reverse function application
by Hal Daume III 12 Jun '02

12 Jun '02

i have a function: (*==) :: B -> (C -> IO a) -> IO a basically, it takes b, does something to it to make c, performs the action on c and returns the value. the Bs are basically Doubles, so we'll consider them as such for now. suppose I want to string together a bunch of these things...i can write: 5 *== \x -> 6 *== \y -> somefunctiononxandy x y but i'd really like to be able to write: 5 *== 6 *== somefunctiononxandy or, secondarily 5 *== (6 *== somefunctiononxandy) but i can't seem to get this to work and my brain is beginning to hurt. i suppose this is basically the same as wanting to write something like: action1 >>= action2 >>= somefunction instead of action1 >>= \x -> action2 >>= \y -> somefunction x y so if it can be done for >>=, i can make it to work. any advice? - Hal -- Hal Daume III "Computer science is no more about computers | hdaume(a)isi.edu than astronomy is about telescopes." -Dijkstra | www.isi.edu/~hdaume

FMCO: New Symposium on Objects and Components
by F.S.de.Boer＠cwi.nl 11 Jun '02

11 Jun '02

We apologize for the reception of multiple copies. **************************CALL FOR PARTICIPATION******************************* First International Symposium on FORMAL METHODS FOR OBJECTS AND COMPONENTS (FMCO 2002) http://fmco.liacs.nl/fmco02.html IMPORTANT DATES - The symposium will be held November 5-8, 2002. - Deadline for REGISTRATION is September 15, 2002 PLACE Leiden, The Netherlands INVITED SPEAKERS Tutorials Manfred Broy (Technical University of Munchen) Werner Damm (University of Oldenburg) David Harel (The Weizmann Institute of Science) Bertrand Meyer (ETH Zurich and ISE) Perdita Stevens (Edinburgh University) Clemens Szyperski (Microsoft Research) Jos Warmer (Klasse Objecten) Technical presentations Erika Abraham-Mumm (CAU) Farhad Arbab (CWI) David Garlan (Carnegie Mellon University) John Hatcliff (Kansas State University) Jozef Hooman (University of Nijmegen) Bart Jacobs (University of Nijmegen) Paul Klint (CWI) Leslie Lamport (Microsoft Research) Gary Leavens (Iowa State University) Rustan Leino (Microsoft Research) Ugo Montanari (Pisa University) Oscar Nierstrasz (University of Berne) Ernst-Ruediger Olderog (University of Oldenburg) Amir Pnueli (The Weizmann Institute of Science) Bernhard Rumpe (Technical University of Munchen) Emil Sekerinski (McMaster University) Kaisa Sere (Åbo University) Joseph Sifakis (Verimag) Martin Wirsing (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) THEME Large and complex software systems provide the necessary infrastucture in all industries today. In order to construct such large systems in a systematic manner, the focus in the development methodologies has switched in the last two decades from functional issues to structural issues: both data and functions are encapsulated into software units which are integrated into large systems by means of various techniques supporting reusability and modifiability. This encapsulation principle is essential to both the object-oriented and the more recent component-based sofware engineering paradigms. Formal methods have been applied successfully to the verification of medium-sized programs in protocol and hardware design. However, their application to the development of large systems requires more emphasis on specification, modeling and validation techniques supporting the concepts of reusability and modifiability, and their implementation in new extensions of existing programming languages like Java. The objective of this symposium is to bring together researchers and practioners in the areas of software engineering and formal methods to discuss the concepts of reusability and modifiability in component-based and object-oriented software systems. The following issues related to modifiability and reusability in components and objects will be discussed by leading experts in the fields of Formal Methods and Software Engineering: - Specification - Verification - Validation - Modeling techniques - Architectures - Programming languages - Semantics - Type theory - Design methodology - Compositionality - Refinement - Theorem-proving - Model checking - Tools FORMAT The Symposium is a four days event in the style of the former REX workshops, organized to provide an atmosphere that fosters collaborative work, discussions and interaction. Lectures are given by the invited speakers listed above. Participation is limited to about 80 people. The program consists of invited tutorials and more technical presentations, and contains an exquisite social event. Both tutorial and technical contributions will be published after the workshop in a proceedings of Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer-Verlag. ORGANISING COMMITTEE F.S. de Boer (CWI) M.M. I have decided to seek a confidential co-operation with you in the execution of the deal described Hereunder for the benefit of all parties and hope you will keep it as a top secret because of the nature of this transaction. Within the Department of Mining & Natural Resources where I work as an Executive Accountant and with the cooperation of four other top officials, we have in our possession as overdue payment bills totaling Twenty! - One Million, Five Hundred Thousand U. S. Dollars ($21,500,000.) which we want to transfer abroad with the assistance and cooperation of a foreign company/individual to receive the said fund on our behalf or a reliable foreign non-company account to receive such funds. More so, we are handicapped in the circumstances, as the South Africa Civil Service Code of Conduct does not allow us to operate offshore account hence your importance in the whole transaction. This amount $21.5m represents the balance of the total contract value executed on behalf of my Department by a foreign contracting firm, which we the officials over-invoiced deliberately. Though the actual contract cost have been paid to the original contractor, leaving the balance in the Tune of the said amount which we have in principles gotten approval to remit by Key tested Telegraphic Transfer (K.T.T) to any foreign bank account you will provide by fi! ling in an application through the Justice Ministry here in South Africa for the transfer of rights and privileges of the former contractor to you. GreenCard --target=ffi
by Ferenc Wagner 08 Jun '02

08 Jun '02

The GreenCard manual promotes use of the FFI target (`You're encouraged to use the ffi target, since the Haskell output it generates can be used with all Haskell systems that support the common FFI (as of June 2001, all of them).'), but doesn't give any examples for using it. In the distribution there is an StdDIS.gc for Hugs and another for GHC, but what should I import with the FFI target? The C stub #includes HsFFI.h, which GHC provides, but Hugs doesn't. What should I use? If I go ahead using what I have, Hugs says that `initModule undefined' when I try to load the GC module. Any help appreciated. Feri.

At 2002-06-03 09:22, Wolfgang Jeltsch wrote: >I think, it would be better to > * create a class, which has only an identity and a composition > member, and call this class Arrow or Morphism; > * create a subclass of this class which introduces pure (arr); > * create a subclass of the class introducing pure in order to > introduce first. I agree. I have something similar in my experimental alternative Prelude project 'HBase', but only two classes: <http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/hbase/Source/Cat egory/Composition.hs?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/plain> <http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/hbase/Source/Cat egory/Arrow.hs?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/plain> I call them 'Compositor' and 'Arrow'. I see two issues: 1. Should I add your intermediate class? Do you have examples of something that has 'pure' but not 'first'? 2. What are the best names? I used 'Arrow' because it's for "arrows" as defined by John Hughes <http://haskell.cs.yale.edu/arrows/>. I might change 'Compositor' to 'Morphism' if it makes more sense to people. As you point out, Hughes' "arrows" are a strict subset of category theory "arrows". -- Ashley Yakeley, Seattle WA
