is there a way to build xmonad-contrib 0.9.2 on a system with ghc 7.4.1?

Hi I would like to install xmonad 0.9.2 (which worked fine for me) on my Ubuntu 12.04 system (GHC 7.4.1). Following the instructions on README, xmonad-0.9.2 compiles fine but xmonad-contrib-0.9.2 fails at the build stage: [101 of 180] Compiling XMonad.Layout.MouseResizableTile ( XMonad/Layout/MouseResizableTile.hs, dist/build/XMonad/Layout/MouseResizableTile.o ) XMonad/Layout/MouseResizableTile.hs:182:17: Could not deduce (Eq t) arising from the literal `0' from the context (Num t) bound by the type signature for replaceAtPos :: Num t => [Rational] -> t -> Rational -> [Rational] at XMonad/Layout/MouseResizableTile.hs:(182,1)-(185,61) Possible fix: add (Eq t) to the context of the type signature for replaceAtPos :: Num t => [Rational] -> t -> Rational -> [Rational] In the pattern: 0 In an equation for `replaceAtPos': replaceAtPos [] 0 x' = [x'] cabal: Error: some packages failed to install: xmonad-contrib-0.9.2 failed during the building phase. how to redirect dynamicLogXinerama output to a FIFO/named pipe?

I would like to be able to have xmonad write the output of its dynamicLogXinerama to a FIFO (that I can then read from a Unity app indicator and thus display the workspaces being currently used). I modified my desktop config so that rather than executing xmonad directly it instead runs a simple wrapper script #!/bin/sh mkfifo /tmp/xmonad-fifo xmonad >/tmp/xmonad-fifo but to my surprise running 'tail -f /tmp/xmonad-fifo' shows no output, while if I simply start xmonad in a terminal I can see it printing information about the workspaces being used to the terminal: [1] [1] [2]1 [2]1 ... It would be awesome if anyone could tell me why xmonad's dynamicLog output is not showing up in the FIFO. xmonad itself is clearly running (from the moment I start reading data from the FIFO.) thanks! ~l

Unreliable focus actions in Floating layout

Hi, another PITA of floating windows handling in Xmonad: 1) set floating layout on an empty workspace (SimplestFloat or SimpleFloat) 2) launch two X window applications consecutively, like xterm and then gVim 3) try to change focus with a keyboard - Prev/Next (Mod-j or Mod-k by default) - FOCUSED WINDOWS ALWAYS POPS UP 4) now try to move a bit the top window with a mouse (Mod-MouseButton1 by default) 5) try to change focus again like in point 3) -> FOCUSED WINDOW DOES NOT POP UP AND STAYS BELLOW Is ths a bug, a feature or am I missing something here ?

Hi Tobias, Thank you for your help. I tried adding the line , startupHook = ewmhDesktopsStartup but it made no difference. What I have realized, though, is that wmctrl correctly reports on which workspace each window is when I am running my laptop in "standalone" mode (ie, without external screens). When I plug in an external screen, suddenly wmctrl -l reports all windows as being in the currently active workspace: 0x02000005 2 ubuntu root@ubuntu: ~ 0x02c000a3 2 ubuntu Mozilla Firefox 0x0200015c 2 ubuntu l@ubuntu: ~ if I workspace 2 currently has focus and if, eg, workspace 0 has focus then 0x02000005 0 ubuntu root@ubuntu: ~ 0x02c000a3 0 ubuntu Yahoo! mupdf and llpp return from fullscreen

mupdf is configured doFloat and with isFullScreen --> doFullFloat and smartBorders it does perfectly go fullscreen. When I press 'f' again to return from fullscreen the previously floating mupdf window gets tiled. Same happens for llpp (mupdf based pdf viewer). No doFloat rule for llpp configured. What might be happening?

