Question re Layout.MagicFocus

I've recently started using Layout.MagicFocus. It's brilliant, I love it. But there is just one thing... I still use a mouse, and should the mouse pointer happen to drift out of the master window, all hell breaks loose as the focus repeatedly changes in a wicked loop. Switching layouts will break out of the loop, but it is annoying to have to do so. I have tried setting focusFollowsMouse to False, with no effect. Has anyone encountered this problem, or have a solution? Thank you, drc

Hey List, Here's another patch. It modifies the XSelection module so you can pass a string modifying function to the promptSelect functions. This lets you run your own escape routines for various reasons. -Yaakov

It turns out that FF3 breaks for me in the same way with multiple other window managers, so this is almost certainly nothing to do with xmonad. My apologies for the noise. view workspace key shortcuts

This is probably a stupid question, and I expect you xmonad hackers will know the answer in an instant. I have workspaces which are called by a mix of names and numbers, like so: myWorkspaces = ["www", "2", "3", "mail", "gimp"] ++ map show [6..9] Now, I know we already have default keymappings which allow you to quickly view (or send windows to) workspaces by their number. So, yes, I can already type Mod-1 and get to the "www" workspace, Mod-4 and get to the "mail" workspace. And, yes, I already have the Xmonad.Actions.Commands plugin installed, which I have set up to give a menu of workspaces when one hits the right key-combo. However, what I would like to do is have a simple key-combo which will get me *directly* to a given workspace, such as Mod4-m to take me to the "mail" workspace, and so on; I want to be able to have meaningful shortcuts, not just numbers. But I haven't been able to figure out what the correct command is to bind to the keymap. I've made guesses, but they're all illegal Haskell; no surprise, because I don't know Haskell. (Some day, but not now). I mean, I know I need to add someCommand to my key-list, but what? , ((mod4Mask, xK_m), someCommand someOptions) Help? Hello, first I want to adress that dmenu and gmrun (both in the default keybindings and dmenu mentioned in the guided tour) are not listed as related tools in the download webpage (http://xmonad.org/download.html) i think they belong there. Secondly I'm starting a doc that pretends to be a guided tour lookalike of some of the XMonad Contrib, I'm starting this mainly because I think it's very difficult for newcomers to discover what extra features XMonad provides. Haddock documentation is pretty useful when you know what you are looking for, but when you're looking around to find if some feature is implemented already, the way that the documentation is indexed (by alphabetical order) doesn't help much. The in progress document is located here http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/XMonadContribTour and all are welcomed to contribute/comment/correct/etc. byebye!

Possible to change location of xmonad.hs?

I like to put all of my important configuration files inside ~/etc for easy backup. Is there a way to have xmonad load ~/etc/xmonad.hs in place of ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs? I know I could use a symlink but then I'd have to remember to set that up again, would prefer if there was a command line option to xmonad or someway to specify in ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs that it should just look at ~/etc/xmonad.hs.

Gnome Workspace Switcher + Xinerama?

I'm running Gnome Desktop+xmonad on both my laptop and my desktop. Works great. Love it. However, the Gnome Workspace Switcher (GWS) gets confused on my dual-monitor Xinerama desktop. Of course, xmonad treats my two monitors as independent views into different workspaces. GWS, however, seems (by default, at least) to treat both monitors as looking in on one double-wide workspace. The result is wierd behavior in GWS where it appears that the contents of the workspace in the out-of-focus monitor move to occupy its requisite half of whatever workspace the in-focus monitor just jumped to. I presume others out there have observed something similar. Anyone come up with a good workaround? (In my mind, the best solution: some X/Gnome configuration tweaks to get them on the same page, but I'm certainly open to all possibilities.) Thanks in advance for your ideas. --Tracy
