This patch adds the capability to hook on X event processing in the
configuration, but, unlike the EventHook module from contrib(Which
implements this via a layout modifier and thus doesn't get notified
about events already handled by xmonad), works for all events that
xmonad receives. The custom handler function can choose on whether or
not to call the default handler for the message afterwards.
Since already handled messages are not broadcasted to the layout or
anywhere else this functionality cannot be implemented as a contrib
module and hence requires core changes.
Such a feature would be useful for things that need more fine grained
control over the default event handling. One usage case would be to
react on changing window properties like the title, e.g. to manage
windows that set their title after creation.

If the user used the mouse to change window focus (moving into or clicking on a
window), this should be handled differently than focus changes due to keyboard
commands. Specifically, it's inappropriate to discard window enter/leave events
while the mouse is moving. This fixes the bug where a fast mouse motion across
multiple windows resulted in the wrong window keeping focus.
It's also helpful information for contrib modules such as UpdatePointer - it's
supposed to move the mouse pointer only in response to keyboard actions, not if
the user was moving the mouse.

According to the ICCCM, clients should send a synthetic unmap event when they
initiate an unmap. The old code waited for these synthetic unmaps to unmanage
windows. However, certain 'obsolete' clients do not send synthetic unmaps
(notably xpdf's find dialog). These windows entered a zombified state: xmonad
does not manage them, yet they are still mapped and raised on screen.
The new algorithm (derived from wmii):
- track windows that are mapped on screen
- track the number of expected unmap events for each window, increment every
time 'hide' is called on a window that is not mapped.
- decrement the expected unmap counter on each unmap event
- treat an unmap event as genuine (ie. unmap the window) when:
- the event is synthetic (per ICCCM)
- OR there are no expected unmap events for this window

When resuming, we were (implicitly) relying on 'scan' to find all

Fix this by traversing the StackSet serialised during a restart, setting
the intial X states for each window, whether visible or hidden.

Xmonad now implements resize requests in a consistent manner.
* If the window is FLOATING, we implement the program's request, and
correctly update the StackSet; so it will keep the new size. This
should work correctly even for non-current windows.
* Otherwise, we ignore the request. As per ICCCM, we send a fake
ConfigureNotify containing the new (unchanged) geometry. This is
perfectly ICCCM compliant, and if it breaks your client, it's your
own fault.

The use of arrow keys for swapLeft/Right clash with firefox's back
button. Use the more intuitive mod-shift-jk for this. (It's a movement
operation, after all).
This clashes with IncMaster, so we use mod+comma and mod+period for
these (i.e. the keys mod < and mod > , to move windows to and from the
master area).
While we're here, replace the use of the terms 'left' and 'right' for
navigation, in comments and identifiers, with 'up' and 'down' instead.
Hence mod-j == focusDown. Far more intuitive for people (dons) who live
in fullscreen mode and have vim movement wired into their central
nervous system.
Principle of least VI surprise: movement down or up means using j and k.

In order to give a better account of how focus and master interact, and
how each operation affects focus, we reimplement the StackSet type as a
two level nested 'Zipper'. To quote Oleg:
A Zipper is essentially an `updateable' and yet pure functional
cursor into a data structure. Zipper is also a delimited
continuation reified as a data structure.
That is, we use the Zipper as a cursor which encodes the window which is
in focus. Thus our data structure tracks focus correctly by
construction! We then get simple, obvious semantics for e.g. insert, in
terms of how it affects focus/master. Our transient-messes-with-focus
bug evaporates. 'swap' becomes trivial.
By moving focus directly into the stackset, we can toss some QC
properties about focus handling: it is simply impossible now for focus
to go wrong. As a benefit, we get a dozen new QC properties for free,
governing how master and focus operate.
The encoding of focus in the data type also simplifies the focus
handling in Operations: several operations affecting focus are now
simply wrappers over StackSet.

When focus was separated from the stack order on each workspace, we
forgot to update the Arbitrary instance to set random focus. As spotted
by David R, this then invalidates 4 of our QC properties. In particular,
the property involving where focus goes after a random transient
(annoying behaviour) appeared to be correct, but wasn't, due to
inadequate coverage.
This patch sets focus to a random window on each workspace. As a result,
we now catch the focus/raise/delete issue people have been complaining
about.
Lesson: make sure your QuickCheck generators are doing what you think
they are.

Using Typeables as the only constraint on layout messages is a bit
scary, as a user can send arbitrary values to layoutMsg, whether they
make sense or not: there's basically no type feedback on the values you
supply to layoutMsg.
Folloing Simon Marlow's dynamically extensible exceptions paper, we use
an existential type, and a Message type class, to constrain valid
arguments to layoutMsg to be valid members of Message.
That is, a user writes some data type for messages their layout
algorithm accepts:

Hi all,
Scratchpad is an XMonad extension that brings up or spawns a terminal window
on Alt-F2 (as I have it configured) and hides it in a hidden workspace when
I am done.
The code looked pretty simple and I tried to adapt this script to do the
same thing with my Conkeror window. This script worked until I upgraded to
0.8.1. Now it doesn't detect an existing Conkeror window and keeps launching
a new instance.
Xprop output shows the class name of Conkeror is: "Navigator", "Conkeror".
Since hpaste.org seems to be down, here it is my hacked Scratchpad sans
imports and header comment ( if the author of Scratchpad is reading this,
yes the code below is pretty much cut-and-paste):

