WinHugs beta 2

Hi, I've now packaged up WinHugs beta 2, its at http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~ndm/projects/winhugs.php Since beta 1 I've fixed a pile of bugs and added an uninstaller, other than that its pretty much identical. I've packaged this up as WinHugs and MinHugs - a minimal version of WinHugs which takes up less space and has less libraries/packages. Since I hope that university students will be installing this on their machines to do their work, it needs to be small enough so it can be installed on their quota. C preprocessor + WinHugs

Hi, I'm looking into implementing C preprocessing in WinHugs. I've looked around and bundling a copy of cpphs seems like the best solution, since few windows users will have a cpp hanging around somewhere that can be found. I've hacked together a basic implementation, the only thing is that its a lot slower, mainly because its being run on every single file which is completely unneeded. Is there some way to detect if a hs file requires preprocessing? If not, its almost going to be better to stick with no preprocessing, and have a faster development environment. The ways I thought of were: * Add some magic to the parser, so that if it encounters a # at the start of a line, it bails out and restarts again after preprocessing. * Only preprocess .cpp.hs or .hscpp or some other special suffix as having cpp directives. * Look into the file for some sort of command line arguments pragma on the first line denoting preprocessing. WinHugs beta

Hi, I've compiled up all the WinHugs goodies, including the new installer, into an installable package. Its available at http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~ndm500/temp/WinHugs_2005-10-06.exe [17Mb]. If anyone wants to try it out, i'd be greateful to hear any feedback! http://www.haskell.org/hawiki/NeilMitchell/HugsNotes lists all the things that are "wrong" with it. The only big thing is no uninstaller, and since its installation is basically creating a directory, thats not so much of a problem (it can be uninstalled by hand with the delete key in about 10 seconds). Comments, complaints, bug reports all welcome. If you just download it and it all works fine I'd still be interested in hearing that. Thanks Neil

This increases the base installer size by 30Kb, but removes requirements on any dll's beyond those provided by standard windows 95 and above. It also toggles on a pile of size optimisations which get back 5Kb of that increase, so the end installer size is 55Kb, and entirely any windows compatible. Hi, Please remove winhugs/installer/installer.aps from the CVS, it appears to be a binary file which is purely a visual studio cache - if deleted visual studio recreates it. I should have not sent it to be checked in. The attached patch fixes 3 minor human user interface issues in the installer. It lays the checkboxes out slightly better, renames "..." to "Browse" and changes the text. No code changes. I talked to an HCI person. Thanks Neil

WinHugs, new installer

Hi, Attached is a new installer for WinHugs. Its custom written, and has been used successfully on Pingus for years [http://pingus.seul.org/] This version has some modifications. I have placed 2 screenshots at the bottom of http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~ndm/projects/winhugs.php The code is at http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~ndm/temp/installer.zip Advantages: 100% open source 100% customisable Registers Open and Edit via winhugs, along with a new document handler for windows. This removes the need for WinHugs/register Cat'able package creation (see how to create) 29Kb overhead vs just distributing a zip Can be opened by winzip, if people want Looks pretty Disadvantages: No cancel once you start installing, I don't think this is such a big deal, but it can be remedied with effort No uninstall, I will fix this before release, but again its not a massive problem since a winhugs install is pretty non-invasive Creating a package: Get a directory, as you want it installing Zip it up copy /b installer.exe + installer.zip winhugs.exe distribute winhugs.exe If you just unzip the linked file into /src/winhugs/installer it will all work perfectly. Once this is in, I'll put together a winhugs snapshot for people to beta test. I am now using WinHugs as my primary haskell development environment, and so are at least 3 others. Its solid and very useable. The code is C++. I would appreciate it if the formatting was not changed (i.e. tabs and spaces, bracketing placement) as then it will be easier to sync it with Pingus, since the code is already in their .svn. WinHugs, prettier file listings

Hi, On WinHugs, when you get a listing of all files loaded, each file is pretty long. Most of it corresponds to either the {Hugs} prefix, or the current directory prefix. This adds no useful information. This patch makes the listing replace the prefix with {Hugs} or . if it can safely. It also fixes up the editor loading to add this information back in. It also abstracts the filename outputting for Windows, instead of going down WinHugsHyperlink (which was a little bit unclean). Thanks Neil

