ANNOUNCE: Chameleon version 02-06
by Martin SULZMANN 21 Jun '02

21 Jun '02

Chameleon is a Haskell-style language which provides a flexible overloading mechanism based on Constraint Handling Rules (CHRs). The user can impose conditions on overloaded identifiers via CHRs. For example, consider the functional dependency class Collects ce e | ce -> e where ... In Chameleon, we would provide instead the following CHR: rule Collects ce e, Collects ce e' ==> e=e' The latest version including a number of examples can be down-loaded from here: http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~sulzmann/chameleon Currently, we have only implemented the front-end, i.e. the type checker. Also available are three papers - "Beyond Type Classes", describing the connection and differences compared to Haskell-style type classes. - "A Theory of Overloading", describing the theoretical machinery behind the Chameleon language. - "A Theory of Overloading Part II: Semantics and Coherence", describing an implementation scheme which we yet have to implement. The papers can be found under: http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~sulzmann/chr Cheers, Martin

ANNOUNCE: hat-2.00
by Malcolm Wallace 20 Jun '02

20 Jun '02

------------------------------------ hat-2.00 ------------------------------------ We are pleased to announce a new release of Hat, the Haskell tracing (an debugging) system for Haskell'98. This release of Hat is a major release. It is now distributed entirely separately from the nhc98 compiler, and supports both nhc98 and GHC as possible host compilers. Since the last release of Hat, the trace file format has changed, the browsing tools have been substantially rewritten for better cross-tool integration, and runtime performance has been improved. If you haven't already tried out the Hat tracing system, now is a good time to have a go! Features worth noting are: * There is a tutorial introduction to Hat, showing how to generate program traces, how to explore them, and how they can help you to debug Haskell programs. * All the interactive trace browsing tools are implemented in Haskell, including a simpler, textual version of hat-trail. They all inter-operate, and use a similar command syntax. * The trace-generating machinery can be used with either GHC or nhc98. Just use `hmake -ghc -hat' or `hmake -nhc98 -hat'. There is a new mailing list at haskell.org for discussion of the Hat system, and bug-reports. http://haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/hat For information on hat: http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/fp/hat/ For hat downloads: ftp://ftp.cs.york.ac.uk/pub/haskell/hat/ (Please note that a prior installation of hmake-3.05 is required.) Regards, The Hat team at York

It'll be 5.04 (the even numbers are stable releases, odd numbers are development only). Expect it "soon" - the only significant thing left to do is to get the documentation for the new libraries in good shape. Cheers, Simon
