There was a recent Arch-Haskell thread about dumping most of AUR Haskell packages: http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/arch-haskell/2011-November/001744.html As an end user, I effectively ignore the official Arch Haskell packages as they are so far out of date. I'm also now trying to disregard most of the AUR since I came across that thread. Haskell is starting to feel fragile on Arch. What about moving *all* Haskell related packages to the Haskell Arch repo? Latest yesod/mime-mail combination is broken?

Hi all, Is that latest Yesod + mime-mail broken or am I doing something stupid? I can install everything just fine but when I do > yesod init > Project Name: test > Foundation: Test > cd test > cabal configure I get Resolving dependencies... Configuring test-0.0.0... cabal: At least the following dependencies are missing: mime-mail >=0.3.0.3 && <0.4 However > pacman -Ss haskell-mime-mail haskell/haskell-mime-mail 0.3.0-3 [installed] Compose MIME email messages. Note the '-' in the third place where there was a '.' in the third place on the 'cabal configure' command. If I 'cabal install' mime-mail this only results in more confusion and breakage for cabal, as you might expect. > cabal install 'mime-mail <0.4' Resolving dependencies... (... Snip ...) And here we disagree :-) My impression is that there is no *testing* in HP at all, instead they choose the latest stable version of GHC and a set of packages at versions that fit together, sometimes they are the most recent most often they aren't. Some choices are even outright questionable, like OpenGL. IMNSHO haskell platform only makes sense for systems that lack a proper packaging system, where it makes available a convenient installer. As I understand "the Arch way" it means using the *latest* stable release. A good example of this is the move to python3. How to determine whether a package is in or out in [haskell]?

Now we have 300+ packages in [haskell]. It's starting to be a large set, and the time required to build when something changes is starting to really be felt now. So I would like to start a discussion on how we should decide what criteria to use when adding a package, and equally important, what criteria to use when dropping a package. My _impression_ is that additions have been a bit willy-nilly. Guided only by what the maintainers fancy at the moment. I also don't think that we've ever dropped a package, ever. I feel it's important to me to know that the resources I put into ArchHaskell is appreciated, and every added package increases the resources required. I therefore would like to know that each and ever package in [haskell] is there for a good reason. I feel I need to bring this up because there are a few packages in [haskell] that I suspect are there, but aren't widely used. To point fingers, the chief reason is Agda :) This is a package that has a mere 13 votes in AUR, and it takes more than an hour to build it on my laptop (about 70 minutes to be more precise). On each platform! So, what are our options when it comes to deciding what's in and what's out? Any thoughts? Haskell platform was released with the latest stable GHC (7.0.4 of course). Guys, what's happening with haskell support in Arch? Xmonad, and now GHC and lots of packages in the supported repos are not keeping update with upstream.
