FOAL 2004 -- deadline 19.01.2004
by Ralf Laemmel 05 Dec '03

05 Dec '03

(* This field has meanwhile seen a number of contributions from the functional programming community. So it is fair to assume that the present announcement is of interest for some subscribers of this list. *) FOAL: Foundations of Aspect-Oriented Languages A one day workshop affiliated with AOSD 2004 in Lancaster, UK, on March 23, 2003. Themes and Goals FOAL is a forum for research in foundations of aspect-oriented programming languages. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: * Semantics of aspect-oriented languages * Specification and verification for such languages * Type systems * Static analysis * Theory of testing * Theory of aspect composition * Theory of aspect translation (compilation) and rewriting The workshop aims to foster work in foundations, including formal studies, promote the exchange of ideas, and encourage workers in the semantics and formal methods communities to do research in the area of aspect-oriented programming languages. All theoretical and foundational studies of this topic are welcome. The goals of FOAL are to: * Make progress on the foundations of aspect-oriented programming languages. * Exchange ideas about semantics and formal methods for aspect-oriented programming languages. * Foster interest within the programming language theory and types communities in aspect-oriented programming languages. * Foster interest within the formal methods community in aspect-oriented programming and the problems of reasoning about aspect-oriented programs. Workshop Format The planned workshop format is primarily presentation of papers and group discussion. Talks will come in three categories: long (30 minutes plus 15 minutes of discussion), short (20 minutes plus 5 minutes of discussion) and very short (7 minutes plus 3 minutes of discussion). The very short talks will allow for short presentations of topics for which results are not yet available, perhaps for researchers who are seeking feedback on ideas or seek collaborations. We also plan to ensure sufficient time for discussion of each presentation by limiting the number of long talks and having only a few short talks. Submissions Invitation to the workshop will be based on papers selected by the program committee; those wishing to attend but not having a paper to submit should contact the organizers directly to see if there is sufficient space in the workshop. FOAL solicits papers on all areas of formal foundations of AOP languages. Submissions will be read by the program committee and designated reviewers. Papers will be selected for long, short, and very short presentation at the workshop based on their length, scientific merit, innovation, readability and relevance. Papers previously published or already being reviewed by another conference are not eligible. We will limit the length of paper presentations and the number of papers presented to make sure that there is enough time for discussion. Papers presented at the workshop will be included in a technical report (from Iowa State University). Authors will retain their own copyright to the papers. Publication of papers at other venues will thus remain possible. We will also investigate having a special issue of a journal for revisions of selected papers after the workshop. Authors should note the following details: * Submissions are due no later than 23:00 GMT, Monday, 19 January 2004. (This is a firm deadline.) * Authors must indicate whether they wish to be considered for a long, short, or very short presentation. * Papers for long presentations must not exceed 10 pages in length; those for short presentations must not exceed 5 pages in length, and those for very short presentations must not exceed 3 pages in length. * Some papers may not be selected for presentation, and some may be selected for presentation in shorter talks than requested. * We encourage use of the ACM Conference format for submissions, as this will be required for accepted papers. You must add page numbers (which are not part of the standard format) to your submissions, to make adding comments easier. * Submissions are to be sent as PDF (preferred) or postscript attachments in an email to Curtis Clifton, cclifton -at- cs -dot- iastate -dot- edu. We will notify the corresponding author of papers that are selected for presentation at the workshop by 9 February 2004. The early registration deadline for AOSD is 13 February 2004. FOAL attendees must be registered for AOSD. Final versions of papers for the proceedings will be due on 1 March 2004. For more information, visit the FOAL Workshop home page at http://www.cs.iastate.edu/FOAL. 04 Dec '03

[We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this announcement.] MPC 2004 7th International Conference on MATHEMATICS OF PROGRAM CONSTRUCTION ----------------------------------- http://www.cs.cornell.edu/Projects/MPC2004 Organised in conjunction with AMAST '04 12--14 July, 2004 Stirling, Scotland, UK CALL FOR PAPERS This conference aims to promote the development of mathematical principles and techniques that are demonstrably useful in the process of constructing computer programs, whether implemented in hardware or software. The focus of the conference is on techniques that combine precision with conciseness, enabling programs to be constructed by formal calculation. Within this theme, the scope of the conference is very diverse. We welcome contributions to programming methodology (for example, formal methods for program specification and transformation), to programming paradigms (for example, generic programming techniques and type systems) and to language design (for example, programming calculi and programming language semantics). Theoretical contributions are welcome provided their relevance to program construction is evident; discussion of applications is welcome provided the mathematical basis is evident. The conference will be organized in conjunction with the AMAST '04 Conference. There will also be a number of co-located workshops, including CMPP. Proceedings will be published in a volume of Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science. IMPORTANT DATES Deadline for submission of papers: 31st January, 2004 Notification of acceptance/rejection: 5th March, 2004 Final papers due: 26th April, 2004 Full papers should be submitted in Postscript or pdf format by e-mail to patwell(a)cs.cornell.edu by 31st January, 2004. ANNOUNCE: Hugs98 November 2003 release
by Ross Paterson 03 Dec '03

