How to get floating focused window on top?

Hello, When dealing with focused windows like dialogs quite often a popup window appears *behind* the main window, stealing the focus. To get access to that window one has to move the main window to get to it. This is quite annoying and it could be easily solved if the focused window where kept on top of the floating windows stack. Is there any way to set this behaviour? Thanks a lot, JP

ManageHook question

Hi all, If I wasn't still an almost total Haskell newbie, this would probably be easy for me to answer for myself. As is... If I want to have a manage hook that will run anytime a window title contains a string how do I do that? For example title =? 'downloads' --> doIgnore but instead of exactly matching title against 'downloads' we want to run the doIgnore for any window whose title contains 'downloads'. -Sean-

Patch for extending spawnSelected with labels

Hi, I have extended and refactored the spawnSelected function from xmonad-contrib (XMonad.Action.GridSelect). The idea behind this patch is follwing: When using the classic spawnSelected function with long command lines and in combination with defaultGSConfig the label displayed in the grid did not fit into the label. This could be very confusing if two or more entries have the same prefix. For example multiple xrandr entries. regards Daniel

Hiding windows, showing desktop

Hi folks, I'm interested in temporarily hiding all the windows on one of my workspaces. Ideally, I'd also like to restore them to their original state either by pressing a key again or, even better, as soon as I'm doing something that affects the current layout (press focusUp key, for example). So here are my questions: (1) Is this functionality available in XMonadContrib and I just didn't know how to look? If so, pointers are appreciated. (2) If the answer to (1) is no, then I don't mind implementing it, but I'd appreciate pointers on how to go about it. Here's what I tried so far. Option 1: In order to support the behaviour that a change of the current layout should restore the windows, I wrote a layout modifier. It simply ran "hide" over the windows it gets in the stack passed to it and later restored them using "reveal". This worked nicely, but it didn't hide floating windows. The reason, I thought: floating windows are not passed to the layout. Option 2: To overcome the problem with Option 1, I changed the code so that the messages to the layout modifier include the *entire* window list of the current workspace, not only the non-floating ones, and then I handled that list. The result: nothing changed because, as it turns out, after the layout is done doing whatever it does, the "windows" function in the core XMonad applies "reveal" to all floating windows on the current workspace. Option 3: So I thought this calls for heavier guns. So one thing I tried was to temporarily replace the window stack of the current workspace with Nothing and later bring it back. My current code for this doesn't do the right thing and causes lots of trouble. While some debugging and tweaking and hacking may get that to work eventually, it just seems too hackish an approach. So, what do the xmonad gurus say about how one could implement this? With things like conky running on one's desktop, this seems to be a rather useful functionality to have. Cheers, Norbert

strange application crashes with gnome/xmonad

I'm mystified by a problem I'm having that only seems to appear when using xmonad with gnome, and I am hoping that someone here can help debug the issue. I'm running xmonad with gnome per the instructions here: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_Gnome#Setting_up_… specifically, I set up an xmonad.desktop file in my user's applications dir, and I created another file in xsessions that invokes the following xmonad.start: ---- xmonad.start: -------------------------------------------------------------- #!/bin/bash export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.cabal/bin export WINDOW_MANAGER=xmonad gnome-session ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm running the latest xmonad (0.9), and my xmonad.hs is included below. The problem is that many applications crash when I change desktops, but *only* when docked with the external display oriented so that the display is above my laptop's lcd. No other orientation causes problems - putting the screen to either side, or below the laptop display works just fine. I also don't experience stability issues with gnome + metacity when the monitors are in this configuration. Furthermore, this is the second OS install that has exhibited this problem (both were Debian testing installs, but with different versions of testing). I've posted my .xsession-errors file after having a gnome terminal and thunderbird crash while switching desktops on hpaste: http://hpaste.org/44316/weird_app_crashes_with_xmonad This has been going on for over a year now - I ran non-gnome tools for quite a while, but I'd like to give them a shot again, since other (more annoying) stability issues arise when I yank bits of gnome out of their usual environment (e.g., gnome-terminals crashing every time I dock/undock, etc.). By default, I would expect xmonad to use the paths baked in by Cabal, but perhaps there is reason not to. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.9.1, built from darcs.
