Article about xmonad not making X errors?

I recall reading at some point an article or blog post that discussed how XMonad leveraged the type system to guarantee that X errors couldn't occur. But no matter how much googling I do now I can't find it; I musn't be using the right search terms. Anyone know where it is?

As shepheb plans to feature urgency hooks in an upcoming 'Pimp your XMonad', it seemed time to submit these, although I can't shake the feeling that there should be a better way to write them, even sticking to base libs. They allow removing ppHidden formatting to independently format ppUrgent. I'm reasonably sure they're correct, at least passed all my test cases. Many thanks to b4taylor for writing the first iteration of stripDzen, showing me how to use span properly. (p.s. this patch is huge compared to others even though it's perhaps only 30 lines changed. Is that because I attached manually rather than just darcs send-ing?) regards, -- wmw

Real Tabbing?

Hy, is there any chance we might get real tabbing support in xmonad? Ill try to explain what I mean by that: I often use the "Tall" Layout. It would be nice If I could take any frame and apply a tabbed layout on it so that I can open several windows within that frame and get some tabs. Currently I cant get this behaviour because I have to select the frames where I want tabbing uppon compiletime and there is no keybinding for switching the tabs. So what I'm searching for is: 1. A Keystroke which makes the current frame tabbed 2. A possibility to shift a window into a frame (so it gets another tab) and out again. 3. The current Keybindings like Mod+{j,k} stay the same, they dont switch tabs. 4. New Keybindings for moving to the next tab in the current frame. Is it possible at all? I'm not into the xmonad sourcecode but perhaps the stack-set datastructure is not the right choice for this features. Perhaps some developers can tell about this. This is the only feature which im missing and which could make me go to ion3 because everytime I see a ion3 I love this feature. So, lets discuss! -- Dominik Bruhn mailto: dominik(a)dbruhn.de

What do you see instead? (This is a minor problem.) It seems that xmonad updates workspace layouts lazily; if the workspace is not visible, the layout does not change when new windows enter it. That's ok, except the gnome pager displays mini views of each workspace, and this lazy updating is visible in them. When a window moves to a non-visible workspace, the pager will show it floating over the other windows in that workspace, at the size and position it occupied previously. Switch to that workspace and the layout finally gets updated, with the new window tiled in (or whatever). What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.8 on debian unstable Please provide any additional information below. Changing focus with alt-tab as in Windows

Hello, is it possible to configure xmonad, to move the focus with alt-tab exactly as in Windows? As far as I could understand, only keyPress events are dispatched. But it seems keyUp events are required for this. Or maybe there are much more simpler solutions? Regards Alex

Use regexps for className matching?

For example className =? "Google Mail" --> doShift "1" className =? "Google Calendar" --> doShift "1" would become className <some regexp matching operator> "Google .*" doShift "1" How to do this in Haskell? I couldn't find any examples of this in the config archive.. Henri

Today I tried to build xmonad from the latest darcs source, and got an error message I don't understand. darcs patch: improve XMonad.Layout.Mosaic

It seems more useful to have the list of relative sizes (the only argument to the Mosaic constructor) to represent the master window by the first element, the window just below the master as the second, until either that list runs out, or there are no more windows. Now it is possible to behave like Tall's resizing with: > Mosaic [3,1,1,1,1,1,1] having a function that just changes the first element of the list; using for illustration (clearly the empty list case should be handled); > sendMessage (SlopeMod (\(x:xs) -> x*2:xs)) In the previous scheme, we didn't know which element of the list represented the size of the Master. -- Adam
