Issue 125: Tabbed layout not working anymore http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=125 New issue report by v.dijk.bas: In the latest xmonad and XMonadContrib from darcs (Jan 30 2008) the Tabbed layout is not working as expected anymore. When I switch to the tabbed layout I just get what looks like a Full layout but no tabs! I see that the implementation of Tabbed is changed and now uses the XMonad.Layout.Decoration framework. Maybe this has something to do with it? Also the documentation of Tabbed tells me to use the 'tabDeco' function which doesn't exist. So I think the following definition should be added: tabDeco = tabbed And remove the 'tabbed' function in 0.7 as specified. Right, the problem is in my client software - Thunderbird. Restricting mouse wheel bindings to a particular window

I've just started digging into xmonad a bit and it seems pretty cool, but there's one thing I haven't been able to figure out thus far. In wmii I have a pretty nifty setup where I can use the mouse wheel on the bar at the bottom of the screen to switch tags (workspaces in xmonad terminology). In browsing through people's configs on the haskell wiki I found some that have mouse wheel bindings, but they all seem to use a modifier in combination with the mouse wheel. What I would like to do is detect whether the mouse wheel event occurs in a particular window (dzen for example) and then do something based on that event (eg switch workspaces). Anyone have any ideas? Is this even possible? Thanks in advance. David Whittington

Hi Brent, list, I think the problem was with the extension I gave to the patch -- ".txt". Mailman then attached patch directly to the body of e-mail instead of providing link to the attached patch. This e-mail contains the patch attached as "xinerama_sort.dpatch" (only patch file name changed, content is the same as in xinerama_sort_darcs_patch.txt) . Anyway, what should be the proper extension for darcs patch files (the ones created with "darcs send -o file_name.ext")? tabbed and the way the new decoration framework works

Hi, Spencer just pushed a big patch to clean up my code a bit. He also broke Tabbed, since, probably, I was not quite clear on how the new decoration framework works. A decoration is a modification to a layout, now. And it is attached to a window. If there is no window, there is no decoration. This way we can decorate any window by just applying a modifier to a layout. This is done safely, since the modifier implementation as a layout (ModifiedLayout) is abstract, and we can guarantee that the ModfiedLayout behaves exactly like a Layout. By the fact that layouts may be modified only by layout modifier, we can be sure every modified layout will have a predictable behavior. There is a price to pay. If we want the decoration framework to be independent from the layout framework, we can decorate only windows returned by a layout. This means that a tabbed decoration will create tabs only for windows that have been returned by the underlying layout. Otherwise we must create a layout. So you choose: a layout or a layout modifier. They have different semantics. The LayoutModifier class together with the ModifiedLayout instance of the LayoutClass will perfectly map a modifier to the layout behavior, but they are different things. As you may understand this is the very very reason why I'm asking to change decoration :: l a -> String to decoration :: l a -> X String. If we have the second type I can write a LayoutCombinator class with a CombinedLayout that will perfectly map the semantics of a Layout. Pure and impure combinators will thus behave as layouts. If you do not give me that type, I'll be able to write a class the can map perfectly only pure combinators, and quite well impure combinators. This is a choice we can make: we like l a -> String? Ok, I'm going to write a pure combinator class only. As a side effect I'll stop maintaining (bugged) layout combinators that break at every API change.;) As I said, this is a change that has some quite deep implication. I tried to write extensively on that, *without* feedback from the other developers (well I had a go from David, who started all that). If you don't like this design we can quickly revert it. I don't really mind. It has been a pleasure this ride into type classes, because it gave me a completely new perspective on how extensible code must be written. I would like to thank David for that, since he pushed me in this direction. But I can understand that maybe the other developer may just think David's the one to blame... Wait! The new decoration framework has been pushed

Hi, I've just pushed the new decoration farmework, with the floating layout, the keyboard manipolation framework, and everything I've been talking about lately. I'll try to be as quick as possible in fixing bugs. I've also pushed the LayoutCombinator class. This is will make LayoytModifier(s) and LayoutCombinator(s) implementations totally independent from the Layout implementation. I'll write more extensively on that at a later time, also because I've already said quite a lot in previous messages. Hope you'll enjoy. Andrea
