Focus getting stuck on one window

Hello XMonad I'm experiencing a sporadic problem with XMonad. Sometimes when I start a session, I am unable to move focus away from the first window that I open. I can launch further windows, but they do not get focus. I can send the focused window to a different workspace, in which case focus switches to another window (but I can't then switch focus away from that window). When I try to switch focus there is some flickering -- I think the red border disappears and then reappears again as though focus very briefly switches where I'm trying to send it and then goes back again. I haven't been able to see any pattern in when this does and doesn't happen. When it happens it starts immediately at the beginning of the session. Restarting XMonad doesn't fix the problem; nor does logging out and in again (I guess this is a big clue that there's something pretty fundamentally wrong). On restarting my box I seem to get a 50/50 chance that it will happen. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, using XMonad from the standard package repo. I'm conscious that this is a rather unhelpful bug report. Can you give me any clues what I can do to get some more diagnostics for the problem when I experience it? Thanks -Ben

Reseting Layout with Magnifier

Hi, I've recently started using the Magnifier layout. This works great, however when I try to reset the layout in the current screen to the default: -- Reset the layouts on the current workspace to default , ((modMask, xK_h ), setLayout $ XMonad.layoutHook conf) For some reason, magnifier is set to ToggleOn. I would like the default to have magnifier off, since that's what I normally use. Should I be resetting to default in some other way, or is there a way to tell magnifier what to reset to? waitForProcess error on startup

I've written a shell script that chooses which browser I would prefer to run based on what's available on my machine. In my xmonad.hs I use readProcess to get the name at startup, and then bind a key to running that name. On my Solaris machine, with an older GHC, this works perfectly, but on my Ubuntu machine with a newer GHC it gives an error at startup: xmonad-x86_64-linux: waitForProcess: does not exist (No child processes) Maybe it tries to get the pid of the child after launching the script but it executes too fast? Here's the snippet from xmonad.hs: main = do home_folder <- getEnv "HOME" editor <- getEditor browser_name <- (readProcess (joinPath [home_folder, "etc/utils/pick_best_browser"]) ["-n"] []) xmonad $ defaults editor home_folder ((head . lines) browser_name) The script when I run it gives this output: /usr/bin/chromium-browser And when I run it with the -n flag like I'm passing above: chromium-browser Which is exactly the output I expect. Since it all works fine on a another box I don't think it's anything wrong with the script -- I figured it could be an environment problem but it only relies on $HOME. Any ideas? Thanks, Joe G.

Segmentation fault in fromMessage

Not Showing Current Layout in xmobar

Hi, I'm using xmobar with John Goerzen's configuration: , logHook = dynamicLogWithPP $ xmobarPP { ppOutput = hPutStrLn xmproc , ppTitle = xmobarColor "green" "" . shorten 50 } However, I'd like to exclude the name of the current layout from display, but keep everything else as is. How can I do that? Thank you

If I set the script to a non-existent file, I see xmobar with a message "Could not execute command", so I know it's all configured fine, but for the script that checks gmail. If I run that script manually, I see a single integer value on standard output. I can't seem to find any place that xmobar is logging to help identify what is causing the error (xmobar refusing to display when asked to Run Com my script. xmonad on Ubuntu 10.04 PPC on PowerBook G4

Hi, I'm trying to get xmonad to work on my PowerBook G4 running Ubuntu 10.04 PPC. I'm running into a problem where xmonad doesn't seem to be reacting to any commands I send it. For example, if I try to switch workspaces using "mod 2", nothing will happen. If I have a terminal window open when I attempt this, the cursor will blink, but nothing else will happen. I'm running xmonad under Gnome with the Gnome integration hooks, and this works fine on my PC hardware. I have tried the following steps to troubleshoot: * Changing the modifier from the default (Alt), to Super (Apple command key). The same behavior occurs. * Launching xmonad standalone, without Gnome My xmonad configuration is the following: http://pastebin.com/H0M9Rw4J I've also captured the output of xev with input "alt space" under xmonad: http://pastebin.com/spYtG0B6 If anyone has any insight into how I could fix or further diagnose this, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know. Ditching Gnome

Hi, I've been using xmonad on top of gnome for some time now. I would really like to drop gnome, and use xmonad straight up. However, gnome has a number of small but significant features that I need to find replacements for: Must Have: 1. System tray: This is where many apps I use (e.g. Pidgin, Skype, Aqualung, Dropbox, etc.) place icons so I can see some status about them, and sometimes interact with them (though mostly just status). 2. Network: This also exists in the system tray but I separated it out because it's really important. This is the ability to see if I am connected or not, and to be able to choose wifi networks to connect to. 3. gnome-do: I use this as an easy way to launch applications. I don't use most of the more complicated features like combining objects and verbs. Nice to Have: 4. High-level view of all desktops and which apps are running on each. 5. Date, time, and whether. 6. System statistics. I have tried both xmonbar and dzen2, but had a hard time getting all the features I needed to work. I was hoping someone can point out what I can use to replace each of these, and throw in some good documentation to boot. I would love to ditch Gnome. Thanks for your help.
