The Haskell packages that are distributed in [extra] are built with '-p' by default, but none of the AUR packages are. The reason for that is that [extra] packages are downloaded in binary form, so build times don't matter much for the average user. Packages from AUR, however, need to be compiled on the user's machine. These builds are fairly expensive already, because every library needs to be compiled twice to generate static and shared variants. If we'd add '-p' to those builds, too, then compile times would go up even further. That seems like a fairly high cost to impose on everyone in order to get a feature that most people don't need. --- If you no longer wish to receive notifications about this package, please go the the above package page and click the UnNotify button.

New URL for the binary repository
by Peter Simons 09 May '11

09 May '11

Hi guys, I was informed by Kaiting -- who kindly hosts the binary repository on his server --, that the andromeda.kiwilight.com URL is considered obsolete. Instead, the binary repository should be configured as follows: [haskell] Server = http://www.kiwilight.com/haskell/$arch The old URL is going to work fine for the foreseeable future, but still the new one is preferable. Note that I dropped the previous use of "$repo" from the URL, too, to allow the binary repository to be configured under any name. Take care, Peter

Another tool for packaging Haskell
by Magnus Therning 08 May '11

08 May '11

Since Planet Haskell hasn't been updating for a long time I thought I'd point to a blog post of mine on a tool I've been working on for a while: http://therning.org/magnus/archives/914 It's something I started working on earlier this year, after it became painfully obvious just how much work it was to check dependencies when updating the packages in ArchHaskell. That was pretty much all it was good for then, but it proved to be a big time saver when used in concert with cabal2arch. Lately I've been working on integrating PKGBUILD generation, which basically means that a repo like https://github.com/archhaskell/habs can be replaced by a database and a set of package-specific patches. I still haven't gotten around to uploading it to Hackage, it needs some minor cosmetic changes (like a proper version number), but please let me know if you think a tool like this would be useful. /M -- Magnus Therning OpenPGP: 0xAB4DFBA4 email: magnus(a)therning.org jabber: magnus(a)therning.org twitter: magthe http://therning.org/magnus I invented the term Object-Oriented, and I can tell you I did not have C++ in mind. -- Alan Kay

Issue with -fvia-C and binutils 2.21
by Magnus Therning 30 Apr '11

30 Apr '11

I just thought I'd point out that the combination GHC 7.0.x and binutils 2.21 isn't very good when using -fvia-C: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/5050 There are a few unbuildable packages in HABS due to this. Cheers, M -- Magnus Therning OpenPGP: 0xAB4DFBA4 email: magnus(a)therning.org jabber: magnus(a)therning.org twitter: magthe http://therning.org/magnus Perl is another example of filling a tiny, short-term need, and then being a real problem in the longer term. -- Alan Kay

Any news about an update to the GHC 7.0.2 package?
by Leif Warner 21 Apr '11

21 Apr '11

The stripped libs in the current one is preventing the yesod executable from being compiled. https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23247?project=1&string=ghc I saw GHC 7.0.2.-2 is in testing, which is supposed to fix this. Would someone have an idea as to the time frame on this? -Leif Warner

HABS makeworld script not recognizing remotely built packages during makepkg?
by Leif Warner 21 Apr '11

21 Apr '11

I'm trying to build yesod 0.8.0 in HABS. When running makeworld, it says: "Not building haskell-failure-0.1.0.1-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz (already built)." It got that package from the repo. But then at the bottom, it fails with: ==> Making package: haskell-hamlet 0.8.0-1 (Wed Apr 20 06:39:01 UTC 2011) ==> Checking runtime dependencies... ==> Installing missing dependencies... error: target not found: haskell-failure<0.2 ==> ERROR: 'pacman' failed to install missing dependencies. Build failed, check /home/chroot-x86_64/copy/build I can fix this just by bumping haskell-failure's pkgrel, forcing it to re-build locally. But there ought to be a better solution? -Leif Warner