03 Dec '03

We are pleased to announce a new release of Hugs98, an interpreter and programming environment for developing Haskell programs. Sources and binaries are freely available on the World-Wide Web. (Contributions of binary packages for other platforms would be welcome.) Feature highlights of this new release are: - More of the hierarchical libraries, including imprecise exceptions and unboxed arrays, giving greater compatibility with GHC. For now, compatibility with the old libraries is provided by stub modules, but users are encouraged to migrate to the new libraries. - The Double type is now double-precision on most architectures. - The -e, -f, -i, -N, -W and -X options are gone, as is the :project command. - Integrated .NET support (on Windows). - The beginnings of a User's Guide (still somewhat incomplete). - Numerous bug fixes since the previous major release in Nov 2002. The home page for Hugs is at http://haskell.org/hugs. Send email to hugs-users-request(a)haskell.org to join the hugs-users mailing list. Bug reports should be sent to hugs-bugs(a)haskell.org. Send email to hugs-bugs-request(a)haskell.org to subscribe to the hugs-bugs list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Hugs 98 system is Copyright (c) Mark P Jones, Alastair Reid, the Yale Haskell Group, and the OGI School of Science & Engineering at OHSU, 1994-2003, All rights reserved. It is distributed as free software under the license in the file "License", which is included in the distribution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TPLP special issue Call for Papers [DEADLINE APPROACHING]
by Moreno Falaschi 02 Dec '03

02 Dec '03

CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue of Theory and Practice of Logic Programming on Multiparadigm Languages and Constraint Programming Guest Editors: Moreno Falaschi and Michael Maher Following up on a series of 11 workshops (WFLP) on multiparadigm languages and constraint programming, the journal on Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP) is planning a special issue on multiparadigm languages and constraint programming to appear in 2005. TOPICS In recent years much research and implementation efforts have been devoted both to multiparadigm languages and constraint programming languages. The aim of this special issue is to attract high-quality research papers on all aspects related to multi-paradigm languages and constraint programming, such as semantics, analysis, extensions, implementations and applications. Papers addressing how to use constraints for integrating different paradigms, or extensions of multiparadigm languages with constraints would be particularly welcome, although papers solely on multiparadigm programming or constraint programming are also of interest. Surveys and comparisons of constraint techniques and multiparadigm languages are also solicited. This special issue should hence stimulate the cross-fertilizing exchange of ideas and experiences among researchers from the different communities interested in the foundations, applications, and combinations of high-level, multiparadigm and constraint programming languages and related areas. Submissions Revised and enhanced versions of papers published at conferences that have not appeared in archival journals are eligible for submission. Papers describing important past research in this area which have not been published in archival journal papers are also solicited. For any doubt regarding the appropriateness of the topic of a paper for this special issue please email either to Moreno Falaschi (falaschi(a)dimi.uniud.it) or to Michael Maher (mjm(a)math.luc.edu) Papers should be written in English, and formatted using the LaTeX style files developed by Cambridge University Press for TPLP. To submit and for further information, please look at: http://www.dimi.uniud.it/~wflp2002/tplp/ Important Dates Submission December 15, 2003 Notification June 1, 2004 Revised paper due: November 1, 2004 Publication 2005

looking for System.Console.Readline example
by Johannes Waldmann 02 Dec '03

02 Dec '03

I am looking for an example program that uses System.Console.Readline http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/readline/System.Console.Readlin… If my main program looks like this: main = do input <- getContents ; handle input can I just "drop in" readline somewhere? -- -- Johannes Waldmann, Tel/Fax: (0341) 3076 6479 / 6480 -- ------ http://www.imn.htwk-leipzig.de/~waldmann/ ---------

haskell extensions question
by Diego Yanivello 01 Dec '03

01 Dec '03

hi, I am using the haskell extensions (in Hugs - Nov 2002) and I have some troubles with that. For example: class A a where a :: a -> String a = const "a" class B b where b :: b -> String b = const "b" instance (A b) => B b where b = a instance B () ----------------- In this case, Hugs says: ERROR "Test.hs":12 - Overlapping instances for class "B" *** This instance : B () *** Overlaps with : B a *** Common instance : B () but I don't have an instance "A ()" from which haskell can infer an instance "B ()". can somebody explain me that it is happening here? Thanks in advanced... Diego

ANN: H98 FFI Addendum 1.0, Release Candidate 16
by Manuel M T Chakravarty 01 Dec '03

01 Dec '03

Dear Haskell Folks, Release Candidate 16 of the H98 FFI Addendum 1.0 is now available from http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~chak/haskell/ffi/ Since the last version of the Addendum announced on <haskell(a)haskell.org>, namely RC12, the FFI Task Force decided on a slight generalisation of the interface to finalizers as well as the addition of some support for string marshalling for characters sets beyond ASCII. A detailed change log is at the end of this message. I'd like to propose RC16 as the final form of Version 1.0 of the FFI Addendum. If you find any problems with this version, please raise them within the next two weeks. Cheers, Manuel -=- Changes since RC15: * 6.3: Footnote regarding __STDC_ISO_10646__ added to text introducing `CWString'. Changes since RC14: * 6.2: CWChar -> CWchar * 6.3: - CWChar -> CWchar - Stated explicitly that memory allocated by `newCString' and friends can be deallocated by `MarshalAlloc.free' - Improved documentation Changes since RC13: * 5.3: Fixed typo * 5.7: Fixed a mistake in the type of `peekByteOff' and `pokeByteOff' (the type variable constrained by `Storable' must be different from the parameter of the `Ptr') * 6.3: Improved documentation Changes since RC12: * Acks : Added John Meacham * 4.1.5: Bug fix courtesy of Wolfgang Thaller * 5.5 : Added `FinalizerEnvPtr', `newForeignPtrEnv', and `addForeignPtrFinalizerEnv' * 6.3 : Added John Meacham proposal for `wchar_t' support as well localised string marshalling; in particular, this adds `CWString' and `CWStringLen' as well as the `CWString' and the `CAString' family of marshalling routines. In addition, `charIsRepresentable' was added.
