I think that sending a Hide to the hidden layout should be just fine. Anyway, the best thing I can do is start porting other combinators and see if the class actually fulfills a layout combinator semantics. Any idea appreciated! Hi, this is a step forward in the direction of the type classes cleanup I've been proposing recently. The basic idea is to completely hide the Layout implementation to LayoutModifiers and LayoutCombinators. This way we can extend the LayoutClass without messing up the whole repository. This should also let us remove a lot of duplicate code and let the developers not to rewrite always the same stuff with high probability of bugs. This way we could also reject any code that has a (wrs,ml) <- doLayout in a LayoutClass instance...;) While there seems to be not much use for such a class (well, PerWorksapce, ToggleLayouts, MultiToggle, LayoutCombinators, the layout selector, and so on...;), while implementing it I had the feeling it could be quite a powerful tool. Imagine to run 2 layouts and then combine their results with pure code with "combineResult"... I don't know, but that could be fun. Still I have some troubles in implementing the handleMessage methond for CombinedLayout - and in deciding the type of comboHandleMessage. If we switch layout, the first one should receive an Hide. Should I take care of that in the class? In the instance? David, any idea? That following would be the implementation of a simple Toggle layout combinator. It works (sendMessage Toogle will make it switch), but I still have to find a clean solution to hide the first layout, otherwise decorations will be floating around d forever...;) Any idea? Let be begin by congratulating the xmonad developers on the release of version 0.6. I have been a delighted user since 0.4. Thank you for a fantastic product. I saw on the announcement of the 0.6 release that a new flag had been introduced: " --version: print *xmonad*'s version " Naturally, I tried it first thing after installing v 0.6, and was surprised to get the result "xmonad 0.5". I am left wondering what's up. I deleted the v 0.5 binary and seemingly installed v .6. If the flag is indeed new, then I must have v 0.6, and am seeing an oversight in a version number. Is that what I am seeing, or did v 0.5 also have a --version flag? David Cabana

You have to be really quick to close the window while xmonad is still recompiling itself. Looks like some sort of race condition involving state serialization? Open two windows (e.g. terminals). 2. Touch the configuration file (~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs) and reload the configuration by hitting Mod-q. 3. Close one of the windows while reloading the configuration. 4. Now xmonad seems to think there are still two windows open, even though we closed one of them. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? The expected output is that xmonad rearranges the still open windows, but it seems to think that there are more windows open than there actually are. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad 0.6 och Arch Linux. Please provide any additional information below. new decoration framework status

Hi, I've just sent a message about the nature of my latest (I hope not useless) code. This is a brief statu report: I checked and ported almost all instances of LayoutClass except: - XMonad.Layout.MultiToggle: I never used it, I don't have a clear idea of what is supposed to do so I'm reluctant to touch code I don't know. - XMonad.Layout.PerWorkspace: I've never used and I must confess I don't understand layout combinators very well, so the same of the above..;) But I'm sure Brent can do that in a second. - XMonad.Layout.ToggleLayouts: I didn't have time but I came to read David's code quite well (moreover I've already hacked David's combinators and ported LayoutCombinators), so that's very easy and I'll do that shortly (before pushing anyway). The rest should be just fine. The only incompatibility with old configurations is due to the fact that the type of the tabbed configuration has changed, and tabSize has been removed. "tabbed shrinkTest defaultTConf" is working fine, since TConf is not exported and I wrote the code to convert it into the new configuration. But it will fail in case of record update of defaultTConf, since fields are not exported (they would clash with the new decoration configuration system). The type signature of the function is changed too, but we do not usually invite user to write them down, so this should not be an issue. I tested XMonad.Config.* and they seem to be working just fine. I think this is it. Andrea
