Haskell implementation of infixr and infixl/priorities
by Peter Theissen 25 Oct '04

25 Oct '04

Hi, I´m progarmming a parser for functional programs. Now I want to implement the infixL and infixR feature to increase the readability of the code. I would be very glad if anyone can send me some information about the implementation of this feature of the Haskell parser or where I can find something about it. Futher qurestion: Is it possible to define priorities for functions in Haskell? Any hints about that? kind regards & nice weekend, Peter Theissen Technische Universität Darmstadt

Syntax Q: How do you share RHS's in case expressions!?
by Ryan Newton 23 Oct '04

23 Oct '04

I'm baffled that I can't find anywhere in the documentation how to associate two or more patterns with the same right-hand-side... For example, in OCaml: match 3 with 3 -> 99 | 4 -> 99 Can be abbreviated match 3 with 3 | 4 -> 99 But I have had no luck figuring out how to do the same thing with: case 3 of 3 -> 99; 4 -> 99 My apologies if the answer to this question is blindingly obvious! --Ryan

Haskell in Trove Software Map
by Anders Höckersten 23 Oct '04

23 Oct '04

Hi, Apparently, I in June asked Sourceforge to add Haskell as a language categorization in their so called "Trove Software Map". I had forgotten all about this, but just received a mail that Haskell has been added. So anyone with a Haskell project on Sourceforge is now able to categorize it as such. I've added HaskellDB, but we're feeling kind of lonely right now. :) Anders

ANNOUNCE: GHC version 6.2.2
by Simon Marlow 23 Oct '04

23 Oct '04

============================================================= The (Interactive) Glasgow Haskell Compiler -- version 6.2.2 ============================================================= The GHC Team is pleased to announce the latest patchlevel release of GHC, 6.2.2. This is a bugfix release only, there are no new features. Code that worked with 6.2.1 will work unchanged with 6.2.2. A lot of bugfixes have gone into 6.2.2; we believe it is one of the most stable releases of GHC ever. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in testing pre-releases and submitting bug reports. This will also be the last release along the 6.2 branch, the next release (out "soon") will be 6.4 with plenty of new features. How to get it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The easy way is to go to the WWW page, which should be self-explanatory: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ We supply binary builds in the native package format for various flavours of Linux and BSD, and in Windows Installer (MSI) form for Windows folks. Binary builds for other platforms are available as a .tar.gz which can be installed wherever you want. The source distribution is also available from the same place. Packages will appear as they are built - if the package for your system isn't available yet, please try again later. Background ~~~~~~~~~~ Haskell is a standard lazy functional programming language; the current language version is Haskell 98, agreed in December 1998 and revised December 2002. GHC is a state-of-the-art programming suite for Haskell. Included is an optimising compiler generating good code for a variety of platforms, together with an interactive system for convenient, quick development. The distribution includes space and time profiling facilities, a large collection of libraries, and support for various language extensions, including concurrency, exceptions, and foreign language interfaces (C, whatever). GHC is distributed under a BSD-style open source license. A wide variety of Haskell related resources (tutorials, libraries, specifications, documentation, compilers, interpreters, references, contact information, links to research groups) are available from the Haskell home page (see below). On-line GHC-related resources ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Relevant URLs on the World-Wide Web: GHC home page http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ Haskell home page http://www.haskell.org/ comp.lang.functional FAQ http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gmh/faq.html System requirements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To compile programs with GHC, you need a machine with 64+MB memory, GCC and perl. This release is known to work on the following platforms: * i386-unknown-{linux,*bsd,mingw32} * sparc-sun-solaris2 * powerpc-apple-darwin (MacOS X) Ports to other platforms are possible with varying degrees of difficulty. The builder's guide on the web site gives a complete run-down of what ports work and how to go about porting to a new platform; it can be found at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/building/building-guide.html Mailing lists ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We run mailing lists for GHC users and bug reports; to subscribe, use the web interfaces at http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-users http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-bugs There are several other haskell and ghc-related mailing lists on www.haskell.org; for the full list, see http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/ Please report bugs using our SourceForge page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ghc/ or send them to glasgow-haskell-bugs(a)haskell.org. GHC users hang out on glasgow-haskell-users(a)haskell.org. Bleeding edge CVS users party on cvs-ghc(a)haskell.org.