Windows installer

Hi, I'm not particularly overjoyed with an approach which means the tools to build a release installer are not available in the CVS, as this kind of goes against open source (and more practically, it means I personally can't build test releases). I propose that either: 1) The tools used to make the current installer .msi files make themselves known to the world, along with appropriate documentation and scripts. 2) I (or someone else) writes an MSI file generator, probably using the free Wix toolset. 3) I (or someone else) writes an NSIS installer, which is an .exe installer based on the NSIS toolkit, Google seems to now use this as their preferred installer setup, so it can't be too bad. 4) I (or someone else) writes an installer from the ground up. Its not that much work, as I already have about 98% of the code from writing an installer from the Pingus project. The installer is a simple cat installer.exe data.zip > winhugs.exe installer, so it allows making an easy distribution from a zip file, even under Linux. Obviously 1 would be least work if feasible. If I was going to write an installer for the Windows build, which one would people prefer out of 2, 3 and 4? Does anyone use the large scale deployment options found in a .msi, and are those options even in the WinHugs .msi file? Thanks Neil

WinHugs, sensible defaults (II)

Hi, At the moment, WinHugs defaults to notepad as the editor. Notepad cannot open a specific line or char, which means its not great for using with WinHugs, much of the impressive bits of WinHugs become less useful. This patch makes it use any editor but notepad if it can find one, otherwise notepad. With this patch, and the auto-reload files one (sent previously) it would mean that the average WinHugs user does not need a trip to the options dialog before they are running WinHugs at its optimum. WinHugs and Unicode

Hi, The new version of WinHugs is not unicode compliant, and is unlikely to be in time for the release. While its relatively easy to change it to be unicode compliant, unfortunately a lot of the useful unicode functions are only available on NT/2k/XP, and some are 98/ME/NT/2K/XP, but not 95. Because of this, its going to be difficult to ensure that a Unicode WinHugs works everywhere, the main problem being testing rather than coding. I may start sending some unicode patches over, so I can get WinHugs building in Unicode mode, since these are ignored when compiling in ANSI mode. The other question is to what degree Hugs in Unicode compliant? Are filenames etc. unicode based, or is it just the interaction? Thanks Neil

Hi, There was a minor bugglet, not necessarily causing issues but certainly wrong. Its allocating an array with malloc(sizeof(Item) * Number), but Item accidentally refers to some totally unrelated structure because of a typo. Thanks Neil

I think that the problem that needed fixed in GHCi was different than the problem with Hugs. With the GHCi error, the Windows DEP error dialog box would pop up, (I believe) asking the user to report the problem to Microsoft, and providing a button that opened up the DEP settings dialog box. In the Hugs error, the Windows DEP error dialog box never pops up. Instead, Hugs just reports that it received an unexpected signal. The signal it receives is SIGSEGV. - Brian

Releasing WinHugs

Hi, With the patches that have been submitted, the bug list for WinHugs hits 0, see http://www.haskell.org/hawiki/NeilMitchell_2fHugsNotes . If anyone knows of any other bugs, or finds any, please let me know. If anyone thinks anything in the polish section is a bit more important also let me know. I think I'm ready for limited beta testing, so if anyone wants that also let me know. Also if anyone has any overall comments (I miss this, why did you change that, how do I do this, i can't see the use of that) I'd love to hear them. When does it suit to release WinHugs? It needs a bit longer for beta testing etc, but is a Hugs release being planned soon, or should WinHugs be released separately? How stable is the Hugs code base, i.e. is it release worthy? When I disable DEP for hugs.exe, these tests pass; when I enabled DEP then the tests fail. So, apparently the code that builds the thunks used for callbacks does not correctly set the executable/non-writable flags on the thunk after it is created. There was a very similar bug in GHCi/runghc that was fixed just a few weeks ago. I think the solution to this problem is probably simple for somebody familiar with the GHCi solution, or somebody familiar with the Windows memory management API's. But, failing a fix, we should at least note this problem in the release notes, and the installer should automatically disable DEP for hugs.exe, runhugs.exe, and WinHugs.exe. Hi, I read the documentation in docs/buiding/win32.txt and it didn't really help. Brian gave me detailed instructions via email, I have modified them slightly with a few extra steps that I found were needed. These new instructions don't describe building by cygwin, but cygwin is pretty awful so I'd say thats a good thing. They do include MSYS instruction which is far better, and results in a perfectly working binary. They also describe building using Visual Studio, not from the command line but from the project files.
