Boderc project Beyond the Ordinary: Design of Embedded Real-time Control The Boderc project focuses on distributed embedded real-time controllers of complex systems. An Oce printer is taken as a case-study and acts as a driver for the project. The target is an integral approach for a systematic architectural design, modeling, analysis, and validation methodology of such heterogeneous systems. A background in one of the basic disciplines (mechanics, electronics, computer science) and an open mind to solutions in the other domains is essential. In this project seven parties (four industrial companies: Océ Technologies, Philips CFT, AAS, Turnkiek, and three universities: Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Universiteit Nijmegen, Universiteit Twente) co-operate with the Embedded Systems Institute. The project location will be mainly Eindhoven / Venlo. You receive an appointment as Ph.D. student for four years at one of the three participating universities. The project is partly subsidized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Six PhD Positions 1. Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, department of Electrical Engineering, Control Systems group. Required: interest to work on the boundary of computer science (automata, transition systems, formal verification tools) and control theory (differential equations, dynamics, simulation, optimization). Topic: combine, extend and apply the available tools in these disciplines for embedded control design. The tasks include contributing to the integral specification model and developing analysis techniques for performance evaluation and exception handling. Contact and information: dr.ir. Topic: development of methods and tools for system specification, system verification, performance modeling, architecture exploration and design of distributed real-time embedded control systems. Haskell2LaTeX

Hi all, This is just a quick note to let you know that Haskell2LaTeX, my undergraduate project, is available from http://web.comlab.ox.ac.uk/oucl/work/ian.lynagh/Haskell2LaTeX/ In a nutshell it parses the code in a literate Haskell script and then writes it out again with the embedded Haskell nicely typeset. I don't think I can explain any better in this medium, so go take a look :-) Enjoy Ian

Evidence Elimination

I try the follow line in hugs (mode 98 enable) Prelude> :t (let f = \x -> x == x in ( f 'a', f 123 ) ) ERROR: Illegal Haskell 98 class constraint in inferred type *** Expression : let {...} in (f 'a',f 123) *** Type : Num Char => (Bool,Bool) Prelude> This happend because Num Char can never be satisfied with a predicate evidence. However in hugs without 98 mode the result of the previos line is : Prelude> :t ( let f = \x -> x == x in (f 'a' , f 123 ) ) let {...} in (f 'a',f 123) :: Num Char => (Bool,Bool) This (maybe) indicates how hugs make evidence elimination in runtime while Haskell 98 don´t do that. The format should be either standard PostScript (printable by any PostScript device) or PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format). In both cases, one should use only vectorial ("Type 1") fonts and not bitmap fonts. In case of acceptance of a paper at least one author must present the contribution at the workshop, otherwise it will be removed from the list of publications. It is expected that a special journal issue will be devoted to a sampling of papers presented at FMICS 2003. Since 1998, six special issues related to FMICS have been published (or will appear) in prestigious journals such as Formal Aspects of Computing, Formal Methods in System Design, and Science of Computer Programming.

Thanks for raising that I definitely mean "just for Haskell 98" I am not trying to say anything about Haskell-beyond-H98. In fact I have always personally thought it was wrong to have Float/Double/Ratio in Enum at all, but the majority view was otherwise a couple of years ago (for H98). But for post-H98, the field is wide open. Simon

I have never liked Float/Double/Ratio being in Enum, but there is no possibility of removing them now. A year or two ago, maybe. The task now is see a local optimum, not a global one. Folks The concrete is setting fast, but Ross points out that the instance for Enum (Ratio a) is inconsistent with that for Enum Float and Enum Double. (It's strange that these non-integral types are in Enum, but we're stuck with that.) All three use 'numericEnumFrom' etc for the enumFrom method, but Float and Double define succ and pred thus: instance Enum Float where succ x = x+1 pred x = x-1 But Ratio does not... it uses the default method for succ/pred which gives instance Integral a => Enum (Ratio a) where succ x = fromInt (1 + (toInt x)) Thus (succ (1.5 :: Float)) is 2.5 but (succ (3%2)) is 2%1 Furthermore, you'd expect that [x..y] would mean the same as [x,succ x .. y] and that is true for Float/Double but not for Ratio. So I propose to modify the instance decl for Ratio by adding explicit defns for succ/pred just like those in Float/Double. Any objections? Simon PS: CUP are typesetting the report now, assuming we can come to happy agreement about copyright etc. On that front, the CUP wheels are grinding, but they grind slow. I'll emit an update when I know something useful.

That is, program transformation is meant here in the sense of automated program adaptation by executable transformations. Such transformations are used in software maintenance but also in software development in various ways, e.g., for refactoring, software migration, mass maintenance, change logging, schema evolution, aspect weaving, and others.
