Will it work if you set data-accessor-template < 0.2.1.3 in the .cabal file? I think that version is acceptable to both ghc-6.10 and 6.12. John

ANN: Yi 0.6.2.2

Hi everybody, I'm very excited to announce the first release of Yi in nearly a year. For most of this time, Yi has been rather tough to install because of the mess of dependencies. Today these issues were resolved, and I uploaded a new package to Hackage, so installing Yi should be as simple as: $ cabal update $ cabal install yi If you have Gtk2Hs, it'll automatically build with Pango support, too. If not, it'll use the vty package on Hackage. I'm not sure whether either of these will work on Windows, unfortunately. There have also been a few changes since the last release a year ago: * Improvements to the Scion bindings, which may make it easier to work with GHC from within the editor. * Initial support for TextMate-style snippet support. * Various Pango UI improvements (e.g. horizontal scrolling support and improved support for tabs). * Various parser improvements, especially for the Haskell and JS parsers. * Replaced HConf with Dyre, which handles xmonad-style configs and recompiles. * Upgrade to VTY 4.0, which has large speed improvements. * Many, many optimizations. Yi 0.6.2.2 is on Hackage here: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/yi-0.6.2.2 -- Jeff Wheeler Undergraduate, Electrical Engineering University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

FYI: Assistant Prof. position in FP@Chalmers (deadline 2010-04-25)
by Patrik Jansson 23 Mar '10

23 Mar '10

Come and work with us! The Chalmers CSE department is recruiting an Assistant Professor to work on Functional Programming. Details are here http://www.chalmers.se/cse/EN/news/vacancies/positions/assistant-professor-… and below. Welcome! Patrik Jansson, Koen Claessen, Mary Sheeran, John Hughes ------------------------- The functional programming group consists of 5 senior researchers, 5 post-docs, and 7 doctoral students, and recently got a 4-year grant supporting research in the development and application of domain-specific languages (DSLs). Examples of our previous work in this area are Lava, a language for hardware description and verification, QuickCheck, a DSL for specifying and testing programs and PolyP, a language for generic functional programming. Examples of our current work are a language for digital signal processing (called Feldspar, which is developed together with Ericsson), a language for high-level micro-architecture exploration (called Chalk, which is developed together with Intel), a language for GPU programming (called Obsidian) and a language for computational vulnerability assessment (developed together with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research). Generic programming is a paradigm we actively use in the development of DSLs. Our goals for the coming four years are: * to develop theories and tools that make future DSELs easier to design, implement, and use. Concretely, we aim for making reusable, generic libraries that capture common aspects occurring in many DSELs, such as symbolic simulation and error messages. * to develop high-level specification, testing and verification methods, using QuickCheck and automated theorem proving techniques. Concretely, we aim to mine specifications from test results, select test data distributions based on code-centric feedback, and make an empirical evaluation of "property-first software development". All this will be done in the context of the concrete DSELs the group is already working on but the overall goal is to raise the level of abstraction in software development and verification, by leveraging the power of functional programming – at least in limited domains. Job description The position as assistant professor is a full-time four-year position, preparing for future research assignments in academia or elsewhere. Assistant professors are expected to attain the docent level during the latter part of the four-year position. The employment consists of two two-year contracts. After the first two years, a performance evaluation is carried out. While this is a position for a limited time, the policy of the department is to strive at offering permanent positions at the end of the employment. As assistant professor you are expected to drive part of the research activities at our department in the area of functional programming. You are expected to be involved in PhD student advising, and in supervision of MSc thesis workers. You are also expected to be active in your own research and to prepare applications for new projects, as well as to promote the continuation of ongoing projects. Lecturing at the bachelors or masters levels is also included in the position, although normally not more than about 20% of total working time is devoted to undergraduate teaching. http://www.chalmers.se/cse/EN/news/vacancies/positions/assistant-professor-… ----------- Note that there is also a related PhD student position (deadline 2010-04-07) http://www.chalmers.se/cse/EN/news/vacancies/positions/phd-student-position…