I'm used to having focus-follows-mouse, so I've enabled that with xmonad;
however there are situations where the focus does NOT follow the mouse,
such as when I switch workspaces; the focus can be in one window, and
the mouse can be over another window. The usual way, in those
situations, to get the focus where the mouse is, is to move the mouse
out of the window and then back in again.
I've tried the UpdatePointer module, but that isn't really
focus-follows-mouse, that's mouse-follows-focus. This messes things up
in, for example, Gimp, where I have Gimp tiled (with IM layout) and then
a dialogue window pops up, and the mouse moves position to that window,
while still focused in its own window, which can really wreck things
when one is trying to do delicate graphics manipulations!
So is there a way of having true focus-follows-mouse, or of having some
kind of exceptions for UpdatePointer for windows of a given class?
There are two problematical use-cases for me. The first is the Gimp one
above, where I do not want the UpdatePointer behaviour to apply.
The second use-case is when I have selected something in one workspace
(for example, the workspace where my web-browser is) and switch to
another workspace, where I type a command and then middle-mouse-click to
paste what I selected from the previous workspace. But what can happen
is that when I switch workspaces, the focus is in terminalA, but the
mouse is over terminalB, so what I type goes in terminalA, and what I
paste goes in terminalB, which is not what I wanted. In this case, I do
want the UpdatePointer behaviour to apply.
Any ideas for solutions?

What's the best window setting for fullscreen games with xmonad? I
want tiling most of the time, but for fullscreen games I'd prefer to
have xmonad keep its hands off. But if I use doFloat, then my game is
almost fullscreen but has an ugly red border around it (I like the
border when I'm using tiled windows, just not for fullscreen games,
otherwise I'd just disable it entirely), and if I use doIgnore, then
my game gets mouse focus but not keyboard focus. Neither option is
optimal. Is there a way to disable the border on a per window basis,
or to make it give an ignored window keyboard focus before ignoring
it, or some other clever hack?

I wrote a module that uses hint[1] to manipulate the state of xmonad
using normal Haskell expressions during runtime(like emacs' eval
feature), which is available here:

I've put this in a separate package instead of using a contrib-module,
since that'd introduce hint as another dependency which should be
avoided, if someone doesn't want that feature and it should be a simpler
solution for the user than to add another flag to xmonad-contrib.cabal.
The expressions are typechecked and can return an result whose type is
an instance of Show(The expressions to be interpreted have to be
monomorphic and this approach seems better than having the user supply a
type witness or such all the time). The error handler and the
module/imports context of the expressions can be customized. It might be
possible to somehow wreck xmonad by some expressions, but only to that
extent to which it is already possible in xmonad.hs.
Anyhow, I'm not sure whether this could cause any other instabilities,
so any comments on that would be appreciated. After that I will prepare
a package and upload it to hackage for easier installation.

After using GridVariants.TallGrid for a while, I got fed up with the
fact that the meaning of columns and rows get exchanged when TallGrid is
rotated using Mirror (as well as with other small nuisances).
The attached patch contains a new layout, GridVariants.SplitGrid, which
allows the orientation of the split between the master and the slave
grid to be specified as a parameter, thus doing away with the need to
use Mirror or Reflect with this layout.
What SplitGrid and TallGrid do should be achievable using the standard
Grid layout plus a layout combinator. However, the automatic assignment
of clients to the master/slave grids would require more plumbing in
xmonad.hs, which is why I opted for writing this as a separate layout.

This patch lets X derive Typeable so that expressions that return an X
action can be interpreted in a type-safe way using hint(to allow runtime
evaluation of haskell expressions in the context of the running xmonad).

This is a rather big change. Rather than make spawned processes become
children of init, we handle them in xmonad. As a side effect of this change,
we never need to use waitForProcess in any contrib module -- in fact, doing so
will raise an exception. The main benefit to handling SIGCHLD is that xmonad
can now be started with 'exec', and will correctly clean up after inherited
child processes.

I've been using xmonad with great success with my thinkpad x61 tablet.
Although xmonad is so keyboard focused it still works quite well
without one— so long as the compromise of a panel desktop switcher is
used (I'm using gnome-panel).
One issue I haven't solved yet is cellwriter
(http://risujin.org/cellwriter/) According to xprop cellwriter is a
"utility window", not a dock, and doesn't provide the struts field,
even when it is set to dock mode. As a result, when I unhide it using
the notification icon it pops up as a float in the middle of my
screen.
What I'd like to do is treat it as a dock: Accept the size it assumes,
force it to bottom of the screen (just above my existing panel), and
prevent anything from overlapping it or it from overlapping anything
(shrinking the tiled area as a result). I expect that other people
might find the same kind of behavior useful for things like
calculators, but perhaps not— since it wouldn't be important to have a
calculator on all workspaces. :)
Can someone point me to some starting points on how I can get it to
behave this way?
