conf file in the xorg.conf.d directory. However when I restarted X, all that did was make both my mouse and keyboard inoperational, so I had to reboot using LiveCD and delete the xorg.conf.d directory which I had created. Any idea what I should do? Btw, I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and had installed xmonad via the synaptic package manager. Thanks a lot in advance.
