Dreaded "... has stopped working" with LLVM back end on Win64

I'm using the 7.6.2 Win64 port to try to compile HEAD with the quick-llvm BuildFlavour (I'm using LLVM 3.1). This entails setting -optlc-mtriple=x86_64-w64-mingw32 since the LLVM back-end doesn't output the right triple when producing .ll files. Unfortunately I get the dreaded "ghc-cabal.exe has stopped working" pop-up dialog as soon as ghc-cabal.exe is invoked. Interestingly, ghc-cabal.exe behaves as expected when invoked with no command line arguments. I have no idea where to start with this one. Any hints? Has anyone ever used the LLVM back end on Win64 (I'm guessing not). Thanks, Geoff

ticky/cc profiling and heap checks

I noticed some suspicious wiggling in my ticky reports' entry counts. SPJ suggested they were due to the counter ticking before the heap check: if it fails, then it ticks again when we re-enter after the stg_gc function does its thing. After looking into it a bit further, I have a couple questions. Here's what I found. * for functions (StgCmmBind.closureCodeBody), tickyEnterFun and enterCostCentreFun are before the heap check * for thunks (StgCmmBind.thunkCode), tickyEnterThunk is before the heap check and enterCostCentreThunk is after. Questions: * Does any object to me moving both ticky counters after the heap check? * Is there a reason the two cost centre profiling entries are on opposite sides of the heap check? Thanks.

I'm way below my depth here, but I'd like to use the perf tool to see where a program is spending its time. Unfortunately, the recipe here http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/Debugging/LowLevelProfiling/Perf isn't working for me. unprotected use of global variables in base:GHC.IO.Encoding

I've noticed some suspicious code in base:GHC.IO.Encoding. setLocaleEncoding, setFileSystemEncoding, setForeignEncoding :: TextEncoding -> IO () (getLocaleEncoding, setLocaleEncoding) = mkGlobal initLocaleEncoding (getFileSystemEncoding, setFileSystemEncoding) = mkGlobal initFileSystemEncoding (getForeignEncoding, setForeignEncoding) = mkGlobal initForeignEncoding mkGlobal :: a -> (IO a, a -> IO ()) mkGlobal x = unsafePerformIO $ do x_ref <- newIORef x return (readIORef x_ref, writeIORef x_ref) I've not elided any pragmas and there's no relevant LANGUAGE or OPTIONS pragmas. With HEAD from a couple weeks ago, mkGlobal is not getting inlined. But with some of my experimental alterations of sizeExpr, it is getting inlined. So this code should probably have some of the guards for faking global variables, right?

Current testsuite failures

Hi all, (resending without attachment because the previous email got rejected) Last night I've built GHC HEAD with the default settings, and ran the testsuite with just `make`. It ran into 77 unexpected failures; the failure log is available at http://hpaste.org/82291. The summary is at the end of this email. I've fixed the Data.Typeable.Proxy ones in the meantime. [PATCH] fixes for android in libraries/unix

Hey, These patches are for libraries/unix. They may need some discussing, because I am not sure if this is the right thing. 1. On android the passwd struct does not define pw_gecos. The first patch therefor sets it to the empty string. 2. The android ndk does not define _POSIX_VDISABLE, but it defines _PC_VDISABLE. The second patch defines _POSIX_VDISABLE to _PC_VIDISABLE, which is (as I undestand it) what the POSIX programmer guide suggests. 3. The android ndk does not define telldir and seekdir. The third patch removes them when compiling for android.

validate failure due to haddock

Hi, I just ran ./sync-all pull and ran validate on Linux.
