PRELIMINARY CALL for PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCEMENT of WORKSHOPS and TUTORIALS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4th International Conference on Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE'05) Sep 29 - Oct 1, 2005, Tallinn (Estonia) http://www.gpce.org/05 Sponsored by ACM SIGPLAN, in cooperation with ACM SIGSOFT co-located with ICFP'05 and TFP'05 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Consult http://www.gpce.org/05 for UP-TO-DATE and DETAILED information especially the calls for workshop contributions FORTHCOMING: on-line registration should become active in mid June ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES * Jun 13, 2005: suggested deadline for workshop contributions (please check on workshop web pages for details) * Jul 29, 2005: EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE * Sep 27-28, 2005: GPCE workshops and tutorials * Sep 29 - Oct 1, 2005: GPCE papers and demos ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOPE. Generative and component approaches have the potential to revolutionize software development in a similar way as automation and components revolutionized manufacturing. Generative Programming (developing programs that synthesize other programs), Component Engineering (raising the level of modularization and analysis in application design), and Domain-Specific Languages (elevating program specifications to compact domain-specific notations that are easier to write and maintain) are key technologies for automating program development. GPCE arose as a joint conference, merging the conference on Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering (GCSE) and the workshop on Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation (SAIG). The goal of GPCE is to provide a meeting place for researchers and practitioners interested in cutting edge approaches to software development. We aim to foster further cross-fertilization between the software engineering research community and the programming languages community, in addition to supporting the original research goals of both the GCSE and the SAIG communities. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 INVITED SPEAKERS: * Oscar Nierstrasz: Object-oriented reengineering patterns * Oege de Moor: TBA * Bernd Fischer: Certifiable generative programming 25 TECHNICAL PAPERS (see conference web page for the list of accepted papers) 2 DEMONSTRATIONS: * Developing Dynamic and Adaptable Applications with CAM/DAOP: a Virtual Office Application * Metamodeling made easy - MetaEdit+ 3 TUTORIALS T1: Multi-stage Programming in MetaOCaml (Presenters: W.Taha, C.Calcagno) T2: Implementing Domain-Specific Modelling Languages and Generators (Presenters: R.Pohjonen and J-P.Tolvanen) T3: Challenges and Best Practices of Generative Software Engineering in the Context of Large Complex Business Applications (Presenter: M.M.Davydov) 3 WORKSHOPS W1: Seventh Young Researchers Workshop (Organizers: D.R.Dechow, D.Foetsch, S.Kiebusch, S.Perugini, M.J.Rutherford, D.Shestakov) W2: Second MetaOCaml Workshop (Organizers: K.Swadi, W.Taha) W3: Graph and Model Transformations Workshop (Organizers: G.Karsai, G.Taentzer) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PROGRAM COMMITTEE Chairs: * Robert Glück (U. of Copenhagen) * Michael Lowry (NASA) Members: * Don Batory (U. of Texas, USA) * Ira Baxter (Semantic Designs) * Cristiano Calcagno (Imperial College) * Prem Devanbu (U. of California at Davis) * Ulrich Eisenecker (U. of Leipzig) * Tom Ellman (Vassar College) * Robert Filman (NASA) * Zhenjiang Hu (U. of Tokyo) * Patricia Johann (Rutgers U.) * John Launchbury (Galois) * Anne-Françoise Le Meur (U. of Sci. and Tech. Haskell workshop 2005: final call for papers
by Daan Leijen 31 May '05

