From dwm to xmonad

Hi, I'm a dwm user in the process of migrating to xmonad and I stumbled upon a few obstacles: I would like to apply layouts directly without having to cycle through all the existing layouts. The following tentative: , ((modm, xK_f ), setLayout $ Layout Full) is not entirely satisfying: I don't know how to apply smartBorders and I'd like the NextLayout message to continue to work : so I guess it would be better to jump to an element of the layout list... ? There's a NextLayout message, but no PreviousLayout one, why? Is there a way to handle the _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW property so that xdotool windowactivate foo activate the tag where foo lives, gives focus to foo and make it the master? I can't go fullscreen with zathura or sxiv (but I can with mplayer)... Concerning sxiv the binding which should trigger fullscreen has absolutely no effects. I only have the following user status setup in dwm: xsetroot -name "$( date +%H:%M )" How can I achieve the same effect in xmonad with dzen2? Cheers, -- Bastien

Virtual desktops?

Dear all, I am rather new to Xmonad (loving it though!), so sorry if this question has an obvious solution. I am very used to working with virtual desktops in conventional WMs, and its an important part of my workflow. I was wondering if I can do the same thing in Xmonad? What I want is to be able to specify a number of such virtual desktops (or virtual monitors if you like), and then easily switch between them using some keybinding (preferably one I can mod myself). Can't use any of the contrib modules

I have only just started using Xmonad so apologies if this is a very basic question. I wanted to try out some of the modules in the contrib list. Move window to slave on another workspace

Hi, I have keybindings along the lines of [ ((modMask .|. mod1Mask, k), windows (W.shift i)) | (i, k) <- zip myWorkspaces [xK_F1 .. xK_F12] ] for calling "windows (W.shift i)" to move the current window to a given workspace using Mod+Fn. The problem is, this usually moves the window to the master slot on the target workspace. Whereas I almost invariably want it moved to a slave slot. There must be a way of modifying the command so that it always moves the window to the slave, but my Haskell chops aren't up to figuring out how. As far as I understand it, shift always inserts the moved window directly above the focused window on the target workspace. If the focused window was the master, then the shifted window becomes the new master I think inserting it directly below the focuses window would probably have the desired effect, since presumably a new window below the focused one can never end up as the master. But I don't understand XMonad stacksets anywhere near well enough to figure out how to write a version of shift that does what I want. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Can anyone help with this? Scrot grabs the keyboard to listen for a keypress as a signal to abort. If the keyboard is not avaiable, it dies with error: ```giblib error: couldn't grab keyboard:Resource temporarily unavailable``` To test: bind "scrot -s > /tmp/logfile" to a keypress in xmonad.hs Activate keypress, nothing happens. Check logfile, find error stated above. I think it's a race condition because binding to "sleep 0.2; scrot -s" works here. The real problem is that xmonad is unnecessarily hanging on to keyboard and the spawned app is expecting it. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.9.2/slackware linux

Issue with smartBorders from XMonad.Layout.NoBorders

Hello everyone Seems like I've run over a bug in XMonad.Layout.NoBorders when using smartBorders. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open two windows w0 and w1 in a simple tiling mode 2. Click on window w1 while holding your mod key (window will start to float). Borders will now appear around window w1 3. Do the same with window w0, but DO NOT resize the window Notice how window w0 has no borders, which seems to be a bug to me. As soon as window w0 is resized, the borders appear. I'm using the latest snapshots of xmonad and xmonad-contrib from darcs. Best regards -- Džen

Toggle between last used windows

Hi, with "toggleWSNoSP" i can toggle between the recently visited workspaces. How can i do that for the most recently used windows? Say i am working with vim in one window and ghci in another. How can i define a keyboard shortcut to toggle between the two? Thanks in advance, Chris

[patch] XMonad.Hooks.InsertPosition per workspace

Hi, a small patch that might be useful for others. It adds insertPositionPerWorkspace to XMonad.Hooks.InsertPosition and allows to define insertPosition for a particular workspace. Example: -- manageHook = insertPositionPerWorkspace [("5:www",(Below,Older))] Below Newer <+> myManageHook -- "5:www" is my tabbed workspace for uzbl-browser. A new window opens in "background" and the focus remains on the old window, whereas in every other workspace the new window is focused. Kind regards, Frank
