i have a problem, pls. can u provide me with the answers of these things.. thank you very much... a. Assume the language Pascal, C, or Modula-2. Give as precise bindings times as you can for the following attributes, and give reasons for your answers: 1. the number of significant digits of a real number. 2. the meaning of char. 3. the size of array variable. 4. the size of an array parameter. 5. the location of a local variable. 6. the value of a constant. 7. the location of a function. b. Discuss the meaning of the following statement, early binding promotes security and efficiency, while late binding promotes flexibility and expressivenes.. c. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of Pascal's declaration before use rule with Modula-2's rule that extends the scope of a declaration to the entire block, regardless of its position in the block. d. Describe the bindings performed by a Pascal Forward declaration. why is such a declaration necessary? e. Describe the bindings performed by a C extern declaration. Why is such a declaration necessary? vannex:) Join 18 million Eudora users by signing up for a free Eudora Web-Mail account at http://www.eudoramail.com

cvs commit: hugs98/lib/exts ConcBase.hs
by Alastair Reid 21 Apr '01

21 Apr '01

reid 2001/04/20 17:18:30 PDT Modified files: lib/exts ConcBase.hs Log: 2nd (and last) commit in this series. Added new MVar operations: tryTakeMVar and tryPutMVar. These have not been tested very thoroughly. We need one other change to make Hugs fully compatible with GHC: GHC recently(?) changed the behaviour of putMVar on a full variable. This used to raise an exception but now it's supposed to block. This is going to take a little pondering. At the moment, an MVar is: newtype MVar a = MkMVar (IORef (Either a [a -> IOResult])) That is, it's either full or it's a (possibly empty) queue of blocked threads. To accomodate the new semantics, it should change to something like: newtype MVar a = MkMVar (IORef (Either (a, [(a,IOResult)]) [a -> IOResult])) where Left (x, ts) represents a full mvar with a (possibly empty) list ts of blocked putters (and the values they want to put). Right ts represents an empty mvar with a (possibly empty) list ts which want to receive a value. Then we have to make putMVar block - with luck the mechanism used to block in takeMVar will work. And then we have to ponder the question of fairness: My original MVar implementation made no attempt to unblock threads in the same order as they had blocked. In fact, they could be unblocked in exactly the opposite order from the order in which they had blocked. At the time, I argued that this was the correct behaviour since it was so manifestly unfair that no-one was going to be fooled into believing that Hugs' "scheduler" was fair. I felt this was a good idea because it just wasn't possible to achieve fairness with a non-preemptive implementation and I'd rather have my code always fail than occasionally fail. But the moment my back was turned (:-)), the OGI folks made MVars fairer. I imagine they much have had a reason to do this ... Maybe I should preserve this fairness in the interest of not breaking anything. [Incidentally, a recent bug report on the ghc list suggests that ghc's MVars aren't fair either. This code: forkIO (mapM_ putChar as) >> forkIO (mapM_ putChar bs) where as = 'a':as; bs = 'b':bs will output either all as or all bs. It seems that 'mapM putChar as' spends almost all its time inside a mutex (protecting the stdout object) and that when 'mapM putChar bs' tries to acquire the same lock, it always fails. The GHC folk are considering changing putMVar (I think) to consider preempting if there were any threads blocked on the mvar. ] Revision Changes Path 1.6 +42 -1 hugs98/lib/exts/ConcBase.hs

