detecting multi-head and other newbie questions

Hi, Thanks for xmonad; it's my first attempt to use a tiling WM, and is mostly easy, enjoyable, and very fast. I have a few questions that I haven't been able to answer with a bit of searching and trying. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and the package xmonad 0.9.1-2build2. ... http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Frequently_asked_questions#Multi_… ghc -e Graphics.X11.Xinerama.compiledWithXinerama Output is True. ghc -e "Graphics.X11.openDisplay [] >>= Graphics.X11.Xinerama.getScreenInfo" Output is [Rectangle {rect_x = 0, rect_y = 0, rect_width = 1280, rect_height = 800}] However, /usr/bin/gnome-display-properties also sees a 1680x1050 external monitor (but can't activate it when running from xmonad; works fine in GNOME). The xmonad FAQ says (given above) "there may be a problem with your X server configuration." I'm not that keen to mess with X configuration, which I haven't had to do in many years, and I'd like it to continue just working if I ever go back to GNOME. I've never modified anything in /etc/X11 on this machine ... I guess I don't know how monitor autodetection/configuration works, nor what accomplishes that (X? GNOME?), thus am completely clueless as to what approach to take to getting it to work under xmonad. Any hint would be much appreciated. ... Is it possible to make xmobar auto-hide? ... Many examples such as http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Config_archive/John_Goerzen%27s_C… suggest starting related programs in .xsession or .xinitrc but http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_Ubuntu#Configurat… suggets putting them in xmonad.hs which seems cleaner to me. I've done this, though sometimes after reloading xmonad with mod-q, applets no longer appear in trayer, though they're still running. Is there a "right way" that I'm missing? Full example of IndependentScreens

Hi Xmonad list.. Am a new user of Xmonad coming from awesome due to having to use Gnome at work and Xmonads Gnome integration is real nice.. Have one problem though , Multiple Screens , can't wrap my head around how xmonad handles that default and want to go for the way I'm used to have it work with separate workspaces for each screen.. Found the IndependentScreens thing in the documentation but can't figure out how to get it in the configuration so needs some help.. Could someone give me a working example of a Gnome enables xmonad config that uses IndependentScreens? Regards /Ola Karlsson

In your xmonad.hs, add an import to a missing module 2. Try to recompile 3. Watch xmonad present you a message suggesting you pass the -v argument to see what folders it's searching. Try passing -v to xmonad --recompile and get the same error. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? What I'd like to see is for --recompile to forward any arguments after it to the compiler, or for there to be a separate --args argument if that's preferable. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.9, ubuntu linux

Xmonad-contrib AppLauncher

The XMonad AppLauncher doesn't work properly with filenames with spaces. It seems to be because it uses the 'spawn' function from core. I replaced the spawn with safeSpawn from XMonad.Utils.Run for my instance, but I'm not sure how it would affect the "grand plan". I also can't make a patch since the tests fail on -fglasgow-exts.

darcs permissions error?

I tried pushing a patch to the xmonad-contrib repo today and got the following error: darcs: takeLock /home/srv/code/XMonadContrib/_darcs/lock in /home/srv/code/XMonadContrib: atomic_create /home/srv/code/XMonadContrib/_darcs/lock in /home/srv/code/XMonadContrib: permission denied (Permission denied) Anyone have any ideas about the cause? -Brent

tiling a window from manage hook?

If I want to shift windows to a different workspace using manage hooks, is there a way to also sink them so they are tiled rather than being the floating windows they default to? Ideally it would be like doShift "somewhere" <+> doTile but there isn't doTile of course. how does one go about accomplishing that?

Mod Key Issues - Sometimes

I been using Xmonad for a few months. My config is pretty simple, about the minimum 10 line example. When I first started I was using the default mod key of alt, this worked well 95% of time, although some programs alt key to access the menu would no longer be available. I also occasionally noticed that mod+l and mod+h would occasionally stop work, not frequently enough to curse but still annoying have to logout and back in again. Recently I switched to win key as my mod key. This works 98% of time. But in certain programs e.g. part of Rhythm box. I.e. once you go to Radio start a stream then window key binding doesnt (in most other parts of the app its fine), and still the occasionally not working on h and l. 98% is better than 95% Is this a known frustration and what is the best way to compensate when such problems occur? -- w: http://www.mattfreeman.co.uk/ t: http://www.twitter.com/mattcodes

Dual screen setup with (dual-screen) workspace swithching

Hi, I am quite new to xmonad, but I find it quite useful :D (compared to my window-dragging coworkers, who don't see the sense :D) The story is: I have a working dual-screen setup, where each screen is a workspace. This is probably the most default way to have it... My problem is, that I mostly work with apps that produce a lot of windows. This is the first reason why I have dual-screen setup after all... So I arrange nicely all the windows on the two screens (say [1] and [2]), but I also work with multiple instances of the application. That means I have another application (with similarly-looking windows) on screens [2] and [3]. And another on [4][5]. And another.... Now here's the catch: When I want to switch to the other project (2,3) i need to change BOTH workspaces (say: mod-w,mod-3, mod-e,mod-4). Then to go back the procedure repeats. This is annoying... It is even more annoying if I forget on which dual-workspaces my apps were, and I mess instance 1 with instance 2 (say have workspaces [1] and [4]). Then my app responds in silly way (of course) and I don't see why... So the question is: Is it possible to have a setup with 'dual-screen,dual-sub-workspace' workspaces? So to have [1][2] merged in [super1] and [3][4] merged into [super2] ? So when I switch to [super1] i get [1][2], and so on... It could be that [1][2] is merged into a big [1] (but preserving the mod-w,mod-e functionality!! That's a must!), so that (mod-shift-1) would move some other window to that workspace... I don't mind that it would end up in either say [1a] or [1b], that I can manage later ;) Thanks and regards, Kuba

Sorry for the noise. I'm not sure what went wrong earlier. I've too many ghci's open, and just recently cleaned out my ~/.cabal from old versions of xmonad and rebuilt clean with the infixr. So must have had wrong versions of something loaded.
