idea's for a 3D modeller in Haskell
by Kenneth Hoste 28 May '05

28 May '05

Hello, I'm planning to start up a project to build a 3D modelling application in Haskell. I don't know which direction I would want to follow, hence this mail. I've set up a small wiki page @ http://haskell.org/hawiki/H3D. I'm looking for neat idea's, existing projects, articles, suggestions, anything that could help me getting in some direction. Currently, I'm considering using L-systems as a base, and maybe use Ogre3D as rendering engine. Feel free to add anything to the wiki or to reply. boegel

27 May '05

Here's a job advert for a functional programmer to work at Credit Suisse First Boston. Nowadays, banks are doing lots of interesting things with computers, and they are pretty knowledgeable about programming languages too. This modelling and analytics group, who I know slightly, are specifically looking for someone who knows functional programming. It looks like an interesting job, so I'm taking the liberty of spamming the Haskell and Caml mailing lists. Simon Credit Suisse First Boston is looking to recruit a Computer Scientist for the Global Modelling and Analytics Group in the Securities Division. The plans: To use functional programming concepts to: evaluate financial models in a distributed environment. develop domain specific language tools to increase productivity in the creation of financial models. What we are looking for: An outstanding individual from an academic or research background for a position in New York or London. Prior financial experience is not required. The key attributes that are sought: An advanced degree with high honours in Computer Science or Mathematics. Parallel and distributed functional programming expertise. Experience writing compilers. Scientific programming experience, preferably C++. Interest in using academic ideas in a real world environment. Excellent communication skills in order to convey new ideas to our modelling team. ANNOUNCE: lambdabot 3.0
by dons＠cse.unsw.edu.au 27 May '05

27 May '05

I'm pleased to announce the release of lambdabot 3.0. lambdabot is a stable, feature rich IRC bot based on a dynamic plugin framework. 98% of lambdabot is dynamically loaded over a static core. Lambdabot also features persistent state -- knowledge accumulated during an irc session is not lost if the program is restarted. lambdabot comes with a suite of more than two dozen plugins, including: * a Haskell interpreter * a lambda calculus interpreter * a pointfree code refactorer * a Haskell type inference plugin * a Haskell library search tool * online help * a google interface * a babel translator * and many more lambdabot was written by Andrew Bromage, and is now a community project. lambdabot 3.0 would not have been possible without the help of the #haskell irc community -- this release features more than 450 patches from 14 contributors. lambdabot is available via darcs: darcs get --partial http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~dons/lambdabot More details are at: http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~dons/lambdabot.html -- Don Stewart

RE: [Haskell] HaskellForge
by Marnix Klooster 27 May '05

27 May '05

'lo all, Note that (1) SourceForge does not require use of CVS; and (2) darcs needs no special SourceForge configuration/tools to be usable. One can start with just storing the darcs repository (-ies) for a project on SF, and export it through SF's web space. You could also run darcs.cgi there, for just viewing patches. And you can easily put your own darcs binary on an SF server, so that 'committers' can push changes to the SF-stored repository. All this is quite easy to set up, without requiring special privileges. (And if a lot of people start to do this, then SF could perhaps start supporting darcs officially. I'd love them to, but it's definitely not required.) So frankly I don't see the advantage of creating a special HaskellForge, at least from a source control perspective. Beyond ASCII only editors for Haskell
by Mads Lindstrøm 25 May '05

25 May '05

Hi One of Haskell's advantages is that it is very suitable as an executable specification language. Which is also claimed on http://www.haskell.org/aboutHaskell.html: "Much of a software product's life is spent in specification, design and maintenance, and not in programming. Functional languages are superb for writing specifications which can actually be executed (and hence tested and debugged). Such a specification then is the first prototype of the final program." also on the same page: "Haskell, a purely functional programming language, offers you: ... * A smaller "semantic gap" between the programmer and the language. " But if I were to specify a program (in a non-executable language) or if I were to write some function on a blackboard, I would not be restricted to only ASCII characters. For example, I would not write 'sqrt 2' but I would write a square root symbol with 2 underneath. Likewise, I would not write '2 ^ 5', but I would write a 2 with a 5 raised upwards to the right of the 2. Then why are we stuck with the mono-spatial ASCII based editors in Haskell? Why is it not possible to make Haskell program look similar to ordinary math? (also when writing those programs and not just afterward in some Latex formatted paper). Also, programmers often use diagrams as specification. As Andrew Bromage says it in http://haskell.org/~shae/pseudocode1.pdf: "Mostly, I strongly suspect that most code of this type is not written, but rather it's translated into. I tend to see many uses of "point-free style" in the same light. It's also one of the reasons why I've resisted using arrows: You don't program in arrow style; you program in diagrams on paper, then translate that into arrow style." This makes me think that our diagrams should be compilable and thus executable? These diagrams could be embedded in our editor and intermixed with ordinary code. I have looked for the type of editor roughly outlined above, but found nothing. If anybody have some links to projects, which is related to these kind of thoughts please let yourself be heard. Also, of cause, comments are most welcome. -- Mads Lindstrøm <mads_lindstroem(a)yahoo.dk>