cvs commit: hugs98/lib/exts Exception.hs
by Alastair Reid 21 Apr '01

21 Apr '01

reid 2001/04/20 16:42:56 PDT Modified files: lib/exts Exception.hs Log: This is one of two commits aimed at reducing the gap between Hugs-supplied libraries and their GHC counterparts. The ultimate goal is to make the fptools/hslibs libraries work with Hugs. Progress towards this goal: all hslib libraries work (== are loaded without error by Hugs) except those which use casm/ccall (net and posix) and the ffi-related hslib/lang libraries which are usually wafer-thin layers over the ghc Prelude code. (Commits to hslib have not yet been done - waiting for the hslib folk to give me the nod.) This particular commit brings Hugs into line with the very recent (and very welcome) changes to the Exception API and includes dummy (nullop) implementations of block and unblock whose use pervades the hslib libraries. Beats me why this was deleted from the OGI release. What were they thinking? To run tests: cd hugs98/src/unix ./configure cd .. make hugs cd ../tests sh ./testScript static tcheck rts libs demos Once you get bored of seeing all the successful tests (yahoo!), you can use this to restrict output to the failures: sh ./testScript static tcheck rts libs demos | grep -v '^--' [If I remember correctly, configuring with readline doesn't work. Also note that you have to rerun configure to build tests/testScript.] About the test harness ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The test harness is very portable. It even runs on Windows though you have to install perl and cygwin to be able to run the tests. The core of the test harness is the program runstdtest - a hacked up version of a similar script from the GHC distro. This runs Hugs over some input and compares the output against a file containing the "correct" output. Hugs generates a bunch of noise (banners, list of modules being loaded, etc.) before generating the interesting part of the output so we tell runstdtest to ignore the first N lines of output using the -s<N> flag. If you change the length of the banner or the module structure you will have to change all these -s flags (this is a bit tedious - better solutions welcome). About the test suite ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The testsuite itself is a little out of date. There was a time when it checked every single error in static.c but this is probably not true now. In particular, there are no tests which check the +98 errors. I have updated the sample output files to match current output except in cases where it wasn't clear if the current output was an error or intended behaviour. Here's a list of the potential errors that may need to be fixed. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Hugs used to detect an error in static/mod39.hs and no longer does. reid 2001/04/07 11:36:33 PDT Modified files: lib/exts Word.hs Log: The enum instance for Word32 suffered from numeric overflow. That is, these expressions: [maxBound .. ] :: [Word32] [maxBound .. maxBound] :: [Word32] should both have length 1 but the length seemed to be closer to 2^32 (I got bored before it got that far though). I'm not completely happy with my fix (it's a little clunky) but at least it works now. (If I was a good Haggis, I'd go look at how GHC, NHC and HBC handle this.) The Int instance suffers from the same problem but, in that case, the correct behaviour (at least for the first example) is probably to raise an error or to give an infinite list (which it does) not to give a finite list. 03 Apr '01

reid 2001/04/03 12:29:27 PDT Modified files: lib Prelude.hs lib/exts ConcBase.hs Log: When a thread blocks on an MVar, we have to take the complete state of the thread and store it in the MVar. This used to be easy because the state was all in the success continuation but exception handlers live on the stack so we have to unwind the stack making a list of all the exception handlers and store that list of exception handlers into the MVar too. This is done by returning a Hugs_BlockThread object. When catch sees one of these, it adds a Hugs_Catch into the object and returns Hugs_BlockThread again. Eventually, this gets up to the top thread loop which, finally, does the write into the MVar. Trivial changes: o Improved error messages if a forked thread ends in error or exception o Replaced the word "process" with "thread" in comments. "process" implies some measure of isolation (namespace, heap, file descriptors, etc.) whereas "thread" just impliues a separate thread of control. These are _not_ processes! [Hey, I work on operating systems these days - they're fussy about these definitions.] Revision Changes Path 1.8 +8 -3 hugs98/lib/Prelude.hs 1.4 +10 -10 hugs98/lib/exts/ConcBase.hs

This is called 'ioError' in GHC, because the Exception type is now a synonym for IOError (in GHC 5.00). This makes it easier to port code that uses IOErrors to use Exceptions - the Exception interface is just an extension of the existing IOError interface. Cheers, Simon

cvs commit: hugs98/lib Prelude.hs hugs98/lib/exts Exception.hs ConcBase.hs
by Alastair Reid 02 Apr '01

02 Apr '01

reid 2001/04/01 21:51:23 PDT Modified files: lib Prelude.hs lib/exts ConcBase.hs Added files: lib/exts Exception.hs Log: Even if the previous commits are bad, things should still work because I haven't changed anything in the normal evaluation path. This set of commits had better work though! Prelude.hs: There's now two kinds of exception: IOError and HugsException. IOErrors are propagated using the normal continuation passing mechanisms - exception handlers are chained together on the heap. (This stuff is unchanged. Changing that would require changes to greencard and every IO primop in Hugs.) HugsExceptions are propagated using longjmp, etc. Exception handlers are piled up on the stack. But, what happens when we have to do a context switch (e.g., a call to Concurrency.yield or Concurrency.takeMVar)? We have to remember all the HugsException catches so that we can restore them when we switch back to that thread. This is what Hugs_Catch is for - it remembers which exception handlers we have to reinstall on the stack when we switch back to the thread. (btw, The type names, constructors, etc. associated with IOResult, etc. really ought to be renamed so they have the word "Hugs" or "prim" in them for the usual namespace-contamination reasons.) ConcBase.hs: Some minor organisation and layout changes - trying to restore a consistent style. Also, forkIO has to make sure that every thread contains both an IOError handler and HugsException handler. new file exts/Exceptions.hs: A (very) cut-down implementation of GHC's Exception module. One big difference is that, because IOError handling is handled separately from HugsExceptions, we can't readily implement throw :: Exception -> a But we can provide throwIO :: Exception -> IO a (which I'll try to persuade the GHC people to ask to their implementation). The other big difference is that GHC's Exception datatype has many constructors for different kinds of errors. Implementing this would require extensive changes to any primops which can raise exceptions - lots of changes. So, instead, you get a HugsException and you can convert it to a string and, if you see fit, try to parse the string. I didn't add GHC's assertions - so they're left out. Adding Dynamic exceptions looked tricky and didn't seem like a pressing need so I left them out. Revision Changes Path 1.7 +32 -1 hugs98/lib/Prelude.hs 1.3 +14 -9 hugs98/lib/exts/ConcBase.hs