31 May '05

Final call for papers, with still two working weeks to go: 2005 Haskell Workshop Tallinn, Estonia, 30 September, 2005 http://www.cs.uu.nl/~daan/hw2005 Final Call for papers -- Important Dates --------------------------------------------------- Submission deadline : June 10 Acceptance notification: July 5 Final version due : July 19 Haskell workshop : September 30 -- The Haskell Workshop ---------------------------------------------- The Haskell Workshop 2005 is an ACM SIGPLAN sponsored workshop affiliated with the 2005 International Conference on Functional Programming (ICFP). Previous Haskell Workshops have been held in La Jolla (1995), Amsterdam (1997), Paris (1999), Montreal (2000), Firenze (2001), Pittsburgh (2002), Uppsala (2003), and Snowbird (2004). -- Scope ------------------------------------------------------------- The purpose of the Haskell Workshop is to discuss experience with Haskell, and future developments for the language. The scope of the workshop includes all aspects of the design, semantics, theory, application, implementation, and teaching of Haskell. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Language Design, with a focus on possible extensions and modifications of Haskell as well as critical discussions of the status quo; * Theory, in the form of a formal treatment of the semantics of the present language or future extensions, type systems, and foundations for program analysis and transformation; * Implementations, including program analysis and transformation, static and dynamic compilation for sequential, parallel, and distributed architectures, memory management as well as foreign function and component interfaces; * Tools, in the form of profilers, tracers, debuggers, pre-processors, and so forth; * Applications, Practice, and Experience, with Haskell for scientific and symbolic computing, database, multimedia and Web applications, and so forth as well as general experience with Haskell in education and industry; * Functional Pearls, being elegant, instructive examples of using Haskell. Papers in the latter two categories need not necessarily report original research results; they may instead, for example, report practical experience that will be useful to others, re-usable programming idioms, or elegant new ways of approaching a problem. The key criterion for such a paper is that it makes a contribution from which other practitioners can benefit. It is not enough simply to describe a program! If there is sufficient demand, we will try to organise a time slot for system or tool demonstrations. If you are interested in demonstrating a Haskell related tool or application, please send a brief demo proposal to the program chair (daan(a)cs.uu.nl) -- Submissions ------------------------------------------------------- Authors should submit papers in postscript or portable document format (pdf), formatted for A4 paper, to Daan Leijen (daan(a)cs.uu.nl) The length should be restricted to 12 pages in standard ACM SIG proceedings format. In particular, LaTeX users should use the most recent sigplan proceedings style available from the Haskell workshop web-site. Furthermore, the "abbrv" style should be used for the bibliography. Accepted papers are published by the ACM and appear in the ACM digital library. Each paper should explain its contributions in both general and technical terms, clearly identifying what has been accomplished, explaining why it is significant, and comparing it with previous work. Authors should strive to make the technical content of their papers understandable to a broad audience. -- Program committee ------------------------------------------------- Martin Erwig Oregon State University John Hughes Chalmers University of Technology Mark Jones OGI School of Science and Engineering at OHSU Ralf Lämmel Microsoft Corp. PPrint license
by Samuel Bronson 30 May '05

30 May '05

I was messing around with some pretty printing stuff in Pugs, and I got tired of Text.PrettyPrint.HughesPJ, and wound up wanting to use PPrint. But I don't see any license anywhere for it, so I'm naturally a bit hessitant to stick it in the Pugs svn tree... Anybody know anything about this? -- thanks, Sam

signification of RWS and RWST
by Wolfgang Jeltsch 30 May '05

30 May '05

Hello, why do we have RWS and RWST in the libaries? Isn't RWS r w s a isomorphic to ReaderT r (StateT s (Writer w a)) and RWST r w s m isomorphic to ReaderT r (StateT s (WriterT w m a))? Best wishes, Wolfgang

standard monads and strictness
by Wolfgang Jeltsch 30 May '05

30 May '05

Hello, I looked at the implementation of Writer, WriterT, State, StateT, RWS and RWST. They all use tuples to knit the result with the written value and/or state. Now, there seems to be an inconsistency between the transformer and non-transformer variants concerning strictness. The non-transformer variants (Writer, State and RWS) use let binding to extract the tuple components while the transformer variants use pattern matching in do expressions. So the expression evalState (undefined >> return ()) () yields () while evalStateT (undefined >> return ()) () yields _|_ for any inner monad. Is there any good reason for this behaviour? Since the tuples are only used for knitting together several values, the most logical solution would be to use unboxed tuples in all of the above cases, in my opinion. If this is not feasible, we probably should use lazy pattern matching with the transformer versions. Best wishes, Wolfgang

2005 ICFP Programming Contest
by Robby Findler 29 May '05

29 May '05

Think your favorite programming language is the best one out there? Put it to the test in this year's International Conference on Functional Programming's annual Programming Contest. The contest is coming up in a little under 4 weeks and we have just released more information (including a live cd, mailing list, and prize details) to the web page, at: http://icfpc.plt-scheme.org/ This year's competition rewards programmers who can plan ahead. As before, we'll announce a problem and give you three days to solve it. Two weeks later, we'll announce a change to the problem specification and give you one day to adapt your program to the new spec. And you guessed it: the second half will be worth considerably more than the first. Important dates: Problem announced: Friday, June 24th, 9:00am CDT (UTC-6) Initial entries due: Monday, June 27th, 9:00am CDT (UTC-6) Revision announced: Saturday, July 9th, 9:00am CDT (UTC-6) Final entries due: Sunday, July 10th, 9:00am CDT (UTC-6) ICFP Contest Organizers icfpc(a)plt-scheme.org
