HaXML incorrect interpretation of XML spec!
by S. Alexander Jacobson 28 Oct '04

28 Oct '04

The XML spec defines the prolog(1) as follows: [22] prolog ::= XMLDecl? Misc* (doctypedecl Misc*)? In other words you can have Misc before AND after the doctype declaration! HaXml defines the prolog(2) as: data Prolog = Prolog (Maybe XMLDecl) (Maybe DocTypeDecl) HaXml therefore does not allow PIs before the beginning of the top level element. This is a problem in practice for people who want to use e.g. XML-Stylesheets(3) where if one is using XSL to produce HTML it is necessary to put the stylesheet declaration BEFORE the root element (if the root element is not HTML). e.g. <?xml version="1.0"?> <?xml:stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="style.xsl"?> <foo id="57" category="2"/> Is there some way to puta PI before the root element in combinators? -Alex- (1) http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#sec-prolog-dtd (2) http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/fp/HaXml/HaXml/Text.XML.HaXml.Types.html#Prolog (3) http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-stylesheet/ ______________________________________________________________ S. Haskell XML
by S. Alexander Jacobson 27 Oct '04

27 Oct '04

I am looking at trying to produce XML with Haskell and it appears there are at least two dominant options: HaXML and WASH. I read some of the Peter Thiemann paper on the reason he chose a different architecture from HaXML but don't feel like I am in a position to judge the merits (and given the age of the paper) am not sure those issues weren't addressed in a subsequent version of HaXML. In reading the HaXML documentation, it appears to rely on DRIFT for some of its functionality. But I also undersand that DRIFT is being phased out in favor of TemplateHaskell. Is there a consensus on how to produce XML (from Haskell types) if one is starting a project today? -Alex- ______________________________________________________________ S. REMINDER: Contributions to the HC&A Report (November 2004 edition)
by Andres Loeh 27 Oct '04

27 Oct '04

Dear Haskellers, the deadline for the November 2004 edition of the Haskell Communities and Activities is approaching quickly -- but there are still a few days left to make sure that the report contains a section on *your* project, on the interesting stuff that you've been doing, using or affecting Haskell in some way. In particular, any information regarding upcoming, Haskell-related, events is highly appreciated (conferences, workshops, summer schools ...). Many FP research groups have not yet updated their reports. Furthermore, please have a look at http://haskell.org/topics.html * Is your project listed, but not yet updated? Please write a short update! * Is a project listed that you are no longer working on? Write up what you are working on instead, and tell me if someone else has picked up the project. * Is something you have heard about not in the list? Please let me know ... There is still time to write a completely new entry, on a new compiler, tool, library, company, user group, idea, ... -- as long as there is a connection to the Haskell language, there is a place for it in the report! Submissions are due by the end of this week, that is Friday, 29 October 2004. Please mail your entries to hcar at haskell dot org, in plain text or pseudo-(La)TeX format. I look forward to receiving your contributions. Thanks a lot, Andres (current editor) -- Haskell Communities and Activities Report (http://haskell.org/communities) 11/2004 edition submission deadline: 29 October 2004 <hcar(a)haskell.org>

Call for organizers: The 6th Advanced Functional Programming School, 2006
by Varmo Vene 26 Oct '04

26 Oct '04

Call for organizers: The Advanced Functional Programming School, 2006 http://www.cs.uu.nl/~johanj/afp/ We solicit plans for organizing the next Advanced Functional Programming School. Since 1995 there have been five Schools on Advanced Functional Programming in * 2004, Tartu, Estonia * 2002, LNCS 2638, Oxford, UK * 1998, LNCS 1608, Braga, Portugal * 1996, LNCS 1129, Olympia, WA, USA * 1995, LNCS 925, Baastad, Sweden ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The goals of this series of schools are: * Bring computer scientists, in particular young researchers and programmers, up to date with the latest afp techniques. * Use afp techniques in "programming in the real world". Bridge the gap between results presented at programming conferences and material from introductory textbooks on functional programming. The approach we take to achieve these goals in the schools is * In depth lectures about afp techniques, taught by experts in the field. * Lectures are accompanied by practical problems to be solved by the students at the school. The problems guide the students' learning to a great extent. This implies that there has to be a lab at the school site. * Group work is stimulated, especially because the practical problems will typically be too large for a single person. By functional programming we mean programming in a style that emphasizes the evaluation of expressions rather than the execution of commands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The lecture notes of the Advanced Functional Programming schools are published after the school, see LNCS 925, 1129, 1608, and 2638. The organizers are responsible for publishing the lecture notes. Please submit a proposal for organizing the next advanced functional programming school. Your proposal should include: - the name of the organizers (preferably more than one) - a programme: lecturers (a mix of young and bright, and old and wise lecturers is preferred) and topics (keep in mind that lectures have to be about "programming in the real world". Applications of functional programming are vey important for the school) - a location (remember you need around 25 computers) - a budget, including an estimation of the registration and hotel costs per participant. The programme, location and budget don't have to be completely fixed when you submit your proposal, but there should be sufficient information to review your proposal. Your proposal will be reviewed by the steering committee of the Advanced Functional Programming Schools, consisting of Pedro Henriques Johan Jeuring Erik Meijer Greg Morrisett Chris Okasaki Jose Oliveira Simon Peyton Jones Tim Sheard Doaitse Swierstra Tarmo Uustalu Varmo Vene Phil Wadler Submit your proposal to varmo(a)cs.ut.ee on or before February 1, 2005 Notification March 1, 2005

ANN: Hackage.
by Lemmih 26 Oct '04

26 Oct '04

Hey, For the last two weeks I've been playing around with the idea of a package listing page to replace (or coexists with) the current library page [1]. After some experimenting with different approaches, I've found that a Halipeto [2] like template system together with HaskellDB [3] would be acceptable. Then, after some hacking, the idea came to life in the form of Hackage [4], which currently supports adding, updating and searching based on Cabal description files. But my time is limited and it would be great if someone would tweak it into something useable.