cvs commit: hugs98/src builtin.c
by Alastair Reid 02 Apr '01

02 Apr '01

reid 2001/04/01 21:24:13 PDT Modified files: src builtin.c Log: This is a bogus commit because I just accidentally committed all files instead of just machdep.c (and I can't remember the cvs magic to undo it). So here's what all those committed files did: interns.c: The old file interns.c (which is usually ifdef'd out) provides access to a bunch of Hugs internals. This provided a primitive: catchException2 :: a -> Either Cell a where Cell is an error object. The only change here is a fix to the implementation. It couldn't possibly work the way it was - which leaves me wondering what happened to it. builtin.c: Put a (fixed) copy of catchException2 here and added throwException data HugsException primitive primCatchException :: a -> Either HugsException a primitive primThrowException :: HugsException -> a Note that using these directly would break referential transparency. To fix that, one or the other (doesn't matter) ought to be in the IO monad. But there's difficult interactions with the thread implementation (that's what the fuss is about after all!) so we provide the unsafe versions here and wrap them up before exporting them. Incidentally, notice that these names (which have to be exported from the Prelude and so pollute the user's namespace) either include the word "hugs" or starts with the word "prim". printer.c: Added a primop for printing Hugs exception objects primitive primShowException :: HugsException -> String It originally had type: primitive primShowException :: HugsException -> ShowS but printDBadRedex ignores its second argument when printing error objects. In error messages, we should use a legal qualified name like IOExts.fixIO not IOExts:fixIO (Incidentally, because of the way fixIO is implemented, calling fork in fixIO won't work too well: the call to fixIO can't terminate until all forked threads terminate. New release
by Johan Nordlander 31 Jan '01

31 Jan '01

Dear Hugs authors, A new beta release of Hugs98 will be sent out within the next couple of hours. I'm writing to you to clarify what this beta status means. The group of people involved with the maintenance of the Hugs sources is now quite large, and if we also count the maintainers of all software packages that directly depend on Hugs, it's clear that the task of synchronizing all updating and testing that must preceed a new release is quite daunting. Therefore, by releasing a beta version today, I'm hoping to take a short-cut towards the goal of a stable February 2001 release, in the sense that everybody within the Hugs community will have a chance to react to the current changes. This means that there will still be time to polish the sources after today's release, so don't panic when you see the announcement. However, a beta release also means that we're actually freezing the list of features as it stands. That is, no more fancy additions will be considered for the February 2001 release. For purely nostalgic reasons, the target date for the final release is February 14. So please take the time to monitor this beta closely until then, and let the bug reports flow in to hugs-bugs(a)haskell.org. Or, preferably, make the necessary adjustments to the repository yourselves. All the best, Johan

We should work together on getting the FFI libraries into Hugs too, and sync up as much as possible. BTW, we're using (Ptr a) instead of Addr these days. Cheers, Simon

cvs commit: hugs98/src GreenCard.h connect.h hugs.c input.c parser.y static.c
by Alastair Reid 13 Dec '00

13 Dec '00

reid 2000/12/13 01:36:05 PST Modified files: src GreenCard.h connect.h hugs.c input.c parser.y static.c Log: Final commit in the series. Added +G flag to options in hugs.c. Lexer, parser and static checker additions. Note that foreign export (static) is not implemented. My problem was how to handle the following: plus x y = x + y foreign export "plusInt" plus :: Int -> Int -> Int foreign export "plusFloat" plus :: Float -> Float -> Float What I want to do is to define: __plusInt :: Int -> Int -> Int __plusInt = plus __plusFloat :: Float -> Float -> Float __plusFloat = plus then invoke the typechecker which will insert dictionaries, check that the instances make sense, etc. And now I can foreign export each individual instance with no bother at all. One problem is that ffi declarations are processed fairly early in the checking process - it's a bad time to go invoking the typechecker. Another problem is that I'm not entirely sure how to actually do the above. I think it should be like checking the bindings in an instance declaration but I don't quite grok that code. [This is a subtly disguised plea for help from Mark, Jeff or someone else who feels happy in the typechecker. (I'm assuming someone suitably qualified is on the commit mailing list.)] Anyway, enough about what if can't do. Here's what it can do: 1) Copy the following files into Test.hs and test.c 2) hugs +G Test.hs This generates Test.c 3) cc -shared Test.c test.c -o Test.so This generates Test.so 4) hugs Test.hs This loads Test.hs and Test.so 5) test (+) 1 1 This should print 2!
