new grid layout
by Brian Lewis 17 Jan '08

17 Jan '08

Hi. I'm switching to xmonad from ion. It's really cool. I used to split my ion desktops once vertically. Then I'd split each half horizontally. So I'd have 4 same-sized rectangular panes. I used the vi keys hjkl to focus the one I wanted. There was no main window, there was no stack. I'd like an xmonad layout that worked sort of the same way. You'd add/delete columns and rows. In this way, you'd always have a grid, so no matter which rectangle had focus, it'd be easy to decide which should have focus after any of the four possible movements. For example, an 'empty' desktop has 1 column, 1 row. Adding a row splits it horizontally, so now there are 2 panes. Adding another row results in the desktop being split twice horizontally, dividing it into three parts. Adding a column splits it horizontally, resulting in 6 panes. The panes aren't all necessarily the same size; I don't know the correct way to state mathematically the type of partitioning this is. I find that focus model to be way more intuitive than wmii-style up/down. Also, stuff like remote irssis in other panes aren't forced to resize themselves just because I get rid of some other application. For example, if I close a browser in the left column of a 2-column, 1-row desktop, the left column just becomes empty. Nothing resizes. But I don't know if xmonad even likes the idea of empty panes. I'm just starting to learn Haskell; I'm really not up to coding a new layout right now. Someone save me? Thanks.

Debian packages for ghc6.8
by Joachim Breitner 17 Jan '08

17 Jan '08

Hi, I have updated the debian packages for xmonad and xmonad-contrib to be installable with ghc6.8. You can find them, together with the required version of haskell-x11, on http://people.debian.org/~nomeata/xmonad/ They will be included in the main archive once the bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=454440 (New version of haskell-x11 needed) is fixed. Greetings, Joachim -- Joachim "nomeata" Breitner Debian Developer nomeata(a)debian.org | ICQ# 74513189 | GPG-Keyid: 4743206C JID: nomeata(a)joachim-breitner.de | http://people.debian.org/~nomeata

Add systray support (to xmobar or dzen2)?
by Kai Grossjohann 15 Jan '08

15 Jan '08

I think it would be very useful if the standard bar had systray support, for else it is difficult to get the position right. This would mean adding the support to dzen2 or xmobar, I guess. I guess that most people will not have many icons in the systray, so that the systray will be fairly short. So I guess we do not want to waste a whole screen edge for the systray. Therefore the systray should be on the same screen edge as the other informational windows, and this means dzen2 or xmobar, for xmonad users. And trying to position both dzen2/xmobar and stalonetray (say) on the same screen edge is really difficult. Kai

new contrib module: XMonad.Layout.Reflect
by Brent Yorgey 15 Jan '08

15 Jan '08

Hi all, I've long thought it silly that we have a way to flip layouts on the diagonal (Mirror), but not a way to flip them horizontally or vertically, e.g. if you wanted the master pane on the right with a Tall layout. However, I didn't particularly feel the need for this feature personally (no one else did either, apparently) so didn't bother. Well, today someone asked how to do this (treadstone on #xmonad) so I thought I'd code it up for fun. It's quite straightforward and seems to work well (respecting any and all gaps, can be applied to any layout, etc.). I've attached a darcs patch; I'm intentionally refraining from pushing it since there's a code freeze on, but figured I'd send it to the list so anyone who likes can test it out (if you don't know how to apply a patch -- just save it somewhere, cd into the XMonadContrib directory, and 'darcs apply /path/to/patch'). Questions, comments, and patches welcome. -Brent

Mouse support in xmonad
by Maurício 15 Jan '08

15 Jan '08

Hi, Would it be possible to control the mouse using control keys from xmonad? I do imagine some functions a few keys could do that could make mouse control efficient, but I don't know if it's actually possible to do that (I understand nothing about X). Thanks, Maurício