More details to follow via the website. SUMMER SCHOOL There will be a two-day summer-school preceding the main conference on the 14 and 15 August. The summer school will give a broad overview of software verification techniques, addressing both bottom-up and top-down approaches with a strong focus on the formal representation and reasoning themes. The school consists of eight introductory lectures, each concentrating on an unique aspect of one or both of the overall themes. The topics of the lectures include inductive theorem proving; SAT and SMT solving; proof planning and rippling; rely/guarantee conditions; separation logic; operating system verification; and formal analysis of security. The school is intended for PhD students and researchers working within one or both of these themes, however familiarity with any of the techniques is not a prerequisite. All lectures are meant to be introductory. For more information see: http://dream.inf.ed.ac.uk/events/ssfrr-2010/ COMPETITION A verification competition will be held at VSTTE 2010. The challenge is to develop a machine-verified piece of software with respect to a given specification. The competition will be conducted over a 2.5 hour period on some evening of the conference. The problem will be presented with a logical specification and test cases over .5 hours including time for discussion with 2 hours to construct a solution. Each competing team can feature up to three members. You can use any tool or combination of tools as well as libraries, but you cannot modify these tools. You can reinterpret the specification to suit your tools and methods, but you will be judged on the fidelity of your interpretation. The goal is to produce an executable program and a replayable proof that the program meets the specification. It will be possible to code the solution using integers and arrays. The solutions will be judged for soundness (absence of bugs) and completeness (presence of proofs). The three best solutions will be selected and the respective teams will be invited to make presentations at the tools/experiments workshop. You must register a copy of the verification system with the judges prior to the competition with instructions for replaying proofs and running the programs. Announce: Haskell Platform 2010.1.0.0 (beta) release
by Don Stewart 22 Mar '10

22 Mar '10

Live from (post-) Zurihac, I'm pleased to announce the 2010.1.0.0 (beta branch) release of the Haskell Platform, supporting GHC 6.12. http://hackage.haskell.org/platform/ The Haskell Platform is a comprehensive, robust development environment for programming in Haskell. For new users the platform makes it trivial to get up and running with a full Haskell development environment. For experienced developers, the platform provides a comprehensive, standard base for commercial and open source Haskell development that maximises interoperability and stability of your code. The 2010.1.0.0 release is a beta release for the GHC 6.12 series of compilers. It currently doesn't provide a Windows installer (which defaults to GHC 6.10.4 for now). We expect to make the stable branch with GHC 6.12.2 in soon. This release includes a binary installer for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, as well as source bundles for an Unix system, and a new design. The Haskell Platform would not have been possible without the hard work of the Cabal development team, the Hackage developers and maintainers, the individual compiler, tool and library authors who contributed to the suite, and the distro maintainers who build and distribute the Haskell Platform. Thanks! -- Don (for The Platform Infrastructure Team)

ANN: Three package announcements
by Mario Blažević 22 Mar '10

22 Mar '10

There are three new packages on Hackage: - monad-parallel 0.5 (http://hackage.haskell.org/package/monad-parallel) - monad-coroutine 0.5 (http://hackage.haskell.org/package/monad-coroutine) - Streaming Component Combinators 0.5 (http://hackage.haskell.org/package/scc) The first two packages are completely new. Their functionality has been present in SCC 0.4, but I thought they might be useful on their own. I'm keeping all the version numbers in sync for now, and the source code for all three packages is in a single Darcs repository at http://code.haskell.org/SCC/. The monad-parallel library defines two Monad subclasses, MonadParallel and MonadFork, that enable monadic computations to be executed in parallel and their results combined. The library also exports a subset of the Control.Monad interface (ap, sequence, and related functions), adjusted to exploit the parallelism. The only currently defined MonadParallel instances are IO, Maybe, [], and Identity. More instances could be added, but I didn't want the package to depend on MTL or transformers. The library design was heavily influenced by the discussion in this Cafe thread: http://www.mail-archive.com/haskell-cafe@haskell.org/msg68581.html The monad-coroutine package exports a generic monad transformer Coroutine: Functor s => MonadTrans (Coroutine s). A Coroutine-transformed monad can suspend at any point, returning its resumption wrapped in the functor s. There are also some functions for manipulating and running coroutines, as well as a couple of useful suspension functors such as Yield and Await. Finally, version 0.5 of Streaming Component Combinators (a.k.a. SCC) comes with some significant code refactoring (as the two aforementioned packages prove), simplifications, and performance enhancements. No new features have been added since the 0.4 release.
