Duncan, Mark, Simon Here's another cry of pain: http://fluffynukeit.com/2013/02/reflections-after-a-hard-day-in-haskell-gui… "Cabal is a frustratingly constraining tool. Far too frequently I encountered packages that, when trying to install, would say installing this package will break a dozen others. If not that, then I often would be notified that the dependencies could not be resolved. " What is frustrating that we KNOW how to fix this, don't we? (Allow multiple installations of package P-3.2.5, each depending on different versions of its dependencies.) We just need to liberate enough effort to do it. Indeed, more people seem to be joining in with GHC/Cabal these days. How hard would it be to write a detailed description of the implementation changes needed to support side-by-side installations, and project-manage a group to do it? Simon

TH in Cross-GHC

Hi Stephen, on the wiki page you mention that you work on TH for cross-GHC. What is the status / attack plan on that? Here is something I was thinking all the time: What about enabling TH in the STAGE1 GHC (i.e. the final cross-GHC) iff the bootstrap compiler has exactly the same version as the one to be built? I understood that TH cannot be part of STAGE1 because of version mismatch issues in TH-internal data structures. Since TH is bytecode based, the target architecture should not be a concern. This could be a stopgap measure until we figure out the details how to switch over the build system so that STAGE2 is the cross-compiler (with TH), and optionally STAGE3 a native target compiler. Is there a reason why such a trick would not work in short term? I'd like to know. Cheers, Gabor

Is this new? Does it matter? Can I ignore it? Does everyone now need to install a new tool? I'm not sure how to "install libtool on my linux". (I thought we'd been using libtool, whatever it is, for years, so I'm puzzled why this has just started to happen.) I can't clone

sync-all remote set-url broken

After an unreasonable amount of thrashing around, I finally discovered what was causing my pain: the set-url bit of sync-all doesn't work. Look at this. See the red below. The sub-modules don't have a ".git" suffix. The other packages do. Geoff thinks that the sync-all script has code for deciding whether to add the ".git" or not, but the code was omitted when adding the sub-module stuff. Result: in subsequent stuff, git looks in a darcs repo, with consequent terribly confusing results. Ian could you fix please? Hi Simon, How should an instance of Typeable for a polykinded tycon look like? E.g. if we have data Proxy (a :: k) = Proxy -- Proxy :: forall (k :: BOX). k -> * I suppose we want an instance forall k. instance Typeable (k -> *) (Proxy k) Right? So the universally quantified kind variables of the tycon should end up universally quantified in the instance as well. How does this translate to the ds_tvs, ds_tys, and ds_tc_args arguments of a DerivSpec?... RFC: omit write barrier instructions unless '-threaded'

Hi all, from what I gathered so far no emission of write barriers is needed when - running on a uniprocessor (-threaded or not) - running on a multiprocessor sans having linked with -threaded. Below patch suppresses the emission of 'lwsync' when no '-threaded' is specified on PPC only. So it does not cover both criteria above. It helps me a lot since I have a uniprocessor target that does not understand the 'lwsync' instruction (instruction is newer than core). Still, I have some doubts: o do we want to extend this approach to other archs? o possibly suppress the emission of MO_WriteBarrier in compiler/codeGen/StgCmmBind.hs (more care is needed to also cover compiler/cmm/CmmParse.y). Anyway this should be a safe first step, and I'd like to push it. When we find a general solution be can back this commit out. What do you think? Confusing commit messages about `type-nats`?

Hello, I am receiving a bunch of commit messages for branch `type-nats`, that seem to be fake (i.e., by folks committing to other branches). Does any one know why that is? It seems to have started after my merge commit from yesterday, so did I mess something up? -Iavor

Build errors on HEAD