CfP: Special Issue on PDMC
by Martin Leucker 21 Oct '04

21 Oct '04

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers Formal Methods in System Design Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Methods in Verification (http://www4.in.tum.de/~leucker/fmsd.html) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Formal Methods in System Design is seeking original manuscripts for a Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Methods in Verification, scheduled to be published in February 2006. The growing importance of automated formal verification in industry is driving a growing interest in those aspects which have a direct impact on its applicability to real world problems. One of the main technical challenges is in devising tools that allow to handle large state spaces. Over the last years numerous approaches have been developed. Recently, an increasing interest is in parallelizing and distributing verification techniques. Articles for this special issue are solicited that cover all aspects of parallel and distributed methods and techniques for formal verification. Theoretical results, algorithms and case studies are equally welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * parallel and distributed model checking * parallel and distributed equivalence checking * parallel and distributed satisfiability checking * slicing and distributing the state space * distributed theorem proving * distributed constraint solving * parallel methods in probabilistic model checking * file systems for distributed transition systems * parallel methods in performance evaluation * tools and case studies * industrial applications To simplify the publication process, we have a two step selection process. Authors willing to submit to this special issues are asked to send an extended abstract of about 4 pages describing the intended contribution. We will then select most promising abstracts and will ask the authors to submit a full version. The full version will then undergo a careful review process according to journal standards. Note that acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee acceptance of the full version. Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for journal publication elsewhere. As an author, you are responsible for understanding and adhering to our submission guidelines. Please thoroughly read these before submitting your manuscript. readList oddity
by Johannes Waldmann 21 Oct '04

21 Oct '04

recently I was surprised by readList's behaviour (I'm no implying it is wrong). Look at this: data R = R deriving Show instance Read R where readsPrec p cs = do ( x, cs' ) <- lex cs case x of "R" -> return (R, cs') _ -> error "no R" that is, we have a "very eager" parser: if it does not accept the token, it will raise an exception. now - which of the following will work? check0 :: [R] check0 = read "[ ]" check1 :: [R] check1 = read "[ R ]" check2 :: [R] check2 = read "[ R, R ]" turns out that check1 and check2 work, but check0 will not (I thought it would). The implementation (in the Prelude) seems to think that "]" (in check0) could possibly be the beginning of a list element. -- -- Johannes Waldmann, Tel/Fax: (0341) 3076 6479 / 6480 -- ------ http://www.imn.htwk-leipzig.de/~waldmann/ ---------

ICEIS'2005: Workshop on Ubiquitous Computing IWUC'2005
by KOUADRI MOSTEFAOUI Soraya 21 Oct '04

