Could you bring the patch up-to-date with latest xmonad > darcs? AFAICU, the patch is against XMonad-Contrib isn't it? I’m currently not following the xmonad development close enough to know what I have to adjust. Also, these patches have a bug (events are reacted on once per workspace, instead of once in total) that can not be solved without changes to the core. I asked for a clean solution (e.g. a hook for broadcasted events), but there was no reply from the core developers. So for proper EWMH-interaction, we need some help from them first. vlc -Iskins2 and empty space in stack
by Mikhail Gusarov 21 Feb '08

21 Feb '08

Hi. When running vlc -Iskins2 (both last release and trunk) with xmonad there is empty space in stack: xwininfo shows that it is root window instead of application one. Is this my local misconfiguration or reproducible behavior? --

darcs patch: Decoratione: generate rectangles first, and create win...
by Andrea Rossato 21 Feb '08

21 Feb '08

Hi, the patch description says it all. Before pushing I would like someone to test it too (I did all my tests here, with the strangest layouts, still I would like to have someone confirm this patch doesn't break anything). The fact of creating the rectangle first means that the decoration state is now: [(Window,Rectangle),(Maybe Window, Maybe Rectangle)] (the maybe stuff being decorations). As a benefit, now we create only decorations for windows that actually need a decoration. This is needed to let Decoration decorate decorated layouts more efficiently: with the previous approach decorating a decorated layout would mean creating decorations for decorations too, and, since decorations wouldn't get e Rectangle, they were hidden at a later time. (I hope my description is clear...;) Andrea Tue Feb 19 13:21:15 CET 2008 Andrea Rossato <andrea.rossato(a)unibz.it> * Decoratione: generate rectangles first, and create windows accordingly With this patch Decoration will first generate a rectangle and only if there is a rectangle available a window will be created. This makes the Decoration state a bit more difficult to process, but should reduce resource consumption.

decoration status update
by Andrea Rossato 21 Feb '08

21 Feb '08

Hi, today I pushed some final patches to the new decoration framework: - I adopted a more sophisticated approach for MouseResize: this way we can eliminate some restacking issues. Basically, we create the inputOnly window for intercepting mouse button events only if this input window will be actually visible; - the above also means that now we have the code to see if a window's rectangle is contained by a rectangle of another window: Decoration.isVisible :: Rectangle -> [Rectangle] -> Bool (see also isInvisible and isWithin); - Decoration styles will not decorate windows that are not managed (that is to say, that are not in the windows Stack): this means that you can decorate a decorated layout (see below); - I created a new style, TarBarDecoration, which can add a tabbed like decoration to any layout. The layout may be a combined layout too. A few examples: decoration shrinkText defaultTheme (TabBar Top) (resizeVertical 20 (Tall 1 (2/100) (1/2) */* simpleFloat)) which means: tabBar shrinkText defaultTheme Top (resizeVertical 20 (Tall 1 (2/100) (1/2) */* simpleFloat) will produce: http://gorgias.mine.nu/xmonadShots/tabbedlikeTallFloat.png (Tall 1 (2/100) (1/2) */* decoration shrinkText defaultTheme (TabBar Top) (resizeVertical 20 (Tall 1 (2/100) (1/2) *|* simpleFloat))) which means (Tall 1 (2/100) (1/2) */* simpleTabBar (resizeVertical 20 (Tall 1 (2/100) (1/2) *|* simpleFloat))) will produce: http://gorgias.mine.nu/xmonadShots/tallTallFloat.png DragPane may still have some issues (and so combinators like *||*). I need to check. I think that the decoration stuff is now working as expected. A few issues, and a few new ideas, are waiting for some new code, but I think we should be there. Please let me know if you think something really important is missing, otherwise we can start thinking about stabilizing everything for the release to come. Hope you'll enjoy. Andrea

DynamicLog improvements and new contrib module, XMonad.Util.Loggers
by Brent Yorgey 21 Feb '08

21 Feb '08

Hi everyone! Just a quick description of a patch I just pushed to the xmonad-contrib darcs repo. First, I cleaned up DynamicLog and added a bunch of documentation and examples -- getting a working status bar seems like one of the more difficult aspects of a typical xmonad setup, so hopefully this will go some ways towards fixing that. In another step to make setting up a useful status bar easier, I also added a new field to the PP record, ppExtras. This is a list of 'loggers', i.e. (X (Maybe String)) actions, which will be run each time the status is generated, and their output added to the normal window title + layout + workspace information. As an example of the sorts of things you can put there, and as a repository for useful loggers that people might create, I also added a new module, XMonad.Util.Loggers. The upshot of all this is that I used to have a separate script to get the time and date, battery information, and load averages, into which I would pipe the output of xmonad, and then pipe the output of that script into dzen. Now, I no longer have a separate script, I can just throw a few loggers in the ppExtras field of my PP format, and hey presto! Simpler, easier to maintain, and easier for newcomers to figure out. If you find the new ppExtras feature useful, I hope you'll create some new Loggers and put them in the Loggers module. And feel free to improve upon/generalize the ones that are already there. Ideally there should be a wide array of useful, configurable loggers that new users can choose from when constructing their preferred status bar. happy xmonading, -Brent

Issue 141: OpenOffice.org doesn't use GTK or honor any GTK settings http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=141 New issue report by brian.mbb: What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Start any component of OpenOffice.org in xmonad 2. 3. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Under Xfce4 (even with xmonad as a window manager), OO.o looks like a normal GTK application; the icons, font sizes and style is all honored. With xmonad, however, it looks quite horrendous and nothing at all like what it should. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad 0.6 on gentoo ~x86 Please provide any additional information below. This issue is also present under dwm. Searching the Internet has wielded little results, to my frustration. Also, I have no reason to doubt that this isn't a general Java issue, but I have no other applications to test it with. I've attached a screenshot showing the issue. It's quite horrid. If this error is due to a module from XMonadContrib, please tag this issue with 'Component-Contrib' below.
