documentation

Hi all, I have been away from [haskell] for a while while running on the haskell platform and cabal-install for all the extras. I recently wiped my computer, however, and thought I'd give the new arch-haskell system a spin. That said, I'm having trouble figuring out what exactly that system is. I already have ghc and xmonad installed from [haskell], but I'm having trouble figuring out the new way of installing packages which are not in [haskell]. I'm under the impression that cblrepo is involved in some way, however, I am not sure exactly how it is supposed to be used. Where might I find some documentation that could get me started? Thanks, Michael

how can I help?

I want to echo some of the sentiments of: http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/arch-haskell/2012-August/002126.html (I joined the list after reading that message.) I'm starting out doing Haskell development and am a long-time Arch user, and hence I am keen on keeping Arch Haskell up and running and working towards the all-of-Hackage goal. I think documenting process is a great idea, and I suggest you just go ahead and start pete, e.g. working on the wiki. Keep the mailing list informed, hang out in the IRC channel. I'll help out when and where I can as well. Cheers, Ramana

Script for adding and building packages
by Dominik Peteler 25 Aug '12

25 Aug '12

hello, I wrote a script for easily add new packages to my habs repo. I'd be happy if you have a look at it and tell me if my approach to building packages is ok or if I'm horribly wrong. Note that it's rather hackish and experimental. regards dominik

add haskell-yaml and haskell-svgcairo
by Linus Arver 16 Aug '12

Hello, Could the yaml [1] and svgcairo [2] packages be added to [haskell]? I don't have a particularly good reason why except that I use both packages in some of my pet projects. [1] http://hackage.haskell.org/package/yaml/ [2] http://hackage.haskell.org/package/svgcairo/ Thanks, Linus

What happened to darcs?
by gdweber＠iue.edu 14 Aug '12

I am wondering what has happened to the darcs package -- it seems to have disappeared sometime between November 6, 2011, and today. I know I installed it on Nov. 6, 2011, and I believe it was from one of the standard repos like [community] or [extra]. >From /var/log/pacman.log: [2011-11-06 15:56] Running 'pacman -S ghc emacs-haskell-mode cabal-install darcs gnupg' ... [2011-11-06 16:00] installed darcs (2.5.2-1.1) Today, my installed version of darcs is still 2.5.2-1.1, but when I search for it darcs with pacman -- # pacman -Ss darcs gives no result, and likewise searching in the package database finds nothing -- http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?q=darcs The latest I can find any discussion about it on this mailing list is from Thomas Dziedzic on 2012-03-03, ending with this statement: "*There is no cabal-install or darcs version that is marked as stable and currently builds with ghc 7.4.1 These packages are statically linked so it shouldn't matter for now. I will be keeping an eye on these packages and waiting for upstream to provide new stable versions that builds against the latest ghc." That seems to mean that the package would remain a package, only it would not be updated for a while. But in fact my search results seem to show that it is no longer a package at all. Meanwhile, darcs 2.8 is available, and is supposed to support GHC 7.4.x: http://darcs.net/Releases/2.8 -- Gregory D. Weber, Ph. how can I help?
by tam＠hiddenrock.com 10 Aug '12

My initial goal was trying to find an official-ish way to install vim plugins for Haskell, but poking around the mailing list and the git issue tracker(s), I get the impression that may be getting ahead of myself. So I ask: how can I help? I haven't found much documentation, and based on implications in the mailing list archives, it seems that the Haskell Package Guidelines [1] wiki page is out of date. Also, the habs README [2] says that current processes don't support providing ideal coverage of hackageDB. I hereby offer to organize and document a process for the Haskell Arch Linux repository. That said, if there are other things you think are higher priority, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. My opinion is that documentation is the single most important thing to encourage participation and contribution. One caveat, though: I'm not a Haskell expert, and have essentially no experience with cabal, so I might need some hand-holding, but hopefully it will be worth it. If the powers-that-be could weigh in, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! pete [1] https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Haskell_Package_Guidelines [2] https://github.com/archhaskell/habs/blob/master/README.md