21 Oct '04

[Apologies if you have received multiple postings] CALL FOR PAPERS ________________________________________________________________ International Workshop on Ubiquitous Computing (IWUC 2005) May 24-25, 2005 - Miami, USA In conjunction with the Seventh International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems - ICEIS 2005 (http://www.iceis.org/ <http://www.iceis.org/> ) ________________________________________________________________ Workshop Background and Goals The development and availability of new computing and communication devices, and the increased connectivity between these devices, thanks to wired and wireless networks, are enabling new opportunities for people to perform their operations anywhere and anytime. Furthermore, due to the high acceptance rate of such devices by the user community, it is expected that these devices will become so pervasive that most users will take them for granted. Generally known as Ubiquitous Computing (UC), the vision of UC is to push computational services out of conventional desktop interfaces into environments characterized by transparent forms of interactivity. Despite the growing interest in UC, there is still some progress to be made before UC shifts from the research mode to the commercial and intensive use modes. The support technologies, however, are improving at an impressive pace. Most of the research and development activities are currently aimed at improving the devices themselves and the technologies these devices will use to communicate. At present, the main use of mobile devices is still voice-oriented, but several indicators show that this is changing. 3G networks (e.g., GPRS, UMTS) and recent development of communication and presentation protocols (e.g., XML, WAP) are being combined to give users a high-quality experience of data-centric services. Besides the central role that hardware infrastructure plays in the expansion and penetration of UC, other issues still need to be tackled to better assist developers of UC applications. Developers are put on the front line of satisfying the promise of businesses and service providers for delivering Internet content to mobile devices. Indeed, the fact that an application for mobile users has different requirements, calls for new techniques to identify and specify these requirements. With regard to users, it is expected that they will be frequently engaged in complex operations such as searching the net for better business opportunities. Therefore, their association with intelligent components, to act as proxies, is deemed appropriate. UC environments of the near future will be populated by a large number of computing devices, spread across the network, and often invisible. These devices need to be coordinated for better interactions. Devices, whether carried on by people or embedded into other systems (within the home or at other sites), will constitute a global networking infrastructure -- and likely to provide a new level of openness and dynamics. These interactions raise many new issues that draw upon existing research areas, as well as introduce new research and development challenges, in technical areas (such as device design, wireless communication, location sensing, etc), psychology (privacy concerns, attention focus, multi-person interaction, etc), and design (direct interaction, work patterns, etc). Existing global efforts in Grid Computing also shares some similarities with the aims of this workshop, although Grid computing at present is restricted to high-end computational resources. Making the Grid more open, and accessible to a wider range of users will also require the need to address similar challenges. Topics of interest In this workshop, we aim to identify ecent and significant developments in the general area of ubiquitous computing. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to: - Mobile computing vs. Pervasive computing vs. Ubiquitous computing. - Design methodologies and evaluation techniques. - New interfaces and modes of interactions between people and ubiquitous computing devices, applications or environments. - Grid Computing technologies for Wireless networks - Context awareness. - Agent-based ubiquitous applications. - Services for ubiquitous applications. - Middleware for service discovery. - Integration of wired and wireless networks. - Enabling technologies such as Bluetooth, 802.11, etc. - Security and privacy issues. - Visionary future scenarios. - Mobile services - Performance tuning of mobile applications Format of the Workshop The workshop will consist of oral presentations. The proceedings of the workshop will be published in the form of a book by ICEIS. Submission of Papers There will be two types of papers: long (approx. 5000 words) and short (approx. 2000 words). Furthermore, a keynote speaker and a discussion panel are planned. Postscript/RTF versions of the manuscript should be submitted thru ICEIS web-based paper submission procedure <http://www.iceis.org/submission/paper_ins_introduction.htm> . Summer School on Generative and Transformational Techniques in Software Engineering 4 - 8 July, 2005, Braga, Portugal http://wiki.di.uminho.pt/twiki/bin/view/GTTSE/WebHome SCOPE AND FORMAT The summer school brings together PhD students, lecturers, tool presenters, as well as other researchers and practitioners who are interested in the generation and the transformation of programs, data, models, meta-models, and documentation. This concerns many areas of software engineering: software reverse and re-engineering, model-driven approaches, automated software engineering, generic language technology, to name a few. These areas differ with regard to the specific sorts of meta-models (or grammars, schemas, formats etc.) that underly the involved artifacts, and with regard to the specific techniques that are employed for the generation and the transformation of the artifacts. The tutorials are given by renowned representatives of complementary approaches and problem domains. Each tutorial combines foundations, methods, examples, and tool support. The program of the summer school also features invited tool demos and a student workshop. As for the latter, all students of the summer school will be invited to give a presentation about their ongoing work. They will be asked to submit a title and an abstract beforehand. The senior researchers present at the summer school will provide the students with feedback on their presentations. All summer school material will be collected in proceedings that are handed out to the participants. Formal proceedings will be produced after the summer school. TUTORIALS * Don Batory (The University of Texas at Austin): "Feature Oriented Programming" * Ira Baxter (Semantic Designs Inc.): "Compiling Fast XML reader/writers from DTDs using Program Transformations" * Jean Bezivin (INRIA, LINA, University of Nantes): "Metamodelling and Model Driven Software Development" * Shigeru Chiba (Tokyo Institute of Technology): "Program Transformation With Reflective and Aspect-Oriented Programming" * Jean-Luc Hainaut (University of Namur): "The Transformational Approach to Database Engineering" * Zhenjiang Hu (University of Tokyo): "Program Optimization and Transformation in Calculational Forms" * Erik Meijer (Microsoft, Redmond): "Object, relational, and XML mapping" * Tom Mens (University of Mons-Hainaut): "On the use of graph transformations for software refactoring" VENUE The summer school will be held in the northern region of Portugal, known as the Costa Verde.