A third border color for the last focused window of a non-active screen

Hi list I have a question regarding the colors of window borders. As far as i can see there are the two values normalBorderColor and focusedBorderColor in the config, which define the focused and not-focused colors of window borders. At my workdesk I have a dual-head setup, so I select the two screens with mod-w and mod-e. Now every time I select the other screen the window of this screen which has been focused when i left the screen gets focused again. So my question is, is there any way how I could choose a third color for the last focused window of a screen which is not selected at the moment. Like for example in the following scenario: - I have 4 windows on each of the two screens - The right screen is selected and its top right window is focused - Now i select the left screen, so the top right window of the right screen gets inactive and the last active window of the left screen gets focused What i would like in this situation is that the top right window of the right screen gets a third border color, so that next time when I switch back to the right screen I can see in advance which of its windows will be focused. Unfortunately my Haskell isn't very good. Is there maybe any easy way how i could achieve that? Thanks, Mauro

XMonad.Action.KeyRemap make that I can't type anything + Alt Gr makes no effect

Hi, I'm french, and I use the dvorak programmer layout, on an azerty keyboard. I installed XMonad yesterday, and I started to configure it a bit. XMonad.Action.KeyRemap seemed perfect for me, because I would like to change layout (azerty / dvorak, and later, bepo (the "french dvorak")) dynamically. The problem is that : when I use "emptyKeyRemap", it's fine, I can type text, but when I use "dvorakAzertyRemap", I can't type anything (in fact, my key bindings don't change, and I can type in dmenu). I attached my xmonad.hs. Also, the bug is not in my "dvorakAzertyRemap" definition, there is exactly the same bug with "dvorakProgrammerKeyRemap". Also, under gnome / compiz, I can use the "Alt Gr" key, but under XMonad, it makes no effect. It's a bit annoying, because I need it to type accents, when I type in french with the dvorak programmer layout. The useful lines are : 18 (import), 139-140 (binding), 161 ("buildKeyRemapBindings"), 258 ("setDefaultKeyRemap"), and 300-316 (my custom "dvorakAzertyRemap"). Thank you in advance.

xmonad + fake xinerama + vertical rotation

I have the following problem and am wondering if anyone can help me with it. It is a bit weird but given xmonad's awesome multi-head/multi-workspace support I am guessing that someone in the xmonad community must have tried something similar. I am running xmonad 0.10. I have two "displays" attached to my computer. I write "displays" (with the double quotes) because one is an actual 19" monitor and the other is a Matrox Dualhead2Go (www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/) which in turn is running two additional 19" monitors. All three monitors have 1280x1024 resolution. The Matrox device is working as intended: it presents itself to the system as a single 2560x1024 screen. I have used xrandr to vertically rotate both screens (ie, both the "real" 19" screen connected to my computer as well as the "fake" Matrox 2560x1024 screen) and lay them out as I wish. As far as xrandr is concerned, I have two displays: ------------- -------------- | 19" | | fake | | screen | | Matrox | | | | screen | | | | | ------------- | | | | | | | | | | ------------ I have used fakexinerama (http://home.kde.org/~seli/fakexinerama/) to try to break up the second huge screen into two separate ones. I use the config: 3 0 0 1024 1280 1024 0 1024 1280 2048 0 1024 1280 to tell it I would like to treat my screens as if they were three 1024x1280 screens laid out side-to-side: ------------- ------------- ------------- | 19" | | 19" | | 19" | | screen | | screen | | screen | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------- ------------- ------------- I do need to scroll my mouse downwards to go from the center to the right-most screen, but that is not a problem. xmonad treats the left-most screen (which is the one directly connected to the computer) just fine but then something weird happens with the other two. What is strange is that in some regards xmonad seems to "respect" the fact that the center and right-most screens are not the same (eg, if I open a new terminal on the center screen it has the right dimensions -- 1024x1280 -- without overflowing into the right-most screen) but in others it doesn't and just treats the right-most screen as the "bottom half" of the center screen (eg, if I move the mouse to the right-most screen and press the keyboard shortcut for opening a terminal, it actually opens up a 1024x1280 terminal in the center screen and leaves the right-most screen empty). Now what I cannot understand is that I can run these three screens perfectly fine as long as I set them up horizontally. I just use the fakexinerama config 3 0 0 1280 1024 1280 0 1280 1024 2560 0 1280 1024 ------------------- ---------------------- -------------------- | 19" | | 19" | | 19" | | screen | | screen | | screen | | | | | | | -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- and xmonad is perfectly happy with telling apart the center and right-most screens: eg, placing the mouse in the right-most screen and pressing the keyboard shortcut for opening a terminal works just as intended (ie, the terminal shows up on the right-most screen and measures 1280x1024). Any hint on how I can get this peculiar setup to work while keeping the monitors vertical would be terrific.
